View Full Version : A 242ti from one Nick to another...

So I purchased this neat little 242 from Nick (righttirefire) a few days ago. He gave me first dibs and a good deal on the price since hes moving somewhere that the car cant go. Its an 81' 242GLT Turbo that was originally a west coast car. Nick bought it in Vegas and rolled gangsta style in it. It got some flat black paint and a flame job on the front end. When the B21 let go, he stuck in a fresh b230ft and I came over to wire it. Got her running decent on LH 2.2 and EZK which brings us up to now. Here's the car when I brought it home:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_1/DSC01034.JPG

The b230 is tight and runs pretty decent. I hotwired the overdrive so doing 75 mph would be tolerable on the interstate. So then I got it home and began to make a gameplan. I've been tossing the idea of a v8 conversion around, but I just cant bring myself to do it.

I'll make another post for todays progress later.

I'm gonna ask for you guys to refrain from useless clutter (TANK!) in this thread, please.

Today, I tore into it. Removed the wiring harness, the other misc accessories, turbo, and degreased the engine bay. I'm going to throw a fresh wiring harness in along w/ new front seals, crank pulley, timing belt, and some other goodies. Heres what things are starting to look like:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01043.jpg
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01044.jpg

This is where I'm going to have to perform some surgery to fix the hole in the firewall. I'm going to pull out the heater/evaporator/blower thingy so I can have good access to do some bodywork here. The goal is to put in a panel from behind which will seal it up, then put something over the front to keep it looking clean. I'm thinking an aluminum plate or something. We'll see how creative I get in the next few days. The catch to this whole thing is that the head has to come off for access to it. :grrr:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01046.jpg

Old wiring and plumbing goes in the trunk for storage.

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01048.jpg

And heres what I'm going to be running on this sucka.

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01049.jpg
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01050.jpg
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_2/Dsc01051.jpg

For now, I'm going to build a LH 2.2 240 + EZK harness which I'll use temporarily. It'll also serve as a good example and photo source for my article on EZK117 > 240 swap. Eventually, when I do the trans swap, I'm gonna put in a proper flywheel and crank sensor so I can run LH 2.4. Please don't turn this thread into a bitchfest about how I should be using MS. If others can make ~250 hp on LH 2.4, so can I goddammit.

Going to the junkyard tomorrow for parts.

Thanks!

I went to the JY this morning and got a harness, new center console, nifty little airbox from a 240D, and a couple other bits. I came back and pulled the front end of the motor off... pulleys, timing belt, cover, etc. Shot it with degreaser repeatedly and scrubbed. That stuff is really on there! I'm going to get the heavy duty stuff tonight at work and go at it again tomorrow. At that point, I was 10 minutes from having the head off so I grabbed the breaker bar and off she came. I think the motor had 220k after coming out of its original 740t wagon. It has significantly more cylinder wear than my 240 did and its estimated to have way less miles! Looks like somoene wasnt keeping up with oil changes. Theres a bit of a ridge at the top of the cylinders, but I'm just saying screw it and will run it for now. I'm putting in an order to FCP for gaskets and whatnot here in a few minutes. Tomorrow, I'll degrease some more and then start removing the front of the interior so I can work on that firewall. More pics to come.

So heres the pics of where I'm at now. I've straightened things out as much as possible. I'm going to cut a section out and weld in a plate. I also removed the evap core and cleaned out all the vents and whatnot.

Overall, not too bad for a couple hours work. I don't claim to be any kind of professional at bodywork, but as long as I don't have a hole in my firewall I'll be happy. I'll finish it up tomorrow most likely and start grinding and applying some filler. Yesterday I went out and assembled a new wiring harness for the fuel computer. I'll be integrating the EZK side into it pretty soon. Right now, I'm going to go pull the wiper motor, clutch cable, fuel filter, brake booster, and whatever else needs to come out in order for me to throw some paint on the engine bay. I wouldn't mind seeing paint on there thurs night. I should be receiving my FCP box in a couple days. I'll finish cleaning things and start reassembling this weekend into next week. I'm going to grab some flat black today at work and touch up some of the spots on the body that look bad. Brandon (bluesteel) is replacing the bad valve stem in the one wheel. He also grabbed me some nice door handles the other day at the JY. I'm going to go back at some point and grab some bumpers.

