Well, if you want to do a head gasket we should do the meet at your house. That way if there are any broken exhaust studs you are already home and can repair those problems and put the car together a day or so later. Start soaking the exhaust manifold nuts and other fasteners with PB blaster a day or three before you do it. Make sure you have a head gasket set so if there are more than one broken stud. You pull the head to make it easier to repair them.

Why don't we meet at Englishtown again? That was fun.

I'd be happy to host a meet at my house as well but only have street parking. We have the best cheese steaks from Gaetanos if you like them. I also have a BBQ so we could grill some food as well.

This is an idea I've been pondering for a while, so....I emailed Ikea's corporate offices and requested permission for the use of a small portion of thier parking garage for an informal meet(Conshohocken, Pa). There's probably not a good chance it'll be granted, but it doesn't hurt to ask. But if they DO let us do it, it would be a sweet place for a late Winter meet.:)

I recieved a return call from Ikea's regional PR rep this morning.....not only do they want to do it, they're actually enthusiastic about the idea!! Her own words were "This should be a lot of fun!". She asked if we had a prefered store location. I told her we'd be flexible, but I'd prefer the use of the Conshohocken parking garage if I was to be assembling this meet. But I did also express that use of a NJ store location could be feasible. She asked to meet with me, in person, sometime next week to discuss the particulars. I agreed, but I had to schedual the meeting for week of Feb.11th...I'll be away on vacation all next week.

Thanx, billy780. Like I said, my meeting with them isn't until Feb.11th. Once Ikea & I get everything ironed out and agree on a date I'll be sure to start a new post topic here.

And just for the record, I'm still up for a NJ meet if someone puts it together. This local (SEPA) Ikea thing is just my way of being proactive. Besides, if we can successfully pull this off in Conshohocken, there's no telling what Ikea may be willing to do for us in other locations.

Dude, I'm game. This is sweet! I just stumbled upon this thread. My family loves Ikea, too. What a great excuse to go do stuff with cars!

And speaking of Jersey meets... I could probably put together a meet around here in South Jersey. Maybe the Holman Motorcars parking lot in Mays Landing?

I gotta keep checking in on this, this is awesome!

drinking940s...I realize that the general idea behind this topic was a NJ meet. I'm completely willing to attend such a meet as soon as a NJ local person(s) is ready to put it together. This whole Ikea thing was something I was mulling over for a while prior to emailing them. And since I live in the Philly burbs, it only makes sense that I put something together geographically close to me...after all, its my neighborhood. I can assure you that I'll start a completely NEW post topic once everything is finalized a few weeks from now.
And on a related matter, I can't tell you how many times I've spent hours on the road to go to a GtG at some mall somewhere only to be evicted by mall security after only being there for an hour. Sorry, that just plain sucks. The whole point is, that we(or rather "I") approach this the correct way by getting permission for us to gather. It's my hope that once we pull this off in PA, a store in NJ could possibly be the next location. But in order for that to happen, someone else in NJ is gonna hafta talk to thier PR rep & set it up.

And as far as the 90% of meets being in PA...You can thank the Volvospeed/York crew for most of those. Don't get me wrong, thier meets are fine...but they usually lack in RWD. And FWIW...I've never thought that anyone from NY/NJ was "lazy" for not trekin' down here. If anything, I'd say that PA folks have been lazy(myself included)for not caravaning up there when there have been opportunities.

I'm ready to get this thing rollin'. I've been working on a basic format of how I'll be presenting this to Ikea. I'll be dressin' to impress and prepared to tell it like it iz.
Thanks for everyone's support so far! My primary concern at this point is...well, getting the official go-ahead(of coarse), and agreeing upon a date that will jive with them as well as us. There's also a possibility that they might request that the venue be changed to S.Phila.. I'll be pushing for Conshohocken and a mid-late March, Sunday date.

Here's da' skinny:

I think the meeting with Ikea went well. But, we still have NOT recieved an official go-ahead from Ikea.
Naturally, she had many questions about what our GtGs are all about. I gave her a general overview of the entire process(ie:open invitation on the forums, schedualling, gathering times, potential attendance). She did ask if there had been any other Ikea/Volvo gatherings in the past. I did mention the unauthorized NY Ikea GtG that occured without apparent incident. I mentioned how we've successfully gathered in the past at other various locations and, basically, how we're just a bunch of independent Volvo enthusiasts that like to gather from time-to-time to simply meet and discuss our common associations with our vehicles. She seemed OK with all of this.
She asked me how I believed Ikea could possibly benefit from this. I told her that many Ikea customers could easily make the connection between simplistic Swedish automobiles and the promotional philosophies of Ikea itself, thus promoting Ikea's Swedish pride. I also mentioned how a group of 20-30 Volvos in thier lot with the hoods open and people milling about would also draw curiosity from passers-by who would be welcome check them out for themselves and ask questions. There's also the family factor since several of you have also expressed your intent to bring along the 'Spouse & Kids' for a day of shopping. I believe all of this sat well with her.
She wanted to make sure that we would not be on Ikea's premises to sell anything...I assured her that we would not. I also told her that at no time would there be any type of negotiations for street racing or gambling of any kind(..one of her concerns as well).

