I would suppose it would depend on what power point you are looking at. These levels, yeah, probably cheaper to go whiteblock. (but to make it at all trust-worthy, its going to be expensive no matter what you run) 12s-13s, you could probably get there for about the same in either engine.

Yup. A set of rods and you're way past what all but the most insane redblock will produce. Heck even without them. Volvo has already built a ton of them and they keep getting cheaper.
I'm kinda suprised I haven't seen more talk of T4 motors. The s40 motors are dirt cheap these days. Plus 4 rods and making a manifold for a 4 banger is about as hard as making a cup of coffee and a bowl of rice crispies at the same time.
All aluminum 16v 2.0 in a 140... Um... yeah... I think so...
That'd be a reliable 400hp for about 3 grand.

Doug, your car doesn't have to run 10s like that but a 12.84 would take the tbricks record....
450hp and traction should do it.. Don't be afraid of breaking it, that's how the dirty south does it and it still gets it done. Now go on and show us some nuts and show us what fwd can do.

Don't whiteblocks have issues at higher power levels with their blocks? I guess adding concrete to it wouldn't be expensive, but sleeving it? Or whatever they do?
If you just add rods to a 5cyl whiteblock, you can make about how much power before something else breaks? Ok, 4 cyl redblock, add rods, and then you can make the same amount of power pretty much, bottom end wise, no? Or are you saying the cost for redblocks comes when you factor in the part where an 8v head doesn't flow nearly as well as a whiteblock's head does?

did you not see that exhaust housing
mike is def spot on that thing is spooling slowww, but its also helping w/ traction big time
that was one thing i was wondering about if he went to a smaller hot side and that thing spooled quicker would be be breaking into 9's or just loosing traction...
the problems w/ blocks in the Whites happen arround 700hp apparently, for some reason i don't see that being an issue here for a while...

You can make a T5 go to 700hp 100x easier than any redblock. You buy a B230FT and have it make 400whp @ 18psi with factory cams, head, exhaust manifold, intake, throttle body and pistons and it'll be a different story.
Whiteblocks > Red.

Still easier in a white and more reliable. No 16v stuff to make, no headers required ect. You still need a transmission behind either motor so thats a moot point as well as a decent diff.

I've been talking about them for about 4 years now. There are probably more 400whp S40's rolling around europe than 850's. I've posted videos of Atech s40's going to 9500 rpm too :oogle: Thats whats going in the 1800 for sure. Actually.. Im building one for a customer towards end of the year :-D

Well then... F building a redblock! Except for a nice NA B20 for my eventual DD 145...
But wait... An S40 motor would be cheaper, and twice as fast. Hmmm. Damnit, I like NA power sometimes.
Doug, you're just trying to make me have a bunch of Volvos when I grow up, of all sorts of builds... :-P
Can the S60R exhaust manifold flow for 400whp? I guess it isn't THAT much more than what it's already being asked to flow. And the guy on here with the black, super sweet S60R destroyed his bottom end around 400 something whp, didn't he? I suppose that was due to a bad tune?

Sorta, the 2.5L S60R blocks are actually weaker in the walls (imo) than the older 2.3L T5 blocks. Honestly, If I was going to push past 650whp I'd use the D5 block.
The S60R manifold is fine if you port it out for 500whp.

With 7250 rev-limit I could go to 105-106 or so...
With stock rev-limit and stock sized tires on Titans I was shifting into 4th in the 1/4 mile when I had the 19T.
I would guess 9000+ on this engine.. Possibly also M56L with a lower final drive than 4:1?

Seems to me that 700+bhp and granny shifting is faster than 250bhp and shifting like a real man...y'know...the sort of guy who can break an M46 just by looking at it
Re: Gearing...check the diameter of those wheels too...they're huge vs stock!
Whiteblock totally > redblock. I've been thinking it for a while, in fact, and bugging the UK guys on the subject.
I'm putting a 'daily-driver' spec redblock (97 B230FK, 18T/19T or posssssibly a GT28xx) in the 360 simply because I want to build a 'period' piece, but if you want more power than an I5 whiteblock can safely make on stock internals (350 crank?), it's a damn sight cheaper for the average enthusiast to fit a built T5 to a RWD brick than it is to get a redblock to make that kinda power.
300-350 on a redblock isn't too hard (i.e. easier and cheaper than swapping a whiteblock), but the number of cars on this board making more kinda illustrates that the next step up is tricky. Given the MPG gains, I'd go whiteblock at this point, unless I specifically wanted a redblock for some reason.
cheers
James