Done with that nightmare finally. I started painting the engine bay today w/ the rustoleum but it looked like it might rain so i pussed out. Of course by the time I pack everything up and come inside, its beautiful out again. Stupid FL. Oh well, I'm taking the 244 to the strip tonight. Needs to go < 14.9 :)

All kidding aside, I mean the front crank, intermediate shaft, and camshaft seals. This motor had a cam seal leak that someone decided to neglect for a few thousand miles so the entire front of the motor is nastay. The others I like to replace when its all taken apart because its easy.

Nick doesn't **** around, that's a fact.

God damn right.

Although it must be said that I dont have a clue what the hell I'm doing when it comes to bodywork. It was decided in an OT thread that a new plate should be welded in. I can handle that much. Just needed some bondo and sanding after that. Heh.

Dunnoes. I've got a lot to do in a month and half. The other problem is that I'm at a couple stopping points with the parts that I have. I need some sort of exhaust for the 244 so I can steal the 3" for this car. I've got a new m47 clutch coming so I can put the m46 in the 244. After that I'll still need a clutch for this car which I dunno if I'll be able to afford soon. Plus, I'm going to need a wideband for the MS. Ugh.

Well, thats the thing. New internals and the machine work is way out of my budget right now. I'm not looking for super high HP numbers; probably ~250whp, so I think for now the bottom end is going to stay as-is. Not looking for a drag only car, I want something thats good all around. As for a head, I have this EricF 405 that needs some attention. Ive also got a known good 530 off the old motor and the questionable one that came on this motor. Isaac is pushing me to make use of the 405 but its the one Eric had really sheety luck w/ on his GT. I'll probably make a decision in the next couple days on the final setup.

I've been thinking about taking this opportunity to do something smarter with the engine mounts so the motor doesn't flop around like crazy. Might go grab those 940 mounts and get creative, we'll see.

I still have to do my reading on the whole MS thing. I'm debating building the relay board but I don't think its worth it. I'm going to clean and reassemble the dash soon so I'll get into the wiring at some point.

My big priority is getting my roommates 855 done with its tranny swap. At that point, I'll have a lot more garage space to work with and progress will be facilitated.

242Bleek
06-18-2007, 12:22 AM
Sounds like you got a good plan, I would rather try and port the 530 myself. The BCP 405 will give you nothing but but blown HG's, I've been down that road. The relay board is always good to have if it means not frying your MS. I love mine

Some of the metal up there is bent from a previous wreck or some TB-style bumper tucking... not sure which. The IC is mounted evenly, but the smashed bumper and tweaked front clip make it look a little weird.

Tomorrow, I'm going to clean everything out of the trunk and figure out battery mounting. Its so nice having garage space now!

Yessir. You have to shorten the passenger side axle by about 1/4", but otherwise, everything bolts up.

Stupid ebay moron cant pack a box to save his life. This actually doesn't sit that low. W/ that 940 bumper cover on, the airdam actually sits lower. Plenty of clearance.

The tone ring is different. The 240 speedo needs exactly 1/4 of the pulses that the 700/900 cluster does. The aforementioned articles instruct to cut and weld tone rings from the old diff to the new. I just cut through the unneeded parts, and ripped them out w/ pliers.

Similar to what Mike did: http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71778500

You can see where they used to go across.

Nice! How do you fit you WG actuator on there with the compressor clocked like that? I tried that with my old T04B and the actuator got in the way.

I'm hacking up a bracket as I type. I'm using the Saab actuator that has the balljoint thing built into it. I'll post some pics when its done. It appears that it'll work nicely, but I'm going to use shop air and test it before I install.

Haha, thanks. I love that 240D airbox. Never been a fan of cone filters hanging out in the breeze. The K&N 33-2003 filter should fit in there nicely.

Finished making the plug wires this morning. I tapped the two holes on the valve cover for where the k-jet IAC thing mounts and used them as a place to bolt a bracket. Welded that to the coil pack bracket. Works nice, theres plenty of clearance for the strut brace I'm using, and I like how short my plug wires are.

Yesterday, at work, I picked up the dogbone upper torque mount for a Cadillac. I sanded some paint away on the strut tower this morning and got started making the mount for it. I'm going to make a matching mount on the head where the CBV bracket usually goes. I think this should keep the motor from attempting its usual walk around the 240 engine bay.

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_12/DSC01196.JPG

Tested it with shop air and it moves smooth as can be.

