View Full Version : Remember the real Orlando meets? This is a call for you to attend October 19-21

Let's have one of those again. I'm talking a real, full blown Turbobricks style meet, right in Orlando. Last time we left off with those, we were at 10.0. Remember these guys?
http://www.pbase.com/volvoisaac/image/49834585/large.jpg
Let's call this 11.0. It's about time we had another one. It's been damn near a year, the protracted dearth of which has been rendered only worse by a few attempted pathetic facsimiles of the real deal.
That said, I'm putting out a call to get the original VFBG back together. It's about damn time I saw a few guys again who've been MIA for months or years. Kyle, Cody, Mike, Steve, Jordan, you've been in hiding for a while. I want the weirdos to come out of their caves too. I want to finally meet and maybe have a fight to the death with Terrance. I want to barbecue meat and drink beer.
It'll be centered around a house, a weekend, a drag strip, a shop, and maybe even a dyno day. Barring inevitability, there will be at least one very fast redblock powered Volvo there. It'll be worth checking out.
I'm guessing this can happen sometime late this month or maybe even October. We can nail down a date when people make their availability known.
So who's down?
Alrighty gentlemen. This **** is going down based out of our pad. Plenty of parking (which has been an issue in the past for OM's) on the street and theres no neighborhood association to worry about. We've got plenty floorspace for sleeping bags and a decently sized garage. As for bathroom/shower use; be respectful, bring your own crap, don't make a mess.
Plan on showing up to my place on the 19th. Anytime this day will be good, but afternoon is better cause I have a class at 11:00 (that I'm going to probably end up skipping). We typically leave for the track around 5:00. My roommate has an air compressor and airtools, but be aware that you may need to wait in line, so try and have your **** ready to go before you get here. We have an AAP and Zone very close to us if you need parts or oil (EricF).

5329 Cypress Drive
Winter Park, FL 32792
OK, The driveway doesn't hold more than a few cars, so everyone will have to park along the street. No neighborhood drifting please; theres kids around, neighbors get pissed, and theres cops everywhere. Oh, and the street directly in front of my house is reserved for my roommates (they're putting up w/ this ****).
Website for the strip: http://www.speedworlddragway.com/
OK, for drag racing, they're starting to become more picky. Last time I went, you had to be wearing long pants to run or ride along, so plan accordingly.
Afterwards, the usual shenanigans will ensue at my place. No real plans, we'll just do whatever.
Saturday morning will likely start with breakfast at Denny's or something. LKQ run is definitely possible, as well as dyno time. Were still working on details for Saturday. I'm going to find out about CFL Turbo for some dyno time. From what I hear, they're cheap for dyno runs, but you don't want them tuning your stuff. They're rather famous for blowing up engines. Saturday night will probably include going downtown. We'll just play it by ear.
Sunday, you freeloaders need to be outta here!
Things you need to bring:
Sleeping bag/pillow
Toiletries
Money for food
Money for gas
Spare parts (whatever you're going to break)

I will arrive, and in style.
There will be wondrous foods and beers the likes of which have not been witnessed since the last Orlando meet. I will have two cars, maybe one running. One by-stander may drive one of said cars, maybe.
The usual hooligans will be called forth, and though none of them has a Neon any longer, hooliganism will still be at all-time highs.
The track will be devastated, and the rivers will run red... With.. Wine...

Definitely down! I think I missed the last "real" meat due to my car being killed that night. The 245 has been pretty good lately, and will probably be getting a fresh coat of wax this weekend. October is good, anytime is good for me except the night of the 12th. The more notice the better so I can have arrangements made for the kids. The wife will probably want to tag along for this, as she was the reason I went to Orlando last time in the gas guzzling 745. If there's anything I can do to help out with things, I'd be more than happy.

and of course i'll pitch in on fancy beer and bbq goods ...

night on the town is in order, i can facilitate that too ...

I'll check to see how the 21st works for me. At this point, I have no idea, but it helps to push the meet back to help build it to epic proportions. Having a DJ would be badass.
As would having it at Nick's house, were he to convince Andres and the new roommate about it. The house is definitely well sized for house parties, has a garage with full power tools, and the driveway is good to hold upward of 8 Volvos, plus the street.

Oh come on girls, no need to cry. One day Sylvanna and I will appear. On that that day, a light mist will hug the ground and cool air will brush against your napes. The sky will shine with a brilliance before unseen, things will bloom and women will coo with satisfaction. All this and more merely from the roaring of Sylvanna's engine.
Until then, keep doing what you're doing you're doing. You're all doing just fine BTW.
As for me, I've BT & DT scene so don't be upset that I'm not soiling my shorts with excitement. And what do you expect from a guy that's "pushing 40" (as if it's a bad thing Ike?) with 20+ years of road trips in cars / on motorcycles, organizing events for a motorcycle club that had the blessing and protection of the Red and White (!) on the West Coast, rallys from Cabo to Vancouver, track days and schools, rides, drunken wheelie contests, and mods, speed runs with mates along the coast south of SF, 800K burnouts on 4 different bikes, 2 head on collisions with cars, very un-official "timed" runs between two cities that will go unnamed, hangin' out with the Yoshimura Superbike team of the late '80's, ad infinitum......
That said, I'd like to go, but what are guys going to be doing that I haven't allready? :e-shrug:
So once again, sorry, but I've got plans almost every weekend before here and the end of the year. And far too much to do between M-F besides. I think they call it having a life.

