remebered reading this one on one of the rally sites from somewhere in europe: they've an 142 rally car with steelies 14"x5 and they affirmed that they widened the wheel from the original width to 7".
so they ended up with a steelie 14x7, which looked very standard/cool imo.
so how did they do it? is this process available for steelies only?
thanks
*edit* the title should read: how does ONE... i'm fuktard!

you cut the wheel in half, add a section and then weld it up.
an alternative way is to imbue the wheel with magic to have it widen.

actually, i wonder if the procedure can be handled by a regular shop, or it needs to be done the '"industrial" way and only rally teams with $$$ can afford it?
hmm, i guess all i have to do is start calling places around and hopefully find out smth positive... I'll let you know
i'll start with the shops that work on bent rims

The latter is the more suitable option...

I've got a quote for $150 per wheel. Not sure if this was for aluminum or steel.

Cutting the actual wheel rim in half and widening it is known as "banding" Generally it is frowned upon as there have over the years been some really nasty accidents with badly banded rims coming apart. Welding a narrow strip of metal into the wheel rim can set up some really weird stresses. Personally I wouldn't recommend it.
It is far better to get a competent wheel specialist to take the wheel centre of of a rim, and weld it into a wider one piece rim core. Even then I'd only have it done by a properly equipped shop, not some back street cowboy.

steel rims are very seldom "banded" together to make them wider...usually a new outer shell is welded to your center section:

^This is what Amar is refering to. I believe it's pretty common across the pond.

^ Here's the cut face and weld to wider rim method. Which seems to be to proper way to do it 'round here.
