Ok, so heres the story. Within a couple days of eachother I found 2 142's for sale in my area.
The first one was a 1974 142E with a B20F and an M41 (4 speed with over-drive). The car its self was in rough shape. (I would post pics from the add but I didn't save them at the time and the add is not gone :-( ). But ya, it was clear in the pics that the car had a bad rust problem in the rockers and rear wheel wells (like ALL volvos). The interior seamed decent and upon talking to the owner the previous owner (who had it since 76) had kept meticulous records of everything that had been done to the car (thoug from the ammount of rust I took this at face value).
The second was a 1973 142 with no engine, no interior, nothing, just a rolling shell. But! And this was the but that cought my attention. It was a former rally car. So I call the guy up to see what the deal was. Turns out he bought the car 7 years ago as a shell from Alberta as a spare for his profesional 142 rally car. After it sitting in the garage for 7 years and never being used he decided he needed the space for another volvo (123GT, and yes, it is a GT, bought like 15-20 years ago when his son was 10 or something like that). Anyway, it has a GIANT front sway bar, the stiffest springs I've ever seen on a volvo (I can't make the car bounce AT ALL!) and I'm not 100% but I think its got a locker in the diff...just a guess since it is from I.W.E Rear Ends Only (this guy turned out to be the owner/founder of IWE!). Anyway, the shell its self had very little rust what so ever! Oh, I forgot, it also had a full roll cage! :oogle:

Nice BIG sway (none on the back but apparently he had someone run grip tests on his rally car and it grips better without one!)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2037.jpg
Did I mention I found a nice header in the trunk that I'm praying fits my engine! :-D
So you can see where this is going...
Yes, I have bought both. One is now in the underground of my appartment building (the running '74 aka "The Doner"). The other one is about a 5-10 min walk away in my cousins back yard where I have access to water, power tools, air tools and a hand every now and again.
The '74 was in Nanaimo so I went over there on Sunday to pick it up. Stylie met me at the ferries, drove me there, got the transfer papers, drove me to an insurance place and then back to get the car! We then went to her place. Grabbed a camera and took a bunch of pics and went for a drive! I got it on the highway and got up to 80 mph in 5th! (yes, its in some strange code...). We survived (as did the car)! At this point I should mention the exhaust has some holes in it...and I think its running a little rich because as soon as I take my foot off the gas at speed, or downshift...I get a nice poping/backfireing noise usualy reserved for civics with fart cans! This also makes it loud (and fun to drive past people, and once your past, drop a gear and sound like I've got firecrackers under the car!).
Anyway, I then drove it arround for Monday before comming home today.
Today, when I got home, I went and picked up the '73 (the one that will be the finnished product). I met a buddy who has a tow-truck where the shell was and we got it all hooked from the back (cause the drive train was still in there and I didn't want it flailing arround the whole trip home), tied off the stearing, lifted up and were away! But we didn't make it far. To the end of the block and arround the corner to be exact. As soon as he got straight from the corner the front passenger side wheel came flying off and nearly hit a motorcylcist! He did swerve and was ok (the tire didn't hit anything in the end!). Turns out none of the lug nuts were overly tight and just got ripped right off (Proly laying on the road somewhere arround the corner). So, back down, stole some lugnuts from the rear tires (they were held by the wheel lift and wernt going anywhere) forced them back on and where away!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2077.jpg
For half a block when the driver pulls over and decides to put dollies on the front tires. The steering was tied but there was a lot of play and the car was swinging arround quite a lot (and we had a ways to go).

So finnaly were under way for the long haul! We kinda split up part way through, he took the highway and I took sorta major roads instead (it was hot out and I knew if I got cought in rush hour on the highway the car would overheat). I managed to catch him close to my buddies place and followed him there. We then backed it in, dropped it, payed the man and took a break!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2097.jpg
I got back about 2 hours later and did some putsing. Removed the bars that were over the windows, the front grill and head light bezles. Losened a bunch of bolts in preparation for a full overhaul.

Some surface rust arround where they drilled holes in the roof and just bolted bar steal over the window!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2112.jpg
Drivers side rear wheel well has the worst of the rust!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2117.jpg
The 242 is mine! '83 Turbo intercooler (came with it) and the E-codes too! :oogle:
I'm planning on stripping most of the paint off the outside of the shell and repainting the orange with black stripes (I kinda like it, though I'm not going to go to volvo to get a colour match I'm just going to buy some spray cans that look close!). As for the interior, the cage has to come out, then some sanding and rustproffing, not going to re-paint the whole thing, just touch up the places that have some surface rust. Same with the trunk. Not sure about the engine bay. It has no engine in it so its the perfect time to redo all the bushing and repaint it (there is some surface rust in there) but it looks like a lot of work removing the break cylender, stearing rack and some other ****e (has to happen because the car was carbouraited and I'm putting in a fule injected engine). I still haven't decided if the cage will be a permanant thing of if I'm just going to leave it out. In: Cool! Out: Back seat!.
So far not much progress has been made, I have extensive pics of the rally car and Stylie has pics on her cam of the doner (hopefully I'll get them soon so I can add them!).

Ya I don't know
I'm not planning on doing a prefect paint, just sand out the rust, rust prof it and then do a coar over the whole thing in primer black for now. This is all being done on a somewhat tight budget so...
I'm hoping to have the painting done in like 2-3 weeks and then be ready for the interior swap shortly after that

Ok Im posting this separate cause its more work done:
Today I went back to my buddies and started tearing stuff out of the engine bay! It took me nearly an hour to get the freakin break booster out beacuse Volvo, in there infinite wisdom, decided that the cotter pin on top of the break pedal would not come out as long as the steering column was in...GREAT! I had to drop the entire clutch and break assembly just to get the boster out so I can sand and paint under where it was. It may be a good idea so if the pin ever comes lose it you'll never lose breaks but still! If you ever want the boster out you have to spend 20 min upside down with a spaner, some wrenches and a lot of swearing!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2121.jpg
Not the best pic...I'll get a better one tomorrow
Anyway, that was the big project. I did continue to dissassemble the front clip...removed the headlight wireing harness from the front and disconected everything I could on it so it just goes through the fire wall. I'm not sure if I should be passing the whole harness through the fire wall or just leave it there and reuse it with the new engine/headlights/stuff under the hood what requires electricity...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2123.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2126.jpg
All my little pieces are getting piled at the front of the car...
I've been toying with the idea of removing all the break lines so I can sand and paint under them but I'm not sure this is the best idea considering they tend to kink realy easily (least they did on my old Mustang). I've also decided I'm not going to do all the bushing and such right now, I'm leaving the suspension how it is. This is mainly due to the fact I dont have time to order parts and do it. That and money is of the no for right now.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2124.jpg
I took the hood pin covers off the hood too!
Thats all for today! I'll be back tomorrow with more updates! (Hopefully!!)
Oh ya! I almost forgot! I was looking at my header today. It does not apear to have an O2 sensor bung in it...so I'm going to have to cut and weld one in at some point...

