Hello Everyone,

I am visiting from the BMW 2002 world. Does anyone know specs and info on the turbos used by the 740/760 series? There are a few in a local boneyard and I am wondering about using one for the 2 liter M10 engine in the 2002 but don't know the differences in models/turbos used.

Is there one that is better than another? The turbo from the 88 740 has a lot of oil and coolant fittings compared to an earlier 760. It also has Volvo stamped on the compressor and not Garrett. I have heard some 8xx used a Mitsu turbo too? Any and all info would be great and much appreciated!

TIA,
Mike

Here is the link to the board list of turbos used on Volvos. http://www.turbobricks.com/resources.php

In general your choice of turbos are Garrett T3, Mitsubishi tdo5-12b, Mitsubishi td04-13c and sometimes a Garrett T25. Starting in 1987 740 turbos were factory equiped with liquid cooling on the turbo. I'd suggest some version of the Garrett T3 because I like them. They last long, and have good output including top end. The Mitsu tdo5 is one to stay away from. The tdo4 and T25 are great for quick boost response but give up a bit of top end power.

The tdo5 mitsu turbo used on the 700 series turbos around 1988-1989 are a tiny thing that isn't very good for running raised boost or any type of high performance fun. The volvo version is not the same as other mitsu tdo5 turbos from what I've read here. I've got a bad one on an engine and I wouldn't use it for anything.

Mine both work just fine @ 15 PSI; sorry about your bad experience.
BTW, the TD05-12B is larger than the TD04-13C.

+1.

The TD05-12b is roughly equivalent to a T3-.42/.48, but with a better (Cosworth-esque) exhaust housing.

I'd still pick a T3 for 1) lower cost and 2) easy customization (wheel swaps, ATP accessories, etc...).