Today I finished that, and bolted the turbo on. Hooked up the feed and return and decided it was time to prime the oil pump. Upon doing so, the car poured oil on the ground like Isaac's car. I found out it was coming from the oil cooler. A quick trip to the JY took care of that. Tomorrow, I'm going to start doing the megasquirt wiring. Fueling the motor is my last big step to getting it running. IC pipes need to be done at some point too, but I'm not too worried about that.

Heh, theres Jesse, but I don't know if hes self inducted himself into the VFBG.

I bought 8 (:oogle:) injector bungs from ebay. Gonna drill the manifold and weld em in. I'll grind off the excess material afterwards. I've also got plans for a bigger throttle body.

So it doesn't actually fit. I bought this off of Jesse (jao) for an awesome price. His pbase (http://www.pbase.com/jaodesign/header2&page=all). It actually fits quite well considering the variables I hadn't taken into consideration. The T04e is a lot bigger than what he was running. Surprisingly though, the wastegate on the cosworth housing still has plenty of clearance. I just need to build a new bracket for the actuator (no biggie). As you can see from those last pics, theres not really clearance to mount the turbo directly onto the T3 flange as Jesse had it. My plan is to reweld the flange on so it aims the compressor slightly more towards the passenger headlight. Basically make that mounting hole, as pictured above, work. I'm going to need a new fitting for the oil feed (90* AN instead of the straight) and I'm going to have to come up with a new solution for the oil drain. Trivial things really, for the gains I should see. The other thing I'm going to have to spend some money on is heatshielding... for everything.

Mike, I just bought the 9" svo deal from clutchnet and took it and the flywheel to my local clutch shop. I told him I wanted something high clamp that would work w/ it as a flat flywheel. He ordered something directly from exeedy (I think I have the part # somewhere, I'll try and find for you) but I would assume most flat flywheel 9" pressureplates would work as long as the spring height was correct. I ended up having to move the fork ball out a couple mm to get complete throwout. We'll see how it holds once the car runs.

So it runs pretty decent for me not having a clue how to tune MS. The IAC valve I cant seem to make work, but its not that important right now. I'm going to see about registering the car and getting insurance on it pretty soon. I've still got a handful of little jobs to finish up before then anyway. Primarily, I need to make an exhaust for this thing because the open downpipe is LOUD. I can't freaking wait to drive it.

Idles properly now and doesn't foul plugs on cold starts. The JAW wideband is working nicely and I've got the accel enrichments a little more in the ballpark. I've made a couple of open downpipe, illegal, renegade drives around the neighborhood and its such a cool feeling. The holset sounds amazing with the open downpipe. I found out why the E-fan isnt working (wired into the wrong spot, doh!) and fixed a couple vacuum leaks. I'm going to have to spend my next day off finishing up the wiring for the gauges, speedo, foglights, tach signal, and extra functions (clutch switch, table switch, etc).

One thing I'm having a hard time with is the MS having a really bouncy coolant temp reading. I might go back and make sure thats grounded properly.

The knockoff SSQV sounds pretty amazing now that I've got the engine revving somewhat.

Oh, and to all the nay-sayers about MS and idle quality, I'm running the IPD cam in that motor w/ the IAC still not hooked up. Not bad, if you ask me.

BTW, that clutch is hilarious. I embarrassed myself in front of my neighbors pulling that car up the driveway as I stalled it 3 times. Oh well, hopefully it holds nice at lots of boost.

I've had a whole bunch of other stuff going on in my life lately. I just moved to a new house, purchased a new DD, facing some work issues, getting ready for school, etc. etc. I'm also working out a couple titling issues with it so I can get it legal. I have driven it around quite a bit and its such a blast. I'm stockpiling some flat black paint right now and it'll be getting the uniform color treatment before too long.

I have had the ambition to get it done, especially since my roommate got his project car going.

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/7020/1000556sq8.jpg
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/3294/1000584my9.jpg
(you can see some of my TB-style input in that last pic if you look closely)

Hopefully, we'll get to take our flat black monsters to the track for some shake'n'bake action.

I ordered the rest of the stuff I need to hook up my gauges and ms-extra functions and in the next couple days I'll get a 3" straight thru and some mandrel U bends from work to make an exhaust for it.