I remember that car, I had the option of buying it a few years ago but didn't have the money at the time. Then I saw it up forsale again on VCBCs website and thought about buying it, but then though how I'd get it to winterpeg.... I was going to post it here and let ppl know, in the next few days, but I guess you picked it up... Good job man.
It probably has a locker in it. IWE also races another 142 (or used to) in the BC sports car club. They used to go out on the track when Indy was in town.
Good luck with it, don't let it rot away

Sweet deal!
I'm not sure if it has a locker or not. IWE bought it as a spare but never used it (to my knowledge). I saw his rally car! Oh god HOT! Was in the garage beside this one! Looks so sweet even missing all the glass and dented to **** :)
Not a chance Ill let this one rust like the doner has!
Dude it is a rad car! If you know someone (or know yourself) some of the history of this car from Alberta I'd love to know it! All I know is it was bought as a shell from Alberta with a roll cage (that got modified here) and the suspension work already done.

Ok, update for today!
I got off work a little earlier than yesterday so I got a good full 4 hours worth of tearing **** out and sanding.
When I got there I set to shoving the engine wireing harness through the fire wall. This didn't take long as I had disconected everything already.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2149.jpg
So I moved on to taking off the front clip (one of the bolts was a little stiff...) and then the fenders!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2134.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2135.jpg
After that I disconected the break lines so I could move them out of the way of sanding/cleaning (thinking about it now I should have put something over the ends so nothing gets in them...will remember for tomorrow!).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2137.jpg
First blood!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2138.jpg
Once those were disconected and move I set about sanding random areas and just tinkering for a bit. I found some rust I hadn't known about behind the fenders and under them, nothing major just more surface rust!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2140.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2133.jpg
Then I set about removing the roll cage! This was a long slow process, not because it was hard but because there were about 26 bolts holding it together and in! And a hand full of plates that needed to be pried off (they were siliconed to the underbody!).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2142.jpg

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2152.jpg
Rollcage strikes back! (Same finger, just ripped the healing wound open!)
Having removed a huge number of my "major" obsticles I moved back. I had removed the tail light covers on the first day so it was time to remove the whole bracket. This was easy cause it was 3 little nuts and some wires.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2148.jpg
Speaking of wire. Once the brackets were out I shoved the harness in to the back seat.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2147.jpg
The end of the day saw pieces everywhere and a very bare looking front end, and a full interior!

Well, eventualy it WILL get a paint job. But for now its just going to be primmered black till I can afford a proper one.
I will try and keep the hood graphic but I've already munted it a bit but posably not beyond recovery! (Will post a pic in todays update)

They are rather good...though I did do some more picking today and found that there is a bit more rust than shown in the current pics. As far as the roll cage being useless I'm not so sure...It has several stickers of authentication on it from the company that built it in Alberta and then another sticker on it from the company that added the middle crossmember (it was added here in BC).
As far as the back seats being usless I think what I'm going to do is cut off the crossmember that was added here in BC because without it the back seats will be usable! (though in the words of Jerremy Clarkson: "If theres still scafolding up its unfinnished")
I do plan on racing it but not as a rally car. More than likely will just take it out to Mission to have fun in :)

Alright! Today seamed realy slow. It feals like I didnt get a whole lot done but then it was rust work so thats always slow!
So when I got there today I deicded it would be easier to clean the whole area under the hood better without the hood its self on. After that I set about brushing all the lose dirt and crap off the inner fenders and the bay it self.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2160.jpg
After that I set about scrapping and sanding the whole area. I ran in to some difficulty because the tar ****e that Volvo put on back in '73 gumms up the sand paper realy fast so I had to try and scrape as much of it off as I could before sanding. This made everything take twice as long and twice as much sandpaper as I thought it would. Tomorrow Im going to stop at a Can Tire and see if I can't find a solvent that will take it off with some steal wool or something.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2155.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2156.jpg
Once both sides were sanded to my satisfaction I applied some Rust Mort. Its something you can get at Lordco. Converts rust in to...something else :-P I'll re-read the bottle tomorrow and find out what it actualy becomes. Anyway, I spread that over all the rust I had sanded and over the whole area in general for good measure. Then I repeated the proces for the inside of the fenders themselves. They seam to be in realy good shape and I would love to remove all the rubber guard as I plan to apply a new coat of the stuff once the rust has been taken care of! (This *hopefully* will be done to the whole underbody)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2160.jpg
As far as the Sandy Lane decal...well I unfortunatly scrapped a couple holes in it in an atempt to expose rust that was cracking out...but I think if I leave it at is, mask off the areas I've uncovered and repaint them, I should be able to recover it! :-D

man if your gonna paint over that rust, your gonna need to clean it much better than you have. Unless all you can see is shiny steel, the rust will come back.

I dunknow, Ive used this rustmort stuff before and as long as you sand down till its just surface rust (ie no flakes) it takes care of it very well. Follow it up with a wash and a light sanding then use rust etching primmer...I've never had a problem.
Did it to the doors on a 242 I used to have (Chrisco has it now...) and as far as I know the rust is still gone 3 years later.
I do plan on doing a lot more sanding, the stumbling block right now is the Rubber coating. Its getting in the way of sanding everything well.

Ok, this is the update for yesterday. I had people over so I couldn't post all the work I did last night!
Yesterday was a good day! I had my other car insured so after work I stoped and picked up some supplies from Can Tire and burned over to my buddies. As it turned out he was home and not working so I pressed him in to service on the sander while I started to clean up the interior. Turns out there is yet another spot of rust I hadn't noticed that turned in to a hole with some poking and scrapping. Other than that I was quite impressed with how clean the interior is considering theres like 18 extra holes from the roll cage and about 20 unused holes that just had some duct tape over them!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2162.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2163.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2164.jpg
Then I tried out my paint striper on the tar stuff on the inside of the fenders...turns out the can was pooched so him and I made a trip back to Can Tire for a different can and more of it! By the time we got back to his place another friend had showed up from the island so he got pressed in to service! Both of them began stripping the tar off the fenders while I washed out the floors on the inside and began messing arround with some paint thinner in the engine bay to see how thats going to turn out.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2167.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2168.jpg
Eventualy my minions ran out of tar remover (turns out Im going to need a lot more of it!) so I pressed them in to other jobs while I removed an aluminum sheet that had been rivited on to where the back seats are suposed to be.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2161.jpg
In order from left to right: Tyler, my friend from the island and highschool, Me, and Steve my cousin/friend whos dads letting me stay there!
Then, during a bit of a pep talk as to what we were going to get done the next day...IT STARTED TO RAIN! I hadn't even noticed that it was clouding over till I felt water hit my face! Sufficed to say, work was over for the day. We quickly grabed a tarp, taped it to the car, threw all the tools in the boot, moved all the little bags of bolts I had spread arround (I thought it was going to be nice for weeks so I just had them laying on the ground!). Once everything was cleaned up it stopped raining, of course!

