So I've decided to put some better than stock stereo components into my C70. The stock speakers should be damn good, being premium sound and all, so I'm not bothering with them.

The folks at Volvospeed don't seem to be able to answer my question.

I want to use a double-din unit, because I think it would look better. Does anyone have any suggestions on actually mounting it, without destroying any of the stock mounting brackets? I'd like to not destroy everything in case I decide to sell, or put the stereo in my 780 later.

Tip: It has the same mounting system as seen in 850s and I believe later 960s.
On top of that, I've heard that the standard double din is shorter than the double din units Volvo uses.

I've found a single din that has the same features for a bit less as well, just in case this ends up being nigh-impossible. Thanks in advance guys!

if a single din fits...just get a pocket for it. Metra most likely makes a kit for it...Scosche is another brand that carrys harnesses pockets etc...worst case scenario go to a reputable car aduio storeand ask an installer

I know I can do a single din, with the kit and all, I just like the way double dins looked, compared to the singles. :e-shrug:

Yeah, I'm sure you can do it (well, I'm sure you could make it work). What year do you have? I don't see why it wouldn't be an easy install, seeing as the C70s had 2-din units to begin with.

Looking at pics of other installs, it would appear to me that a 2-din would fit just fine. I also would think that there is an easy way to mount without destroying other hardware. Use plumber's tape or L-brackets with some properly placed holes in them.

Well these are the two units I'm looking at:

The Double Din:

I mainly think that would just look decent enough in my car.

The single:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bnTipUoso8x/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=105KDG830

Pretty much the same thing, but a single din.

I fit 2 singles (with trim rings) in my 855 - looked like it was born there. I imagine the double din will need a custom trim ring.

Well I just ordered everything, and not from Crutchfield.

I got the JVC double din head for 199, so not quite as cheap, but whatever. The company is based out of NYC, so I expect to see it relatively soon!

800 watts of fun for just over 500 bucks!

And the trim ring, I think I'll try to get some wood that matches to stock wood trim in the C70, and then dress it all up. I'd like it to look stock.

I love the idea of just plugging in a ****ing flash drive and cranking tunes out of it too.

Holy jeebus those double-din units are ugly. I want the vacuum tube one though... is that so horribly wrong?

JVC is the way to go though. I can't believe how much cheaper their stuff is than the competition, despite the fact the quality is the same or better **cough**SONY I'm looking at you **coughcough**

The stock head unit can't play MP3s, can't play burned discs(Unless I buy the expensive ones), can't play off of a USB flashdrive, and breaks more than any stock head unit I have ever seen.

It's an in dash 3 disc changer. I've already had one break on me. Then I had the cartridge beak on me. The HU was covered under warrantee, but the cartridge wasn't. That was 50 bucks, and it stopped me from listening to CDs. You have a good idea, but the stock unit blows. :grrr:

I will be using 8 gauge wire ;-) I have a friend who is a crazy car audio nut. He's been dying to do another system, he's been at me for a month now since I decided I would do this.

Right you are. It's a 901, so it's at least faster than the 900, but it still is rubbish.

i was gonna say 901 but thats the code for the UK RDS one so never know with the US versions. you'll have the factory amp too should be 4x100w i think as the 901 only has a 1x25W output for the dash speaker.

tis a kinda good thing as you can sell those 2 items for a decent ammount of money.

Yeah, I have the amp too. I'll probably hang on to them incase I sell the car, so I can put everything back. I just miss how loud, clear and powerful(bass-wise) the stock system was.

I believe the 4X100 went South anyways.

just be careful that you dont have someone hit into that flash drive and crack the port of it off in your shiny new stereo, thats why i keep my port in the glovebox.