Things
Idea is to meet face to face with those whom you spend so much time around online. It's not some quintessential track day or parking lot meet with hundreds of waxed and polished rides which have plaques in front of them or mirrors on the underside of the hood. It's a more familial atmosphere where people are encouraged to bring their cooky running projects that everyone else may scoff at to meet with like minds and gather input, support and encouragement from the few people who can appreciate exactly what they have put into their cars.
In addition to cooking fine foods, drinking great beers, trading most excellent stories in a very laid back setting sometimes in the foreground of said project cars which are at times actively being worked upon by their owners and friends alike, and generally just being around cool people who understand you and your car and doing fun things for an entire weekend.
Good turbobricks meets are made by the downtime, the parties, the eating and drinking, dynos, shows, drives, etc only bring heads to populate these in-between times. Dyno and track days are nothing without the connections and friendships that the meets produce.
(also I am the bomb at cooking fish among other things, and probably will be cheffing the meet possibly with Mr. Andres...)
A good turbobricks meet is something everyone passionate about a Volvo project should experience.

By that he means you have an awfully tight schedule for a dude who changes jobs every four months.
By that he means you have an awfully tight schedule for a dude who changes jobs every four months.
If you had half the intelligence and awareness of things as you proclaim, you'd know that IT can be rather treacherous. Throw in a little drama from my f'ed up wife and pehaps one may not be so quick to judge a situation they have no knowledge.
Or are you just upset about my diatribe?
...shizzle...
Eric, you don't even have to explain those things to me. My house in Santa Cruz used to be host to our regular "every 6 weeks" grub sessions that would see 40+ club members over, just hangin' out, food for days, and general wam-and-fuzziness. We were freinds and we spent time together. I promoted that sense of community amongst us and did everything I could to continue. That's way that club now has at least two chapters and over 300 members in Central Coast California now (San Francisco - Santa Cruz) and sister clubs as far north as Vancouver (Grimly Fiendish Scooter Club).
But evenstill, it has nothing to do with what you guys are or are not going to do.
That said, my rant was about that little bundle of nerves Ika that seems rather strangely upset when people don't show up to his planned get togethers.
1) I don't EXPECT my freinds to do anything. I want them to kick it with me because they WANT to kick it with me. Not because they're guilted or e-coerced into it.
2) If they can't, that's fine. I've found that they're more willing to want to make it the next time around if my response is understanding and accomodating.
3) In spite of my freinds / associates troubles, I hold them in high regard! That said, if they can't make it to something I planned, I'm not going to begin a childish campaign to call names and get in jabs here or there.
Try to read everything I said in there. There are a couple of things I wrote that are worthy of mention.
1) I wish I could go
2) Enjoy your weekend
Should'nt those two things really be the most important?
If they're not, then is there some internet pride male sh1t going on here? If that's the case, you can be leader of the Florida Pack Issacc. It really doesn't matter to me. I wasn't after it anyways.
OTOH, if you (Ika) want to match credentials of who's been where / done what / with whom / on what, I garuantee my list will be longer then yours. You're a puppy! Don't bark up the wrong tree!
I've been listening to your little jabs for aeons now and have just let them go. After this thread, I'll continue to do so. But for now, I'm going to call you out to grow up. This just might be a good time to stop being so full of yourself. ;-)

Should be prepping cars for the track Friday (the 19th?), running at the track Friday (tech in starts at 6, runs start at 7), probably eat somewhere after that. Saturday is either dyno and/or BBQ, followed by possibly hitting up the downtown corner meet depending on what people want to do and who's been drinking and what-not.
Saturday night will likely be the big partyish type thing, chockload of tomfoolery.
Sunday will be nice greasy hungover breakfast somewhere, fixing cars so they will make the rides home ("fixing cars so they will ______" is generally a common theme throughout the meet), and anything else.
It's usually a pretty busy weekend, but there are a few options at the times that aren't the track which we can choose from. There are excellent places to take pictures, but the "picture drive" has never really been a theme at Orlando meets of the past.
I don't know what I was thinking when I said the weekend of the 21st by the way, that makes no sense. We will have a concrete date very soon, stay tuned. Oct 19-21 is the leanings but I wouldn't quit your job to get that weekend off just yet.
GA folkers I'd say are encouraged to come, but I'm not hosting the meet this time (barring any "uh please don't come" posts, I think that's probably the general sentiment here).

Dude, you can't just "not make it" to a meet that's 5 minutes from your damn house. If you really want to make it to the meet, you'll brave the 2 mile commute.
Two or three times that I drove 500 miles to the SE meets I was working 3-4 jobs simultaneously and going to school full time.
Turbobricks meets are about having a good time doing turbobricks stuff. If turbobricks stuff isn't your idea of a good time, then don't bother showing up. I know it'll be well worth it though.

Open downpipe is no problem. I just request that nobody romp in the neighborhood. Dont park in front of someone's driveway. Park facing the correct direction on the street (almost had my wagon towed for it pointing the wrong way). If we need to, we'll spread the cars out some... theres plenty of side streets to leave cars on if it comes down to it.
There will only be problems if someone is stupid enough to cause them.

Should be running with another couple of hours, but those hours will have to be delayed for a week or two.

I think we're going to start collective mass work (i.e. serious sawzalling, painting, welding, etc) on the secret blue 245 on Thursday if you can get that day off too...
And yeah, the 531 went on the 242 with a B cam and the B21F (should be around 9-9.1:1 CR?), mech distributor still, R injectors and GT2871... Should be very amusing while the transmission is still together (think 25-30 psi and lots of timing and octane).

Finally got it back together all the way and started it, pissing oil out of its ass... have the tranny dropped now, going to grey RTV the hell out of the gasket around the rear main housing and see how the rear main is seated, clean everything off well with brake cleaner and put it back together. It may make it... Last night though that was at like 2+ a.m. so didn't think I was going to bother fixing it.
My time to work on the car between now and the meet is practically zero... May have to re-think my plans of painting it the Thurs before.