Kee-reist you guys move quick.
Looks like you've got a 28mm front sway on there. Nice. Were the bushings really fresh on the car?
Those black rims were in the "R-sport" catalog by '71 I think, as one of those "make your car a GT" kind of things like the round-gauge dash. They're custom rims by Dunlap for Volvo, and weigh something ridiculous... But I'm also going for the vintage rally thing on my remaining 142 (which apparently did participate in a former life, in Austria). I like trying to find what was available for it back in the day.
You've also got the luggage rack on the '74. Damn your eyes!
Really man, good stuff.

Umm...the bushings look ok, not SUPER new but not original. At some point in the future I will be buying all new bushing for it, just to make sure there all good
Ya...I dunknow, the rims were just on there...I'll proly take them off, clean em up and mby paint them :-P
Lol, ya, the lugage rack will not be going on the car when I'm done...nothing against it just not what I'm looking for :)

Todays post will be the work of yesterday and today.
So yeasterday I again had a helper (Tyler) and insurance (so lots of runing to pick supplies up took place...)
Anyway, the day started bad! I was planning on painting the engine bay and decided I could do a MUCH better job if I removed the steering pump and column...a secton of the column came out relativly easily...but when atempting to remove the actual pump (gear box...what ever) two of the bolts came out super easy...one nut came off just fine...and then I broke the nut off the other one! So I was left with one stud stuck so well in there I couldn't bang it out with a hammer and another one in there just as well!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2176.jpg
This got me rather agitated so I decided to go work on something else for a while and come back to it (after re-coating the whole area in WD-40).
I ended up working on the fenders, which had been partialy preped the day before. I continued cleaning them off till I was satisfied I had gotten most of the think clumps off and had exposed all the rusty areas. These got a quick squirt of a rust converter and were left for a bit to dry. While this was happening Tyler was giving the engine bay a finnal wipe down with some paintthinner and taping newspaper we had grabed from my appartment over everything that wasn't getting painted. I came and took this over and sent him to tape the fenders off while I started spraying!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2189.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2180.jpg
This was proly the funnest part of the whole project so far! It took quite a while as I was spraying thin coats and leaving it to dry for 15-20 mins each (Or till the thick areas were dry to the touch).

During this time I sprayed one of the fenders with rubber coating and Tyler began taping the other one.

After 5 coats of rust etching primer I decided that it was time for primmer black! This, again, was a long process as I was following the same technique as whith the etcher (which was grey by the way...). And while doing that, I touched up the fender that had allready been rubbered and sprayed the other one (Tyler had bought a new camera so he was messing arround with it...). Once I had 5 coats of primmer on I decided to fill in the little wholes where the iner fender wells meet the fire wall with some of the rubber coating (it took me a while to clean that area out and I figured it was somewhere that water and dirt would find a happy medium and make my life hard). After that I did another 2 or 3 coats of primmer (I can't remember now...).

In between the last couple coats I moved to the back of the car and did some tinkering. I took a spunge and some water and wiped out the area where the trunk lid seals and washed off the back of the car where the rear bumper will be eventualy (hopefully!). I also did a bit of general sanding back there just to see how it would turn out.

Me! Hard at work...
And that was my Sunday!
On to today!
When I got there today my cousin Steve and his brother Ryon were there. So of course they were beoth pressed in to service! While I remover the outer paper and taped paper to the inside of the engine bay on the drivers side, Ryon did the same thing on the other side. Steve took the vacume and vacumed out the inside of the car again and started to do some more sanding in there. Once that was all papered off I sent Ryon to remove the paper from the fenders and I set about cleaning out where the engine sits. We all took a bit of a break for dinner and only I returned to work. I did some sanding on the whole area and used a screwdriver to losten all the dirt I could and then used the vacume to clean the area. After that a quick wipe with some painthiner just to make sure I was going to have a good surface to bond too. Once that was done and allowed to dry for a bit. Then a quick spray from a rust converted. Some more drying...and I took up the rubber coating and sprayed the CR@P out of the area! Seriously, there are large section with globs of the stuff on it! I wanted to make sure it would seal it well because I'm not sure how well the rust converter works (can says I can spray it on, leave it till dry to the touch and then paint over it so...).

Steves sanding job!
And thats all that got done today! Tomorrow will also be a small day of work (if I go at all) because I might be going to a concert with Steve and Ryon (Tegan and Sarah!) but at the very least I will go pick up some more supplies. I need a grinding wheel for the grinder I'm borrowing, also a cutting disk...And posably a drill bit and some enamle or clear coat or something to give my black primer a tougher surface (I've already torn some of it off with duct tape...:omg: :-( )

Well its now been two days since I worked on the car! Yesterday I worked late then went to a concert and got home late and today it is PISSING with rain! I did go check on the car and everything seams ok, the tarp is keeping the rain out of the doors/interior and off the engine bay...
I'm off tomorrow so I'm hoping that I'll get some work done then!

Well its still raining here but I did go over and do some grinding on the car.
I was only there for about an hour but I still managed to grind 3 holes in the body and discover a ton of rust I'm not sure how Im going to deal with it.
I did take the cam but got there to discover the batts dead, so pics tomorrow.
I also discovered that its leaking arround the rear window seal so I'm going to try and take the window out as soon as it dries up and clean the whole area out and do some painting/rust work under there

Ok, so I've been realy buisy the last couple days...its been nice out for three days and I've been at the car every one of them!
So now that I have a min I will update!
So when it was raining I did manage to go and do a little work on the car, mostly on the inside and mostly with the grinder...discovering RUST! And god did I find it! Most of it should be fixable...some of it Im not sure how Im going to but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it (my sister just got a job welding so I might just finnish everything else, drop enough of an interior in to drive it, and take it to her...)
The inside of the rear wheel wells are rusted in the same places...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2378.jpg
Anyway, while it was raining I discovered that the rear window seal leaks! Badly...there were POOLS of water in the trunk and the rear quarter pannels...after cleaning that out I set about and ruberguarded the iner fenders.
My solution to a leaky window seal (It worked well!)

