'83 244t, whose main function is storage for parts these days:

So, she needs LOTSA work but that's no biggie, 'cause I know she'll totally satisfy my expectations after the work is finished!

The long story made short on the car : this guy started fixing it (had seized motor due to massive oil loss from a cracked oil return pipe), but an unhappy event occured in his family , so he decide to let the car go.

The car was in the shop for some time (about 6mths) before it was put in storage, so that explains the dust and the spare parts laying on the top of the trunk. After approx. 1yr of storage time, it landed into my arms fro $650, which i think is a great price.

I decided to start working on the interior first, just because I haven't decided yet on the type of fi I want to run on the B21FT (see edit).

The master plan calls for keeping the B21FT, but I would very much like to run a different fi system. As of right now, I'm planning for LH 2.2, mainly because of the better fuel mileage when compared to the K-Jet (although, a very reliable and easy to maintain fi system imo this K-Jet).
Definitely, no MSing for me, I'm a die-hard Bosch fan!

*edit* Sep 11th, 2007 - new developments
It's been decided: I'll stay with the KJet for two reasons:
(1) I sourced a parts car '85 245 (initially, I was going to get just the IC and the freq valve so I can transfer them on my car), but I struck a very good deal with the jy owner (600USD for the package), so I'm the owner of salvage titled turbowagon with 118K miles original and a free moving engine and watercooled (aftermarket kit)turbo (from what I can tell by rotating the engine by hand, has ok compression too)
(2) I'd rather mess with fuel pressures than electronics when something goes wrong with the car. ("Minimal" # of electronic components Ok!)
One goal I would like to achieve thru this project is a better low-end response than in the standard variant for quick getaway speeds. So I'm heading towards a more torque in the lower rpm band approach with my powerplant buildup.

I'm thinking also of changing the color, but I'm 50/50 on the subject as of right now.

Gotta move and start ripping the interior apart for cleaning&restoration. Catch you later!

She'll get the e-codes roundies (studying also the possibility of upgrading to HIDs) with H4 , together with a flat hood (got all the hardware already)

*edit*

One very important thing which reflects directly on this project: I'm rebounding from a divorce and my finances aren't so great at this time. For now, this project is intended as a resto project on a budget. If this car would've shown up in my life couple of years ago... Oh well, it's never too late to own an 240turbo! They're gettin' kinda rare, aren't they?

I hope that I'll be financially Ok next year and be able to continue the 2nd phase of this project, which is a GroupA powerplant replica buildup, so I can finally proudly display the 300+ badge under my username!
I think I already located an '75 450 MB for the fuel distributor!

sorry bud, roundies it is! But they're e-codes nonetheless.

about the tranny: i'd rather install a short-throw shifter like in 1800s than an M46. That 1/2mi travelling distance between 1st and 2nd isn't at all appealing to me.

I decided on a color for the interior: desert tan.
I ripped off the interior and I discovered some rust I'll need to take care of before anyting else.

You've never driven a car with a GOOD shifter in it if you think the M46 has a short throw :)

Yeah, I was in an 1800 last night with an M41 (OD switch on dash) and I thought to myself: "this is very nice!" :)
However, the bellhousing design might be aproblem if I want to fit an M41 in 244. Still researching if there was an M41 offered in early years. I'm hoping so, since some of the '75 200s had B20s in them.
One other thing I'm trying to figure out is if M410s were short throws.
HELP?

M410 shifters (minus one insignificant detail) are exactly the same as M41 shifters. IMO, pre-69 shifters are better than post-69. i have the original M41 shifter bolted to the M410 now in my '67. i love it. superfast shifts. yes, after driving this, the M46 shifter is long throw and sloppy.

retrofitting an M410 to a slanted B230FT might not be worth the effort, though, considering their scarcity. you might be better off going the T5 route if you want a nice-shifting trans and a 1st gear ratio that's <4something :yikes:

for god's sake, don't use an M41.

Thanks, never seen too many 410s anyway. Once maybe in an 164 in the jy.
Any idea if the '75 200s with B20 had M41? I know of one with a B20 in the jy, but this one has an B35 I think (3-spd slushyboxy)?
That would be awesome!

Actually, what I'll be looking at in the following days is an '75 244 with M45.
I like the idea of not having to worry if the OD works or not...
In order to keep everything in balance, if I decide togo with the M 45, I'll have to snatch the rear-end as well. However, I'll check the rear-end ratio first.
I'm considering taking the route of using a different rear end to achieve my goal of quick 0-60 times and leaving the powerplant unaltered. (mpg @fwy speeds no object).
I'll say the odds are in the favor of finding an 4.10 in that car.

Also, I'll be studying the possibility of using the front pwrseats from an '87 Audi 5000 --awesome ride in those seats!

with the interior gutted, it's the best time to run the wiring for the audio system

Cool! More work.....

Well, advanced a bit today: fitted the roundies, tried to fit an 850 seat in and re_painted the interior, which soon will go back inside the body (this friday I hope).

Next I'll work on the the very few rust issues she has.

Then, the fun begins: getting everything back together in the engine bay (starting next week(stage zero is completed; it will only be fitted with an ic as a 1st mod- small steps better than none!)

I also decided I'll stay with KJet: fewer mpg than an LH system is an ok price to pay for the simplicity of diagnose and repair which usually describes a KJet system. And it will stay AW because I might move (or at least drive there very often) in a place with serious traffic problems/jams: Chicago.

all the best

Because I don't have lots of time on my hands right now, plus the loaner car I'm presently driving will expire at the end of this month, I'll have to put my "brownie" on the road asap.
Fall season is here, so my first priority is to get the rust work done as quickly as I can before the colder temperatures move in.

So, because of the time limitations, she'll get just an IC for now.

I located some velour seats in great shape (I hate leather !) and got me couple of door panels (two front ones are rotten due to water infiltration).
However, the door panels are from a car with manual crank, so I'm thinking of adding a small interior lamp in the hole left from crank.

Finished painting the interior (carpets, seats and other interior triming)
I'm on the prowl for a dashboard to fix, which will replace the disgustingly cracked present dash.

Also, I made me an adaptor for dash so I can install a CD player with mp3 hookup.

Pics to follow soon

I decided on a hue for car: I want it yellow. Thus, the color of the interior will be black
Started repainting everything now! Oh joy! :)

Well, project is dead!
The senior promised the car to a new driver in the family and the son didn't know about it when he sold me the car.
Since the son is a buddy of mine and helped me many times when I was in dire straits, I returned the title without fussing and I got a refund , so it's all good.
I'll be back soon with a different project car!