So...here's what She has in mind: Once approved by Ikea's higher-ups, she would like to coincide our GtG with some sort of Ikea sales event at thier S. Phila. location. The tentantive dates she has in mind are Sunday, April 6th with a raindate of Sunday, April 13th. She would like our presence for 4 hours...from 11am until 3pm. She showed me the exact portion of the parking lot she would like us to be in, which was more than enough space, only 50yds from the main entrance, and well exposed to passing traffic(sorry, no parking garage in S.Phila...hence the raindate). Ikea is also willing to provide sign placards which would be displayed at the main entrance and at various locations to help direct participants to the correct area of the lot.
I explained to her that its in our best interest that such an event be successful, since we'd like this to just be the beginning of a series of Ikea/Volvo GtGs. She agreed and mentioned how there might be interest in doing this in other store locations.
We shook hands...exchanged pleasantries...meeting was over.

Oh, btw...I did pass along "www.turbobricks.com" to her, so that chance of Ikea reading all this text is highly likely.

Bill, great job man.

I can't wait to see this happening, like esunbaboon said, it would be great if this meet would turn into some annually.
Bill had mentioned that Ikea was a Swedish company? I think? So it would be good to get this merger between us and Ikea. It would get back to Sweden and could possibly become a promotional gathering for Ikea, or perhaps us gaining a few new members.

It just seems like an honest thing to do.

Gaining a connectoin with two things that are associated with Sweden would be something great to accomplish. Furthering Volvo's and Ikea's population both as maybe a different side of Volvo and/or a smarter, more family oriented store and company.

This is gonna be great.

good point....... Im sure if this is big enough, more people will look at volvo's in a different way.

it's almost as tho we are on the cutting edge of promoting another sub-culture. I know out here on long island my car & a select other volvos have made a profound impact on the racing culture.

Im not just saying that this board is all about going fast..... There are plenty of people who have made amazing looking bricks that deserve an award.

if this meet is a sucsess i would like to see if maybe we could make it into something bigger where people actually vote on our cars in categories. Just something to think about

sl8brick: im glad you took initiative on going to ask perrmission, and it makes the meet alot more organized and gives it a more serious feeling, i didnt meen any offence by asking why, i was really just wondering.

No offence taken at all. And your original perspective of "why go through the trouble" is quite natural, given the way things have been done in the past.

I'll be honest with all of you...I've never assembled a GtG before, but I've attended dozens of them through both Volvo & VW forums(my Wife drives a mildly modded Mk4 Golf) over the years. Some have been better than others, but I've experienced enough to learn from other's mistakes and I've finally reached the point where I feel confident enough to try one on my own. In doing so, I understand there are risks to be assumed and responsibilities to burden. This is why I remain adamant about approaching this the right way.

Thanx to all for the kind words. Just keep in mind, the steps I've taken so far are only preliminary and the possibility of a let-down is still a reality. If I don't hear back from Ikea by the end of the week, I'll be calling her on Monday to see if a decision has been reached.

hey bill listen....... if for some odd reason this does fail miserabley we could always just meet up @ a drag track in nj.... & watch the 2 greatest wagons from li duel it out on the strip. We have high hopes for the red sled. & black coal is looking to bust out a fat 13.999 or better from last years 14.375. which would be an improvement of over .376

mildly being the key word there...Nothing fancy, 2003 Golf GL 4dr 2.0ltr/auto...mostly OE euro-market trim accessories that I've pursuaded VWoA to import for me.

But if this Ikea thing goes through, she'll be driving my Mom's stock '07 S60T5 to the meet instead...gotta fill as many parking spaces as possible. ;-)

Hell yea....like I said before, I'm still up for a NJ meet if my schedual permits.

Oh, I almost forgot...apparently there's a Swedespeed meet in Allentown, Pa on Feb.24th. If we get the green light from Ikea, I'd might go and personally invite some of those Ford...err, umm..."S60R" drivers to join us.

I just got off the phone with Ikea:

The meet is a GO!!

However, since we're not officially a club they will not aknowledge a partnership between us for this event. But at least we don't have to worry about getting kicked out(unless, of coarse, someone does something really stupid).
I'm currently working on the particulars...once complete, look for the new topic/announcement here.

:spin: Good job! Thanks for putting this together. I start a new job, so I don't know my availability, but if I'm off, I'm driving down to Philly!
