I just herd that volvo made a 5 cyl deisel for the 2 series range.... whats the engine number? I cant tell if the numbers I'm looking at are for the 6cyl or 5cyl :P is it the same block as the 850 engines? could you possably use the pistons out of it for high copression pistons? or use the block with the 850 head ect so I can have a 5 cyl in a 2 series car? or use the mounts ect to fit a 850 into a 2 series?

You've got some things mixed up. The 240 Diesel was a straight 6 iron block made by Audi/VW (based on the 4cyl Audi/VW diesel). D24 is the engine code. The D24T was the turbo version used in the 700 series.

There was an Audi 5cyl diesel I believe.

There are new Volvos outside of North America (Europe for sure, not sure about Australia) that use the D5 diesel engine. This is a new design but I don't know if it's all-Volvo, or shared.

There are no factory engine mounts to drop a 5cyl into a 240. No 200 series ever came with a 5cyl of any type. The closest was the I6 in the 960 that can donate some parts to make fitting a 5cyl in a RWD car less difficult.

cool, I just was surfing wikipidea, and I think someone got it wrong, cos the 200 series ses it has a 5 cyl, but that aside, how hard is it to fit a turbo 850 5 cyl? or any good 5 cyl?

how hard is it to fit an s80 engine into a 262? :P

In some of my Volvo factory diesel manuals it talks about the D20 a 5 cylinder, though I don't think they ever when into production in Volvo's. Obviously they were thinking about it. I think those are the engines that wound up in the Audi's. Wikipedia does mention the D20 with the Volvo's. Easy mistake. Don't be so hard on him, Towery.

I've got a D24T in my 262, it's pretty freakin' sweet. It's the only one I've heard of. I've got big plans for it too.

OK kiddies why back last century when the nice new 240s replaced those old boxy 140s Volvo used the 5 cylinder in the domestic taxi market, and the 6 cylinder was for the civilian market.
They're tough looking cranks, rods stout 25mm pins with thick walls.
Could be an interesting basis for a plus 30 psi turbo diesel project.

Preliminary word on custom forged pistons for silly high boost is that for the typical sized piston, the diesels have really large diameter pins and those pins need big meaty pin bosses.

Going to send a sample next UPS trip.

the new 5 cylinder diesel is sold here in Australia from last year.

The 240 diesel wasn't sold here, and the new D5 is the first diesel we have had from Volvo.

Firstly, no 850 engines or engine parts were shared between the 2/7 and the 8 series, that I know of.

Secondly I don't think we ever got 2 series diesels here, and I've only ever seen one 700 TD - and that was possibly a private import (though I don't remember).

Which leads me to my next point - not all of the information you'll get on this forum is relevant to Australian volvos, especially parts and car availability (good luck finding a 960, for example). Also bear in mind that we have the steering + brake stuff on the right side of the car, which gives less room for a turbo etc, and brings up extra issues that you won't find when you read a write up of an engine swap, done by someone in the US.

yeah, we also have the brake booster on the other side, its gona be alot of work, but it can be done :ninja: but because I have a soft spot for superchargers, its'll be supercharger anyway
lol theres so much that you guys know :P I dont want a deisel, even though there were just under 100 imported deisel 200 series cars :wiggle: lol most of wich are probably dead now.
So dose know what parts are needed to fit in an 850, or dose anyone know about fitting an s80 engine in? I dont mind getting parts inported because I have canadian and american contacts... just not euripen :P

the audi TDI can be good can be bad. some i know of have run a looot of miles (redblock milage), and we had one that was blown up within 100K...

Very good milage and pretty good power, but noisy and a lot of turbo lag. gimme a D5 anytime ;-)