That was the last thing I did in the rain.
Skip forward 2-4 days (Im realy not sure how long it was) BUT IT GOT SUNNY! So, first day of sun, I was back! That was this Tuesday.
I got a ride from my cousin to Can Tire to get some supplies on Monday, got brake caliper enamel (for the engine bay! :oogle: ), a can of rust etching primer for tractors (the brush on stuff), and some other odds and ends I cant remember now...
So when I got there Tuesday I cleaned out the engine bay again, wiped it down with paint thinner and set to work with the enamel. Im not sure how many coats I did, I think the can only had enough for 3 but it looks good to me...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2372.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2380.jpg
After/during that process I began sanding and grinding and wipeing down the interios in preporation for painting! I was going to do one section at a time but decided that would take forever as I couldnt sand and prep while another section was drying.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2374.jpg
I had Wednesday off so I arrived fairly early, arround nine. First priorety was get the whole floor ready for paint. This meant that I had to get the wireing harness out. After about 30mins farting arround I finnaly got it all out and found out that its realy not that hard, and the only hard part of putting it back is going to be the fuse pannel (and posably some stuff in the engine bay but...).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2383.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2382.jpg
Once that was out I hit the floor hard with a sander and a grinder with a thick grinding wheel. After everything was prepped to my satisfaction it was time for painthiner and then the first coat!

Everything went suprisingly well and by the end of the day I was happy with how it looked. Kinda half assed and spotty but good enough for me.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2394.jpg
Then today the second coat went on. I don't think its going to need a third as it looked realy good after today!

Once the floor was painted I started mucking arround with the fenders trying to figure out how to finnish them off so I can put them on. Ended up sanding all the areas that would be covered on one and hitting it with rust etching primmer (from a sparybomb). Just after I finnished doing that I canged my mind and preped the second one so that the turn signal cup, where the fender bolts to the engine bay and the rolled lip are all going to be black.

The rust is being taken care of at a slightly later date, I'm taking the car to my sister whos a welder. But to do that, I have to get it running and operational to drive it to the island where she lives/works :-P
And don't worrie, large gaping holes will be cut to make sure ALL of it is gone!

Again, I haven't posted in a couple days so heres whats been done!
I left off starting the prep of the fenders for painting and working on the trunk for painting.
I finnished the prep on the fenders the next day and got a couple coats of rust etching primer on them. After that I got one layer of black primer on and ran out of black! So I had to finnish that another day.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2407.jpg
After that I began doing more prep work on the trunk. Sanding, vacuming, some grinding...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2411.jpg
At this point I'm going to reveal a secret thats been hideing beside my car this whole time (You can see it in some of the earlier pics...)

Don't know if you can see but it is dual carbed too!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2421.jpg
Yes! That is another 142! Aparently the guy whos property this is has been keeping his wifes car (she died 16 years ago) this whole time under a tarp! I knew the car was there but had shown interest in it years ago and been told it was of sentimental value and was going to sit there till it was a pile of rust! So I left it alone.
Then about a week ago my cousins dad comes up to me and tells me if theres any parts the other car dosn't have or are broken I am welcome to take whatever I want from this car!
So what I'm thining is that Im going to take the orange and black seats, and mate them with my black interior to make the inside match the out :)

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2420.jpg
Anyway, enough of my second parts car...
I have also begun prep work on the front clip. Im still not sure what colour combination/kind of paint Im using on all of it but I'v started santing and part of it has recieved a few light coats of etching primer (till I ran out). I also preped the steering column. I think Im going to paint it orange to match the outside of the car. :-P

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2465.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2478.jpg
During all this I wiped down the whole dash/whats left of the console with some paint thiner to get rid of as much dust and crap to see how it looks. I think Im going to stick with this dash even though its got two holes drilled in it for the dash mounted guage (It only has a small crack wheres the other one has 2 large ones).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2464.jpg
I finaly finnished to my satisfaction, the prep on the trunk (after removing the fill hose for the gas tank) and wiped the whole thing down with paint thiner. I also got some black primer and finnished the fenders.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2476.jpg
All this happened over the last few days and the rest of this was from today.
When I got there today the first thing I did was rubber coat the trunk. This didnt take long and actualy looks half decent considering some of its going to have to be cut out when I do the rust work for the rear wheel wells.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2483.jpg
After that was done I decided to see how the fenders look back on the car! This was proly one of the most satisfying and dissapointing parts of the whole project to date! While the fenders look good I realised I missed the inner lips on the fenders and hadn't painted black high enough in the engine bay to match up with where the fenders are black. Other than those little points I love how everything turned out :-D
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2486.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2488.jpg
Once that was done I preped the inside of the roof and painted that with some rust etching primer and then over that with a couple coats of black primer. I also got another coat on half the front clip.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2491.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2489.jpg
Me having fun writing on my roof...will eventualy get covered...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2494.jpg
While I had the rubber stuff out I also put some in the front of the rear wheel wells...just cause it I had done some rust morting in there and hadnt sealed it after.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2500.jpg
Once all that was done I took the rear window out, sanded and put the first coat of yellow paint on it. I also took a scraper to the window and cleaned all the excess sealer off of it. The seal itself seams good so Im going to resue it, just needs to be cleaned up a bit!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2503.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2504.jpg
Not sure if I'm going to have time tomorrow but I might get over there to put a second coat on the rear window and re-seal the seal to the window (I'm not so sure what order this should be done it...if the window gets sealed in and the seal on to the car all at once of before it goes in or what...).

You don't have to weld those floor patches on.There's a product being used in body shops now called panel bonder by 3M.It's being used to glue roofs, 1/4 panels & door skins on vehicles.Alls you do is grind around the edges of a patch and grind the car to match, run a bead around the patch then screw it down with sheet metal screws.Dries hard and completely seals the two together.Unbelieveably simple, with very predictable results. You can buy cut off discs for the angle grinder to remove the rusty metal.

Sounds like a good idea. However id use pop rivets though. much neater than screws.

I use sheet metal screws in places that a clamp won't reach, after curing remove the screws and fill the remaining holes with some urethane seam sealer.

Ok so time for another multi-day post!
When I left of it was last Thursday and had just ripped out the rear window and sanded and painted the edges...
So on Friday when I got there I knew I was going away for the long weekend and wanted that window back in! So I washed the area, washed and scraped the edges of the window, cleaned the seal, and stuck it back in! I then used some black silicone seal and ran a bead along the top and down the edges of the top of the seal (I figure water shouldnt be going in the bottom). And then did the sides and bottom of the iner part of the seal (where the glass is). Thats all I did.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2757.jpg
I didn't get back to the car till Wednesday. On Wednesday I ripped out the gas tank, sanded the edges of its bracket and Painted the whole area with rubber coating.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2755.jpg
Thats what the whole inside of the tank is like!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2756.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2753.jpg
I also finnished painting the front clip in rust coating and started painting it black but ran out of paint!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2754.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2759.jpg
During this time I also painted the steering pieces (The middle bracket black and the front in rust etching primmer).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2760.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2761.jpg
Then I didnt go Thursday but had Friday off so I insured the donor car, did some running arround and dropped it off!
Once the donor car was there and I finnaly took a good look at the doors I discovered that the chrome trim arround the top was not bolted on, as I had thought, and was acctualy welded on! So moving it to the orange doors was not an option...so I just transftered doors!
I did each door slightly differently and each one worked with varying degrees of success...

