I have been doing lots of reading on LSDs for the Volvos, and it seems I need a Dana 30. Though every once in awhile I hear there are two diferent rear ends in these cars.
Mine is a 1990 240DL (245) automatic. This is more of a 'feeler'. I'm not ready to buy yet, but WILL be getting one in the future. While this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Detroit-Truetrac-Locker-Jeep-Dana-30-44-Limited-Slip_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33731QQihZ009QQite mZ190152101252QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) 'locker' fit? I would no be using the gears, the stock gears are fine for what I need. Can I just pull the stock ring gear off and press it on a Dana 30 unit meant for a Jeep? Thanks. Tom

the diff is dana 30 but your hearing about 1030 and 1031 axles which both use that diff.

So if I buy a similar (Dana 30) third member, then all I might need are, carrier bearings and shims to correct the back lash, if its out? And I don't have to worry about, 1030/1031, or anything? What are the differences between the 1030 and 1031 axles?
:drama:
I need to learn this stuff so don't mind me. Chat on!

The 240 series used two Volvo axle types the 1030 and the 1031. The 1031 is the heavier duty version with a larger ring and pinion. By the mid 80s pretty much all the cars sent to the US had the heavier duty 1031. The carrier or differential is Dana 30 compatible but the rest of the rear axle is Volvos parts. I'm using the true track 314 for many miles now and that unit has been replaced with a stronger 588 version. Those are the last three digits of the part number. I would get a true track unit again. I like it very much for street performance use.
There have been a few threads about this you can check out.
PS For the 86 and newer cars that have an electronic speedometer. You are going to have to machine the unit and have the tone ring mounted on the lsd.

What type of machining is going to be needed? I have a 1990. Are most machine shops able to make the mod to the carrier?

My understanding is you have to turn the body of the carrier down a bit to fit the tone ring on it. I think there might be pictures in threads from Mtowery.

search for a site called davebarton or something like that...if u search my name I have a thread about rear ends with a link to his site....he tells you exactly what to do with pictures and all. even has a unique way to fix the tone ring. quick question..are there any aftermarket lsd units that fit the volvo 1041 rear? I know it has an eaton locker...but its torn to shreds...

There are Vadis parts drawings by year with and without LSD. You will see that model year 84-90 is the older style diff (used on 200/700 all models), 91-93 newer design LSD (240 only) and in '93 a different LSD design used on 91-up 700/900 cars was shared with 240's.