When I drove it from my old house to this one (illegally, I might add...) I had the boost set at stock. Even at 7 psi the thing was damn quick. I fiddled with the timing a little at stoplights and got it a lot more drivable. The clutch on this thing is retarded-awesome. I still stall it moving the car around the driveway

Up until now, the exhaust for this car has consisted of this, and this alone:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00008.JPG

Needless to say, it was a bit obnoxious. Heres a pic of my solution to HX35 boost control issues:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00009.JPG

So, I spent a little money at work and rounded up all my residual 3" plumbing from past products and came up with this:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00010.JPG

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00011.JPG

I used this muffler on my last car, and that system now resides with isaac. I love it because it sounds fantastic, plus:

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00012.JPG

Did a little chopping on that original downpipe:
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00014.JPG

I then welded the flex section on and one of the extension pieces I had. At this point, I realized I would need another couple of feet of 3" before I attatch the resonator. I figured I'd start working from the back then I realized that I'm missing some hangers. I'll pick the rest of the stuff up at work today and finish this project up tomorrow, hopefully.

My last car looked like this:

http://nickflyman.com/volvo/volvo1sm.JPG

Those that heard the exhaust knew how awesome it was, and I'm basically duplicating it on this car. But anyway, I'll post more pics and a vid once I get more stuff done.

I finished that pipe up pretty quick today once I got the hangers. It tucks pretty tight up against the body but still has enough clearance where it shouldn't hit the body and vibrate.
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00019.JPG

This time I used two hangers for that center muffler section and I'm glad I did. It doesn't move around at all.

Installed, it looks like this:
http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00018.JPG

Next, I had to make the around-the-axle section. This was my least favorite part the last time. Fortunately, I learned from that experience, and it went much quicker this time.

http://nickflyman.com/242/242_16/DSC00020.JPG

I must say, I love that its quiet. I've done the loud car thing in the past, and I'm so done with it.

I love my car.

I took the laptop to work today and did a little datalogging. It seemed like I was going lean around 5800 or so (soft cut at 6800, hard at 7k). By then the boost creeps to 9ish. I added some fuel up top and on the scenic route home, things seemed a little better. The air temps also dropped to around 68* so that helped too. What a fun car. I met up with Isaac and gave him a little ride.

Only negative today was my confirmed suspicion that the heater core is shot. So after about an hour of driving the coolant tank is almost empty. Also, these tires are shot. I can spin through second like butter.

New windshield installed today. Safelite ftw. ~180$ installed w/ upgraded trim. Found a couple rust holes in the lower section of the window channel that the installers gooped up with silicone. They said that they almost never have to redo it, but if it leaks within 30 days, they'll come back out. I'm not worried.

Cleaned all the crap out of the trunk vacuumed the interior. Installed some of the interior trim that was missing. I also richened the AFRs up a hair more above 5500 in the 130-140 kpa range and things seem to be much nicer. Going to the track Wednesday to see what 9 psi does in the 1/4 mile.

So I brought the car into the garage last night to address some issues and get things better sorted. I'm getting some oil smoke on decel and idle after romping. I'm improving my pcv setup to what I had in my old car that worked so well. I wired up a solenoid to use for MS boost control. I'm installing the wiring to the launch control switch. I remounted my AFR gauge on the A pillar so it wont fall off anymore. I wired my tach signal in properly so hopefully it will work consistently, rather than whenever it feels like it.

Also, I found out the reason that my car was slow as **** at the track. The day before we went, I was trying to tweak my idle settings some. Before you know it, it was way out of whack, so I reverted back to a 3 week old msq file (known decent idle settings). Well, in the process, I managed to lose all my recent spark tweaks, like the extra advance I added in the upper map/rpm levels. The extra 8 psi I was running did nothing to help my times.

Oh well, I plan on heading back out in a couple weeks with my roommate using Jeremy's slicks, more boost, better tune, and launch control. 12's maybe?

I'm also working on coming up w/ a solution that removes the airbox for track days. I like having an airbox w/ a paper filter as far as engine longevity is concerned, but it might be impacting spool time. We'll see.

I also found out this morning that my rear trailing arm bushings are ****ed, so I'll have to get that taken care of as well.

So I'm done with redblocks. I picked up the T6 motor out of a JY near the airport for near nothing with the intent of putting it in the 960. Once I realized it would be way more badass to be in the 240, I changed my plans. I've always wanted a straight six turbo powered car and I figure it may as well be the 242.