Dosn't look TOO bad! :-P
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2769.jpg
And part way through the second door I cracked my thumb nail...IN THE MIDDLE!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2771.jpg
I didn't put the orange doors back on the yellow car properly cause I might keep them!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2787.jpg
I went back today, Sunday to do more to the interior.
First I ripped out the other front seat and sorted out the wires for the seats and the belts.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2789.jpg
After that I kinda putsed arround working on random other projects, looked at the access panel for the fuel tank. Then finnished painting the front clip and steering column.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2791.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2792.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2793.jpg
I then tackled the rear seats. The bottom half proved relatively easy but the top still eludes me. Its held on by two brackets that have been screwed from the inside of the seat to the metal frame work of the car. No idea how to take it out!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2794.jpg
No matter! I moved on and decided to remove the wireing harness next! This may have been premature because I might have to move the car again but if so itll be by hand!
I started in the trunk, and disconected all the lights and the fuel tank and moved forward to the seat wires. I had planned on stoping there so I could still drive the car arround...but...
I dont actualy have pics of it but Iv started to remove the dash from the other car and therefore wanted to remove the dash from this car! So...I took all the wires from the center console out...it was at this point I decided to disconect the batt in case of shorts...
Once that was done off came half the dash and out came the instrument pannel!
And from there I just gave up on the idea of driving the car arround and ripped EVERYTHING out!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2803.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2806.jpg
I even fully moved the windshield wiper motor over to the other car!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2795.jpg
Once that was done I began running the wires in to the other car. All the wires for the back are in the trunk, the seatbelt wires are where the seats go and the wires for the engine are in the engine bay! I didn't take everything off the fuse block because that seamed like a hugely labour intensive way of moving everything so I just unscrewed the old block and put the new one on!

Im hoping to move the engine over this weekend! Im in the precess of lining up help and will be looking in to a hoist tomorrow. This means that before then I have to drain the rad, remove the rad and front clip, figure out how to punch out the pin holding the shifter on, find and disconect everything I can't easily move with the engine (I'm hoping to just leave the manifolds and air box with the injector lines all connected!) But well see how that goes...

so much progress! thats not the tb way! :P
on another note well done! good to see someone running a b20e. what are your plans for it?

It is not the TB way! But it is also mby a little slopier than it should be...everythings being done on a time line so I am proly cutting several corners I dont know about (this is the first time Iv done anything like this!)
As for the engine, not sure yet. If I get the money I would love to do a full over haul, get everything profesionaly machined and balanced...
I might try upgrading to MSnS...depending on funding and abuility to design and build a fuel rail for it...I'v heard some talk of there being a comon mod for fuel injected B20s but Im not sure where it comes from, who does it, or how much it is :-P

And time for another update! On the eve of Engine transfer day! :-D
Ok, so I left off somewhere...something like changing dashes :-P
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2816.jpg
I reached this decision because I decided the cracks in the 74's dash were less of an eye sore than the little rust spots and faded look of the 73s (that and the 73s had a couple holes from the dash mounted Rpm guage...)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2812.jpg
Anyway, once that was all out it made working under the dash so much nicer! I changed my break and clutch pedals, cleaned some air vents and generaly mucked about for a while before putting the "new" dash in. Oh, I also changed the key over to the 73's so I can actualy START the car when its done!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2815.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2817.jpg
After the dash was in I set about re-wireing everything. Found out that they changed the column a bit and had to use the older style switches (which were flush) as the newer ones were designed for a bit of an indent.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2819.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2820.jpg
Anyway, Im sure I have ADD as I can never start and finish one thing at a time so during this time I also finnaly removed the back seats (in the end I feal like a bit of a spanner for struggling to get them out...they just lift up and out!). Also, I put in the passenger side seatbelt, back trim and door seal? What ever you want to call the piece of plastic that goes arround the door frame.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2821.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2822.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2830.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2831.jpg
Once all this was done I set to taking off the front clip of the yellow car to make the swap easier. This was met with LOTS of rusted bolts thet wernt so much unscrewed as pulled out. Removing the front clip also meant removing the front bumper!
This proved to be one of the hardest and most frustrating tasks yet! All the bolts were rusted and nothing wanted to come easily! By the end of the first day at it I had removed the bumper its self and one of the mounting brackets (going to need some sanding and painting before that rusty heap goes near my car!)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2828.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2829.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2834.jpg
While working on that I also began draining and disconecting various parts of the breaking system (I had to disconect the lines near the breaks themselves because they were attached to the bumper brackets...a change from the 73 style...)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2836.jpg
I also moved the air box and discovered that Im going to need to drill some holes in my engine bay to make it mountable...so for now its just sitting upside down in the bay. The fuel lines for old K-jet are flexable so they can be bent and moved arround quite easily (something volvo CLEARLY forgot when they updated to B-21 K-jet where they're a pain in the ass to do anything with!)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2833.jpg
After that happened I had several heavy work days and didnt get much done, but the forcast for this weekends partay is rain so I did go there both days and set up a GIANT tarp to cover everything...sort of...I also moved the 73 closer so we wount have to drag the engine hoist so far over semi-soft ground (I do have some plywood down but...).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2840.jpg
Then today I got off early from my last day of work and went at it with a will!
I got the front clip of, rad drained and out, break booster out, shifter off (turns out I only gained about 2-3 inches from that but whatever...it'll help)
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2841.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2847.jpg
I also got the car jacked up on 4 jacks so I can get under there and tear out the gas tank, lines and pump (to do tomorrow).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2844.jpg
The main reason for the jacking was so I could get the driveshaft to spin so I could get at all the bolts holding the trans to the driveshaft! This proved to be REALY easy once I was under there...but I tried losening the transmission mount bolt with no luck so I might be moving the motor trans and bracket as one :-P
Other than that I did some general prep, got all the fuel lines disconnected, moved the throttle cable over, did some more re-wireing...and called it a day!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2845.jpg
Tonight a buddy arrives from Vic and tomorrow were met by Acid8000 and another friend to do the swap! (Acid will miss the actual removal but should be there for putting it in).

