View Full Version : Rust Repair/Paint Pics & Exhaust Vids
Got sick of my beater GT looking like this:
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/80gt/Mixer009.jpg
So I took all the rust:
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/80gt/CIMG0436.jpg
And turned it to this:
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/80gt/CIMG0458.jpg
And came with this final product when it was all said and done:
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m56/80gt/CIMG0507.jpg
I grinded all the rust off I could and used a primer/sealer to paint over everything. I just wanted the rust to be stopped and the car to look somewhat uniform. I blacked out all the trim again as well. I like the way it came out, it just needs to be lowered again to close "the gap". Thinking about painting the wheels a flat black since they aren't really all that nice. I think it would go well with the silver/black paint scheme. I also have my badges blacked out to go back on. Anyone with Pshop skills want to sample me some different wheel colors?
Here some exhaust vids I took aways back while swapping exhausts.

2.25" gutted cat one muffler: (just swapped it over from our other 242 which wasn't run for awhile..hence the water spitting out)

looks a lot better to get rid of that ****ty rust. I hate it. Being doing it myself for the last few days, managed to get some embedded in my eye too! Needles in the eye are lovely.
I actually don't midn the primer colour from a distance. Are you putting the trim back on or filling the holes on the body?
What is your sig from? It's almost as nice as Homer's :-D
Take it you surf? Teahupo in your avatar there, insane ****! Is that the infamous Laird drop?

Yea, it's been bothering me for years. I just never wanted to tackle it. I just bought a grinder and spent a few days doing it. Glad I did.
My sig is from Into the Blue with Jessica Alba. Awesome movie...no clue what its about haha. And yes that is senior Hamilton dropping in at Teahupoo.

Yea, it really completes the exhaust system...
I got it cheap to replace the exhaust system that was rotten and it does the job, but doesn't sound too great. Never noticed the tink until later and I'm too apathetic to do anything about it right now.

you should really put some paint over that primer.
primer will absorb moisture and contaminants.

I know I should and would like to. It's just beyond my means right now. I've thought about the $50 paint job for now, but am a little over painting the GT right now. It's my DD so it was a strain on my transportation just to get this much done. Not to mention the fact that I have loads of bodywork to be done before I give her a good paintjob. It's good advice that I can't take unfortunately.

and look hot.
Although if you're gonna leave a car primer, red oxide is the way to go.

So you're telling me that you warmup your car every time you drive it, watching that oil temp gauge you have installed in your car until it reaches operating temp around 220 F or so, which happens to take well over 5 minutes, before you start revving over 4K? Or are you the genius who thinks his motor is warm when his water temperature is at operating temp? Either way..thanks for the compliment there buddy!

Dude, I'm being sarcastic. You can't watch your oil temp because you don't have an oil temperature gauge in your GT guage cluster, and I highly doubt you have one installed elsewhere. Like I said, you probably think your water temperature gauge indicates whether your motor is warmed up. Just stop posting altogether, seriously. Good threadjack.

i do have a oil temp gauge i made a extra pod where the clock and two vents would be its in my thread on prejects and restorations brians242gt the oil temp gauge is where the clock is in that pic, and then i also have the r sport or "gt" cluster with ethe rest of the gauges, oil pressure water temp voltage ect... but anyways, nice car keep that gt on the road im glad you stoped the rust. what color are you thinking about painting it? or are you gona just drive around in primer? because if you do that the rust repair will rust again fast because primer is poruouse and absorbes water like yld244 said.

What do you mean those wheels are not nice looking?
Those wheels are VERY nice looking.
Do not paint them black. Black wheels are a major no-no.
Cool wheels, mkay?

Please for the love of god do NOT paint the BBS mesh black! I know those wheels :) I say leave them silver or maybe a darker graphite [or have them refinished?] but not black.

for what its worth, i've had great success with RustBullet sealer straight on bare metal or scuffed surface rust. if you know you'll be doing a full re-paint in the future, slapping this stuff on any rust areas is a great way to buy you more time to finish the rest of the project
the big problem is that primer doesnt stop rust from forming without the base and clear coat on top of it.

The reflection on the windshield (grey car) and the passenger seat rest make an image similar to the mask of Buckethead (the guitarist).