I've been selling off the 240's valuable parts, getting credit cards payed off, and putting together the stuff I need to get this new beast swapped in. So far, I've got the proper oilpan on, got the set of 960 coils, mounts, and a couple other doo-dads in my posession so I can start trying to get things moving.

The b230 is almost ready to come out:
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/nickflyman/Dsc00169.jpg
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/nickflyman/Dsc00170.jpg

I tried getting 960 brackets and using the 960 alternator and PS pump. Alas, the 00' t6 block does not allow for the proper mounting of said accessories. Instead, I'm going to run the T6 alternator and PS pump on the factory bracket. The only issue here is that I'm not having an a/c compressor in the mix. Which means I have to go from this belt routing method:

http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/nickflyman/Dsc00145.jpg

Belt wrap around the alternator and the alternator spinning backwards might be an issue. I have a super secret plan that will fix the belt wrap issue. I tested various alternators backwards at work and did some research... running it backwards is not supposed to cause problems.

After cleaning the block and installing the oilpan, water tube, and oil feed:

Things are coming together slowly. The major to-do list isnt that bad:

Adapt a throttle body to the T6 manifold.
Figure out some sort of exhaust manifold solution.
Wire in the second injector bank to MS and add another spark output.
Get a stupid big turbo.
Finish the trans adapter.
Make engine mounts.

Big thanks to Karl Buchka for his patience answering my questions and his fantastic write-up. Also, to my roommate for his continued help throughout the project.

Today I wired up the 960 coils to their respective modules and mounted them on Saab 139 heat sync/backing plates. They'll sit up on the firewall just above the motor. Then, when I got home tonight, my engine hoist magically reappeared (courtesy of the anti-Isaac) and I decided to do something...

running the alternator backwards is not a problem with the newer ones~(like you already said). the older ones (think the normal 240 style) have a fan that only works properly in one direction, these work in both directions. from the Bosch yellow book on alternators.

In Europe there are many whiteblocks (in 850s) without A/C. There is a belt for that application. no need to change tensioner or other things. Might be usable.

Very cool project!

So today my roommate and I hit up the JY looking for a few things. One of the more important issues currently is the throttle body situation. The T6 had an electronic throttle body. I've been keeping an eye out for a suitable replacement. I knew that the mid 90's Ford 4.6 throttle body had the correct size bore and bolt holes that only needed minor redrilling to make work. I had one in my posession on the way out of the JY when I just happened to pop the hood on a mid 90's Aurora. I compared my TB gasket that I had been carrying around to find out that it should be work-able. The bore would be slightly bigger (better!) and the bolt holes should be workable. I make shifted some torx tools and got it off. Here it is with a b230 TB on the left and a 960 TB on the right.

For anyone not aware, the Aurora has a 4.0 DOHC v8 that's the little brother of the Northstar. Behind the TB was a spacer that's used for an EGR input. I grabbed it as well, figuring I might use it for an IAC input. Its debatable now, due to there not being enough space. Once I get the proper 90* silicon coupler, we'll see.

You can see that I get to port the opening out a little on the T6 manifold. Mounted on the motor, it looks like this:

Surprisingly the 240 throttle cable end snaps right into the arm. The only thing I need to do is make an extension to hold it.
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/nickflyman/Dsc00181.jpg

I also bought some mounts from work for 8$/piece that should do the job. These are the ones everyone has been mentioning lately w/ the interlocking tabs that help prevent them from being torn apart.

That throttle body fits really nicely! My silly Nissan throttlebody is too big and screws up intercooler piping bigtime, that is a way nicer solution

You failboated on the 960 accessories though- it can be done with some fiddling.

I have a 960 PS pump on my T6- I wanted the integral reservoir, way cleaner IMO.

I guarantee belt wrap will be an issue not using an idler where the AC compressor is. Those big mother alternators require some torque. Volvo went way out of their way to get a LOAD of belt wrap on the alternator, and they didn't just do it for fun.

VADIS lists the part numbers for the bracket and idler pullety as available on non-ac S80's.

I just ordered that stuff- around $100. Problem solved.

What's the plan for the trans?

Lookin good overall!

The 960 accessories didn't look like a possibility at all to me. I found one spot where the bracket would mount with like two bolts, but then the accessories were misaligned with the crank pulley. Obviously, going to a 960 crank pulley would be the option, but it all seemed like extra work.