08-22-2007, 03:35 AM
Ok, so that happened on Saturday and I've been in a world of excitment since then!
Finnaly all the pieces that were scatered all over the yard are comming together to form my car!
So, lets start with the transplant!
One of my friends from Vic came over Friday night to give me a hand.
Early Sat morning we went to a little rental shop like a block from my place to get an engine hoist (this was at arround 8:30)
We were at the car hooking up the hoist by 9. I didn't have any chains or rope, as would usualy be used, but I did have a giant webbing strap like long-haul truckers use.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2849.jpg
Once that was wound up to my satisfaction I set about removing motor mount nuts while Josh (from the island) began removing the transmition mount...this turned out to be a futile effort so we just disconected it from the body and left it on the trany. He then removed the 4 bolts holding the trany to the axle and we were away!
After much wiggling and jacking up and down with both the hoist and a hydrolic jack we managed to get the engine out!
Thats Josh!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2850.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2852.jpg
Engine surfing!

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2864.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2865.jpg
I then set Josh the task of cleaning it while I got under the car to remove the fuel lines we would need to hook it back up. I figured it would be easier to run them while there wasnt an engine in there...as it turned out, it would have been fine ither way as I cut a bit of a corner. The 73 that everything is going in to was carborated, this ment that it only had one fuel line, where as the injection has 3! One pump, one return, and one from the charcoal filter. I deleted the filter and am using the old carb line as the return, and will just pipe it in parallel to the overflow tank. I had to mod some hoses to make it all hook back up but it looks like itll work :)

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2878.jpg
Anyway, while I was putting that back in my cousin Ryon (Steves brother) showed up to lend a hand putting the engine in. His dad was also arround to give us some tips and lend a hand. Putting it in woth the trany mount proved to be imposable! We couldnt control the engine (some of the webing had slipped) and the mount, and push the whole thing in all at once! Of course it was then we discovered that the whole mount could be taken off the transmission with two bolts and not have to take the rubber mount its self off!
Once that was off it slipped right in! Of course not before scratching a bunch of my lovely paint! :-P
Ryons the guy in blue, and thats his dad Asko, behind him.

Ryon and I lifting the enginless car!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2879.jpg
Once that was in I set to re connecting EVERYTHING! This didn't take long but in the prosses I discovered that we knocked three wires off the top of the transmission and have no idea how they go back on! I think I can reach up and plug them in with it in place, now I just need to know where they go!
Me getting angry with the transmission mount.

Relaxing after a hard days work!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2901.jpg
Rather than letting this hold me up I continued to reinstall things till it got quite late...and Acid (Jason) finnaly arrived and we went to pick him up from the ferries.
Of course Jason arrives AFTER all the work is done!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2903.jpg
Then on Sunday, Jason and Josh had to leave early, so I was up nice and early and over at the car.
First I brought over the front clip and took all the newspaper off it to see how everything turned out. Looks great! Now I just wish I had some volvo orange (thats what Im guessing the whole car is...) to touch up the orange on the clip.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2906.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2908.jpg
Once that was determined ready, I set to installing the bumper mounts. These required slight modification because I couldn't get the lower bolts (on ither side!) out that held the sterring rack. So I just cut that hole off the bracket and stuck them on with only the two big bolts and the one top one I could get out.

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2910.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2912.jpg
Once that was done I set to installing the clip. This didn't take long and I soon had the wireing harness run, rad in, and my first two "mods" though of...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2913.jpg
I am using a pieced of the internal venting from the donor car as the plastic from its intake was a little broken (still might use it if that looks REALY bad :-P ). Also not sure where to mount the Rad overflow...but since I have hood pins...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2915.jpg
Then on Tuesday I returned to finnish connecting some electrical and just general instalation. I haven't been taking nearly as many pics of all the things I've been doing so...
Yesterday I finnished some wireing on the engine, insalled seatbelts in the back (and the drivers side), got the back trim nearly done and got the guages all swaped arround to how I liked them and put in (the old speed-o had some issues and was in miles, but the one out of the 73 was in Km and workes great). I also sanded and got a good coat of rust etching primmer on the under side of the hood. I had planned on doing a lot more painting but it was realy damp out and the paint took rearly 3 hours to dry so I decided against doing more.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2917.jpg

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2933.jpg
Then today I got the fuel pump in the car, semi-wired, got a couple coats of black on the hood, painted the mounting surfaces of the hood brackets in rust etcher and installed them as well as both fenders! I also got the headlights in and was working on the marker/turnsignals when I called it quits.
Yes, it does say THE 142...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2936.jpg
Note: Do not use the rubberising from Wal-Mart! It may be MUCH cheaper, but it is also TERABLE! I'm going over it all in the good stuff from Crappy Tire...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2938.jpg
Tomorrow I'm hoping to instal the batt tray, get the fuel lines all finnalised and mabey (if I get the battery it self in) pump some fuel through them to make sure theres no leakes! It might even RUN tomorrow! Also going to switch to working on the interior for a bit, get all my tools out of there, vacume it...figure out how Im going to mount the top of the back seats (they changed the mounting style so Im not so sure how its going to work out...)

I would LOVE a garage! I hate cleanin bird poo and pine needles off EVERYTHING!
Well, to start its going to be a DD, selling 242Ti. I have big plans for it eventualy, but they require money so its on hold for now.
I'd like to MSnS is just because right now everything is so simple so It would proly be easier to start from this rather than having to re-wire a bunch...will need to figure out how to mount a ton of sensors the car dosn't currently have or use :-P
Also, and this would be before that, I'd like to take the engine out again and have it profesionaly balanced and rebuilt (I can do the rebuilding, but need to send it somewhere for balancing). Other than that who knows, its gona be a constant project and I don't plan on needing it running ALL the time so I can take **** out and work on it whenever :-D

Oh god I hate pine needles aswell.. Gettin in my rain gutterz and ****!
Nice progress once again. MS is so cheap to both install and run it is so worth it over the horror of k-jet. A nice cam some head work and MS and you have a nice streetable b20.
But for the specifics on the subject search is your friend!
Nice progress! coming together and looking like a car at last!
He's running D-jet actually, and it's probably not too hard to convert it anyway, and won't cost much, do it before the car is setup, you won't regret it!

