HI everyone, I have 88 745 turbo.

One of my friend is selling everything below, only for $100.
1 X Sony CDXF5505 High Power XM Ready CD/MP3 Player
2 X Audiovox 6" speakers
2 X Audiovox 6x9 speakers
2 X Sony XPLODE series 6x9 speakers

so.. I am wondering how hard it would be to fit these speakers. These speakers all have tweeters on itself(do you call this 2-way / 3-way speakers?)

thx in advance...

As for the 6" speaker I imagine they are actually 6.5" (pretty sure that's the standard). If they're anything like the ones I have (pioneer prs series - the yellow ones) the magnets were a bit too big and I had to trim a bit of metal around the circomference of the speaker hole. Probably an hour's work to put in the fronts.
As for the 6X9's, if you already have them stock, then the swap is stupid simple. If not, look up from in the trunk, there a dotted line where you cut to make the holes for them in the rear deck. That took about half an hour as I recall.
p.s.- I've never been too impressed with sony car audio, just my 2 cents.
Good luck!

I don't see that working very well since he has a 745...

Frankly I'm not too sure how you should go about this. I don't know what kind of rear speakers a 745 has, so as far as putting the 6x9s back there, I suppose it'll depend on how creative you feel like getting. As for the front speakers, if you actually do have 6" speakers, they should basically drop right in. If instead they're 6-1/2s, you get to be creative again. They'll fit with some cutting, either of the speaker frame or the factory grills, if you want to keep those.

Coaxial / Triaxial, depending on the amount of tweeters.

My 745 has speakers in the rear doors, and it would be super tough to get 6x9s in there. Prolly gonna have to go in boxes. It would be a bad idea to put them into the hatch - that hatch panel barely stays in place on it's own with a tight tailgate. A pair of speakers would eventually rip that panel to shreds.

How hard would it be to fit these speakers?

You could damn near cut your finger off!

I bought 6" speakers NOT 6.25" speakers and there is NO way they would fit the door panels without cutting a lot of the cardboard and foam out. A helpful turbobricker claims the 6" will fit with minimum effort. Bull$#%&

My doors had already had the metal cut back for bigger speaker magnets, so I mounted the 6" speakers to the door, then hacked the door panels so they wouldn't interfere (using pliers, no more sharp implements for me :grrr:). Later door panels (with the longer black speaker grills) don't have as much cardboard and foam to interfere.

So you may be able to hack the doors / door panels to get the 6.25" speakers to fit, but the 6x9s will have to go in a box of some sort.

I put 5 1/4s all around with a little ring of metal in the front to make up for the extra space. I wouldn't recommend any of it though since it's Sony and I've never dealt with Audiovox.

Thank you so much guys, for helping me out on a seemingly redundant topic, with more information..

I think I am gonna buy just the deck + 6" speakers for 6-80 bucks, replacing the stock deck and front door speakers. I guess it would be bit of hassle to splice & extend the speaker wires and all.

By the way, I pulled out the stock radio to see how the wring harness looked like- and it was REALLY surprising how easy the stock deck came out. it only took me 1 min to pull it out. (maybe less than that for second try)

I'll post a step-by-step thread for installing speakers & decks when I get the stuff.

Thanks!

Depends on the car... My 90 745 has 6 1/2" front speakers and 5 1/4" out back while my 88 745 has 5 1/4" in all 4 doors.

Audiovox is not a great name in speakers and you couldn't pay me to put Sony gear in my car... but I've had bad experiences with sony. But for the price it's a decent deal.

Chris - sorry to hear you nearly cut your digit off.

Should I leave the stock speakers in and ditch the deal I am looking at and buy a Alpine CDA-9855 deck for $180?

I would for now, unless they are broken. Maybe look at a cheaper Alpine or Pioneer deck. Those are both great brands, IMO. Look at all of the extras you are paying for, and decide if you are actually going to use them. If not, look at the next cheapest deck.

Yeah, I'm a big Pioneer fan - haven't cared for low-end Alpine stuff in a long time and can't afford/won't spend the $ to buy the high-end alpine stuff. My Pioneers have always served me well.
In fact I still have one of the original detachable-face CD players from them and it works like a champ. Circa 1990?

Thanks man. Surgery today. :omg:

... and to the original poster, I think 5.25 speakers are the way to go if you don't want the extra work.

whatever speakers you get, amp them please?

i used to run deck power till i learned the way.

now i have 4 kappa 2ways, two 5.25's in the doors and 6x9's in the rear deck and a JL 6 channel amp. the leftover 2 channels are for the subs i havent purchased yet.

the difference is phenomenal. just the 6x9's on an amp creates a sh1t-ton of bass, more then i expected. and, yeah, its nice to be able to turn your stereo up all the way without distortion, in the speakers, kinda makes you def though... :)

I really can't wait to get an amp, I just want to see what kind of difference it makes. I've got some pretty nice speakers in the front, so maybe with them amped I will have a nice mix of subwoofers and speakers.

The JBL Power 632 (6 1/2") I just installed in the driver's door sounds pretty decent on the stock deck and amp. Can't wait to get my Kicker 6 channel on there (as well as install the other 3 speakers and sub)!

Really? I might do the speakers first, then do the deck. I am picking up the deck from my friend on tomorrow! Quite excited for the stereo installation :P

and.. as for chree, I am sorry that happened! However- thanks for posting the picture...

Today, I was holding a brick and for some sh**ty odd reason, the brick splits in half ( I mean REAL BRICK ) and half of it landed on my other hand.

I bled for quite a long time, and the light-grey colored driveway that I just pressurewashed yesterday is..NOW ALL BLOODDDYYY RED.

:(

well, I am just hoping for everything to go smooth for the stereos ;-)

Well yeah, IF your car has 5 1/4s to begin with. The 90+ (maybe 89 too?) has a 6.5" up front.

BTW and off-topic, to avoid the aftermarket pop-out look (that I KNOW chree hates) I have sacrificed the stock radio, gutted and trimmed the inset faceplate and will be flush-mounting my Pioneer from behind. :oogle:

Pics will be coming when I finally get around to starting my own audio thread and stop cluttering the threads of others.

why all the hate against sony's auto line??
no, really......
i like them better than pioneer. and alpine, bose, and jbl charge you for brand name recognition.

I don't hate the audio line in particular... the Mobile ES stuff was a thing of beauty! And I don't really hate Sony all that much - it just seems that every Sony piece I've ever bought imploded on me at some point. And when I worked p/t as an installer (car audio) we got a TON of Sony stuff back. Of course that was ~10 years ago. YMMV

5.25s didn't fit in the front on mine directly...they were 6s originally I believe. The backs were 5.25s, however.

alpine CDA-anything is good. i have an old alpine deck and alpine 5.25"s in 4 doors on my 88 745. either my speakers are getting ****ty or my ipod quality sucks, but i'm thinking of replacing with bigger speakers somehow, and running another amp for em. they're just run off the deck right now, which worked fine for a few years, but it feels like time for an upgrade. windows down on the highway with music cranked is not giving me very good sound quality.

I looked into putting 6x9 on the door, but I just gave up.
Instead, I am putting four of them in the wagon storage compartment.

I just finished one, and it already hits from the back. I don't need any subs or anything I guess!

Will post pics of finished thing on later today.