If you have the part #'s for the non-A/C stuff, that'd be cool. I was planning on making a bracket for a bigass pulley to be down there, but it would be nice to go w/ an OE solution that way I don't have to try and find a custom sized double sided belt.

The current plan is to run twin 15Gs on manifolds I have yet to make. It should be pretty neat by the time its all done.

Karl sold me his old flywheel/clutch/bellhousing setup. I'll be using the T5 I already have most likely.

Alrighty, a recent epiphany in my automotive mindset has made me realize the real direction I want to take with the car. I've decided that I dont really need more than 300 hp to have fun with this car. Most of my favorite vehicles to drive have been light, non-turbo, rwd, and well-handling. I realized that if a twin turbo T6 setup were to come to fruition that I'd be spending a lot of money on an engine, and have a crap car otherwise. Seeing as how I want to use this car for more than drag strip days, plus I like the idea of not blowing up motor after motor because of poor tuning, I'm going to go with a *gasp* non-turbo setup.

The new plan for me is to find a B6304. This b6304 will then have the T6 valve train put into the head along with the early cams. A better intake mani (ITBs eventually... maybe) and freeflowing exhaust will be an obvious upgrade. The nice part about this is that I'll keep the MS&S and the tuning should be dead simple. No melted pistons, no variable cam controlling, no nonsense. This should hopefully prove to be a reliable and fun setup that will give me good power and a long service life. Couple this with a nice ratio T5 and 4.10 (or larger, I have plans...) differential, the car should be decently quick.

With less money being spent on the engine, I'll be able to focus more on making the car turn and stop better. I've got a brake upgrade in the works right now. Details will follow, but for now, you just need to know that I need spacers and bigger rims. :-D I'm planning some super secret front suspension stuff that will come to surface when it gets done. Same with the rear suspension...

The car will be on jack stands for some time I'm afraid. Overall, I feel this direction will give me much more achievable goals and will make me happier overall with the results. I'll post pics as my ideas become reality.

Did the mounting in-car of the Momo seat empower your conviction? :)

You already know I wholeheartedly agree with this... Don't forget to bring your RPMs to the gunfight. 7500 should be the minimum ;)

Cool.

If you're going to do a valvetrain swap, it might be worth considering finding a 2002+ head especially for a NA build.

More flow from valves with thinner valve stems that are also lighter thanks to that, solid lifters, etc.

Only downside is there's no real hot cam option, but for and NA motor with good power to 7500 early 960 cams aren't going to cut it anyways so that's probably not a huge deal...

Nick

As I understood it, they had variable cam stuff on both cams. I'd really rather not mess with that stuff... Plus, like you said, the cams suck. Is there a hotter cam source on the other side of the pond?

Catcams does il5 whiteblock cams... Why not take the stocks cams to a machine shop and have them turn it in something nice. maybe find some interesting BMW il6 cam specs that might be usefull. Maybe the E34 il6 M5 engine has some nice cams? (so you can use the specs)

The VVT is easy to defeat- not sure you've followed my current thread but I kicked mine to the curb this week. Just had a solid hub machined for the exhaust side (this was for the 960 cam swap, but I could have done the same basic thing to the existing VVT cam).

To lock up a VVT cam it'd be even easier becuase it just needs one hole in the middle.

I'm going to cut open the VVT hub now since I don't need it any more - I think you can likely just weld 'em solid inside.

My motor just times with the timing mark like a normal motor now.

I know if potentially adds complication, but I'm just saying a lighter, higher flowing OEM valvetrain exists and you'll probably need custom cams either way. For the sake of locking up a couple cams gears I'd be tempted since that stuff is even mor eimportant on an NA build...

Nick
07-24-2009, 12:22 PM
Hmm... That is interesting. I thought the valvetrain in the 00' motor was also the higher revving stuff. Looking at poi's thread, it seems to be an upgrade. 02'+ stuff is even better?

I'm really wanting to go for simplicity here. I like the idea of easily replaceable parts. I saw what was going on in your thread, but I dont really feel like going through all that crap just to get rid of a system that prohibits the hotter cams anyway. Making hubs for cams just doesn't really excite me. I plan on porting the head quite a bit, and I've made some discoveries about intake manifolds that will hopefully help to make this project even easier.