Thank you all muchly for the support!
And heres an update for the last few days!
Ok so I left off had just installed the gass tank and had dome most of the pipeing...and some wireing. That was Wednesday...
On Thursday when I got there I began prep work for the rear-end/tail lights. There were several small rust spots and some peeling paint. So it got a good sanding and then a coat of yellow rust primmer.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2939.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2945.jpg
While that was drying I installed the headlights and the battery tray (which got sanded, rust primered and painted black).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2940.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2942.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2944.jpg
Once the yellow was dry (it was in the sun all day) I sprayed two quick coats of gloss black and installed the tail lights!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2947.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2951.jpg
In between all this I was checking wire, re-piping the fule pump and testing it buy pumping it in to a bottle! I also set the hoods up and decided that as bad as the orange one is its going to be my current hood (to much work taking the hood pins off to use the other one).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2952.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2953.jpg
Then on Friday I cleaned out the inside to put the interior in. This ment taking all my tools out, vacuming the whole thing (multiple times) and finnishing the wireing of the center console.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2954.jpg
While I was doing that I decided I needed the hood poper (the pins wern't going to cut it) so I had to move my briliant idea for the overflow resevoir!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2955.jpg
Yes! My first true TD instal! ZAP STRAPS!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2956.jpg
I also installed the battery and with the help of my multi-meter I set to testing and plugging in lights. At this point I learned the inermost workings of the turnsignal switch and solinoid! It took me about an hour to take everything appart and put it back together (only to find that it worked the whole time I just didnt have the key in the right position! :-P )
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2958.jpg
While that was taking place I took a break and installed the hood! This proved awkward by myself but I got it on. Spent 20-25 min trying to get it to sit nicely (still sticks up a bit but...).
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2960.jpg
Then came one of the biggest problems I've had! The rear bumper. Apparently between '73 and '74 they changed the bumper style and how they mount to the car. This meant that I couldn't just bolt it on. I even checked the other car and it was the same thing! So...ya...lets just say its on there for now...THE T-Brick way! Zap-Straps! Lots of them! And some string for good measure!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2961.jpg
It dosn't LOOK to bad...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2962.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2963.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2965.jpg
Part way through doing the bumper I took a break and put the rear carpet and whole back seat in! But apparently I didn't take any pics of it  :-( Sorry...
Right at the end of the day, just before I was planning on leaving I decided to test the heater core (I had been trying to decide to keep it of not) and discovered that its blown! Nothing, the fan dosn't even whine! I checked all the connections, there all good...but nothing. So I did some ninja-piping and compleetly removed it from the rad/engine.
Then first thing today (after getting Steve to help me tighten two bolts that required two people) I ripped the whole thing out! Took proly 20 min and was not NEARLY as hard as I thought it would be...I didn't even have to cut anything! I have debated putting the core from the other car in but I dont realy want to try and install the whole vacume assist system so I think Im just going to go heat-less for now.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2967.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2968.jpg
Its at this point that I become VERY close to being ready and stop taking pictures and just do!
I installed the carpet, front seats, and plastic (all over). Once that was done I tried testing my fuel system (make sure I had no pressure leaks). AND the fuel pump wouldn't come on. Half hour of testing and I found the wire that had fallen off! And then found a leak!
After that was all sorted I tried starting it. No luck. It would turn over, fire, rev a bit, and then die. Asko was arround and we decided that it wasn't getting enough fuel (I only had a part of a jery can in the tank) so I borowed his car to run to a gas station with my can and get it filled ($28!! For premium...but still!). While I was doing this I also realised I had two HUGE vacume leaks. One where the vacume assist for the heater in the old car conncected and another for where the charcoal filter was supposed to be connected. After plugging those and putting gas in the tank SHE RAN! For the first time in like a month, at exactly 9:50am she ran all on her own! I walked arround and checked EVERYTHING while she ran! Turns out its a good thing because I had used an overflow tank that had been left by whomever had rallyed the car. It was overflowing (thankfully out of the car). So that got changed and she ran BEAUTFLY! Albiet with no exhaust...at all...just the manifold to nothing.
That had to change, but the exhaust pipe would not fit up past the oil filter so I couldnt get it in! So I did an oil change. Needed to be done anyway because I had no idea when it had last been done. So out came the oil, off came the filter (undid by hand so Im guessing not to long ago) and on went the exhaust. All it is is straight pipe, it broke off on the first muffler on the yellow car (the car had two) and the whole system was welded together so there is little to nothing that I could do about it!
It is at this point that a side adventure begins! I went to Lordco to grab some oil, a filter, exhaust gasket and an air filter (my old one was in SAD shape!). All I ended up getting was the oil. I forgot the oil filter and they didn't have the gasket (had it at a different location) and they said there was nothing they could do for an air filter and that was that. So I went down the street to Coquitlam Auto parts. I spent half an hour with the guy there, supper helpfull, when we discovered the part number on the filter didn't exist any more we moved to sizes and measured the thing! Took forever but we finnaly found one, lo and behold from K&N! Unfortunatly he couldn't get me one, or an exhaust gasket, but he did have an oil filter (I'm not familiar with the brand so I realy dont know how good it is). I decided I could do without the exhaust gasket (I have the header that will be going in soon) and just reused the old one.
I went back to the car and for no particular reason called Lordco again and gave them the K&N part number. Sure enough they had one at another location and would get it brought to them. So exhaust went on, filter went on, and oil went in!
Once that was all done I went and took the center console sides out of the other orange car (they have holes cut for speakers and I like the look of the instal!) and put one of those in.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2969.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2972.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2973.jpg
At this point Asco is thinking about leaving for the weekend and I want the car out (he has a 1 ton that blocks the way to the back so people can't tow his boats off!).
So now its go time! The car comes off the jacks, I crawl under it and fully bolt up the drive train (took some rolling to get at all the bolts). I also got some bailing wire and wired the lose end of the exhaust in place (it was fairly rigid all on its own). Once that was done were ready to move! Not...car woun't start! Turns out when I drilled out the old vin and rivited in the new one (that happened somewhere back there...) one of the old rivit ends had dropped down the pillar and landed on the fuel pump fuse and shorted it! Thank god for the spare fuse block and we were back running! Ok, so somewhere between it running and the oil change I blead the brakes. It's at this point now (running) that I discover something must have done wrong because my Break Failure light is on and dosn't go off! Oh well! Reverse! Grind! Die! Sh1t! Under the car! Adjust the clutch...Back in! WERE OFF! At 4:50pm she drove! All on her own! It was earthshatering to me! I was so excited and happy!
Parked it out on the side of the house, discovered I hadn't screwed on the rad cap so it was puking some colant but that was an easiy fix...backed it in by the shop so we could get the air hose to the tires. I went and stole some lug nuts from the yellow car so I have 5 on all wheels (and a spare!). Got a call from Lordco, filters in! Ran up there, got the filter, went to an insurance place, got a temp permit for three days (Tomo...today till Monday).
Did some clean up. Put all the tools I could posably need in the trunk...everything from sockets to oil to water to a spare tire to random wire...everything and anything I could imagine needing for this adventure!
Whered the car go!?!!?!?

I'm planning on driving it to my house later this morning, grab some more stuff, and head to my old work. Pick up my paycheque, deposit it on my way to the ferrys and go to Victoria. This weekend will be the true test to see how many bugs I need to work out!

bondo over the holes....... weld in the holes. and put some metal in those floors its a very nice car i just dont wana see it get half assed filling holes with bondo ftl. i love the 142 though nice progress.
It looked better with one tail, and I reckon you should keep the bootlid clips and hold the boot on with it, to suit how the rest of it looks.

Im talking about bondo over the 5 holes that were drilled in the roof for the window restraints...I might be able to get my sis to weld them in when she does the floor and rear wheel wells (this could be getting done as early as this week if she does in fact come over!)
And don't worry, there will FOR SURE be metal in the floor, its just the holes that are in question...
It looked better with one tail, and I reckon you should keep the bootlid clips and hold the boot on with it, to suit how the rest of it looks.
Im not sure what you mean by one tail...
I will do a FULL update on the trip to the island, including all the little things I never realy thought of (and the big things that went wrong...right from the get go!)
I think I was thinking of the bumpers, must've been distracted and posted that, it looked good without the front bumper.

Ok, here we go! The first time this car drove ("legaly") under its own power in posably more than 15 years!
So I got up at like 5am Saturday morning and ran over to the car. The plan was to bring it back here, grab my stuff, head to my old work to grab my last paycheque and run for an 8 or 9 ferry. I think I got there arround 5:40ish and did some running arround grabing last min things (including a rearview mirror that untill then handn't thought about...)
And at about 6 I set off for my place! :-D And promptly hoped under the car to adjust the clutch then set off again!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2984.jpg
Parked behind my place.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2986.jpg
All the way here the car felt realy slugish...the engine was running...proly as good as it had in the other car (which was ok, but not PERFECT). Anyway, I got here, grabed some stuff...and decided I had better take it for a bit of a run arround the area cause it realy felt like I had a sticking break or something...So to a hill! Now...the hills in my neighbourhood are QUITE steep, the kinda hills I take a run at in the Turbo and MIGHT make it up in 3rd but it can be a struggle.
I'll put it this way...out of gear, breaks off, e-break off...I'd sit there! The car wouldn't roll or move or ANYTHING! I could get out and walk arround it and get back in! So not so good...
I drove it a little longer and it only got worse the more I used the breaks...an **** started to smell real bad! So I came home. Not sure what to do I looked on here, found a million horror storries...then called my dad and he said all I could do was replace the calipers :-(
And it was off to my "parts yard". I figured it was the rear drivers side (the rin its self was HOT, like BURNING, to the touch...so off it came, along with the caliper, and then off came the caliper from the parts car! On it went, gravity blead the breaks and set off again!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2987.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2988.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2990.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2992.jpg
This time I didn't get far before I noticed it again! So...back to the yard! Decided it was mostly the front passenger side this time, but also came to the conclusion that all of them were going to go so I might as well do them all!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2994.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2995.jpg
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2996.jpg
I'll be briefe, turns out the front breaks had been upgraded to 240 turbo rotors and calipers (meaning I had to change the rotors as well so the calipers would fit!). The front drivers side was a pain in the ass, had to move break lines arround...
The first break was started at about 8 and I put the last rim back on at arround 1...so in 5 hours I removed 8 rims and calipers, 2 rotors and installed 8 rims, 4 calipers and 2 rotors! I now feal RETARDEDLY comfortable arround the breaks in that car :-P
Anyway, at about 1 I headed off to work, grabed my cheque, went to a bank, deposited, and went to the ferry terminal! I was there in time for the 3! (Quite off a 8 or 9...) I even had time to fix my wiper switch, which exploded while I was trying to use them.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2997.jpg
And then once on the ferry I discovered that the zap-straps and some of the string holding my bumped had given up the ghost so I got out the bungies and hung it on.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF2998.jpg
Now, this whole time I didn't have my gas guage plugged in (I needed a short wire with two male spade clip ends on it to connect it) so I realy had no idea how much gas I had! And half way to Jason's (Acid8000), going up a hill...it began to cough. Luckily I made it up the hill and basicly coasted the rest of the way to a gas station and filled her up! ($29 of premium!)
And finnaly, after getting started at 5am I got to Jasons at arround 5:45! We did some light driving later that night, had to stop and re-hang the bumper once...I was a little skitish with the bumper hanging off so no shenanigans.
Later that night...
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF3001.jpg
The next day we went to his parents place and I made my fuel wire! AND THE GUAGE WORKS! I know there simple...but I was happy to know how much gas I had! We also wrapped some of the vacume lines in electrical tape cause some of them were looking a little cracked (no idea how I'm going to replace them...) And then I had to drive my lil sis to Nanaimo!
These were taken at Jasons place

The silver 244 turbo and gun metal 142 are his and the silver (Im not sure what it was) is the people living upstairs'.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF3012.jpg
Was all good, stoped in Duncan and put another $20 in. Was a decent drive, the car did great! I have to adjust the clutch some more as its not fully disengaging (I ground the gears a couple times trying to shift  :-( ). Anyway, when I got to Nan we parked, droped stuff of at the rents. And I went to visit Stylie!
Parked in Nanaimo!
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/SmesWorld/DSCF3017.jpg
The next day I drove my sis arround for a bit and then headed for the ferry! I got there at 5:30 and was told I might not be on a ferry till 9:30! Now, this was bad because my insurance ran out at midnight and the ferry was an hour and a half, the drive was arround another hour and a half...so I'd be cutting it CLOSE! So the race against the clock was on! But it was all good because they decided to have an extra sailing at 8:40! So I got to the other side arround 10:15. And put my foot down! It was great! She makes one HELL of a noise inside (I've been told its not to bad outside...but I let Jason drive the car while I stode and listended and it sounded LOUD!) Anyway, I got almost to the Second Narrows bridge and started to hear a strange noise from the back....so emergency pull over and stop! Turns out the string had entirely gave up and the bungies were hanging on, but it was dragging on the ground. I tried to get it to hang back up but was running out of time so I said f**k it! Threw the bumper in the passenger seat and set off! More...turned the key to set off and...NOTHING! Not even a click! So, out, pop the hood, grab a light! And sure enough the little wire to the starter had come off! So, clip in on, turn the key, were off! If I wasn't enough of a heat score before...
But I made it! 11:20 I pulled in to my underground! The trip-o-meter, which got re-set at the start of the trip, reads 468Km traveled! Not bad for a 30+ year old car put together by me!
Whered the bumper go!

Oh the bumper isn't going back on till I can bolt it!
I'm going to see if I can weld a tube to a plate, drill some holes, and mount it that way...it wount have the shock-things...but then it didn't originaly so...
Besides, thats the wrong bumper for it (its supposed to have one of the slim style) but I dont have one...

Eric,
Is There A Reason That You Capitalize Every Word In Your Post? It Is Like Starting A New Sentence With Every Word!
Nice work on the 142. As I read your post I was waiting to get to the part where the bumper falls off!
