I get this screwy angst this time of year - I think it's the end of summer preying on my mind. I tend to comfort myself with a new car (most of the twenty odd cars I've owned have been bought in October-November) or an expensive upgrade.
To that end, I've been merrily shopping for upgrade wheels for our 855T5.
This morning, it occurred to me that this is just a seasonal thing, and I really like the Columbia's just fine... they're just rashed and stained.
So, I bare my soul to my wife, and comment that I'll just powder coat the wheels a darker silver when we get new tires next year. She immediately says, "RED!!" I say: :uh: She says, "RED!!!"
Now of course there's no way I'm going to powdercoat something in such an oddball color without a preview. Enter a $4 can of spraypaint in safety red.
Whatcha think?

dude put the white lip on your rims... and you never know what a red pinstripe or your trip if you dare would like like... definitely a different more, extravagant way of changing the cosmetics of your Volvo.

Thanks for all the kind words, gang. I'm on the fence myself; it's silly, but kinda fun, and what's wrong with that?
We are considering a polished or silver lip when (and if) I powdercoat them. Also thought about the red midline trim, but I don't think that'd work; lots harder to change back too.
Personally, I think it needs some kind of graphic on the hood, in matching red. But that's way out there for suburban housewife.

awesome. How did you apply that paper around the edges? I've painted my wheels with tires on before and it took me hours to tape them, but that looks a bit simpler.
I love colours like that. If I were to do mine, I would paint them super bright green, not quite neon, but almost.
In fact, I even did a photochop of it

I think it looks pretty rockin'.
No more red though, it works great as an accent color but even the tail lights make it look too color coordinated, so too manny red parts could easily ruin it IMHO.

awesome. How did you apply that paper around the edges? I've painted my wheels with tires on before and it took me hours to tape them, but that looks a bit simpler.
I tear off pieces of masking tape about 1-2" long and slide it down between the tire and wheel. Go in one direction around the wheel, overlapping, so that tearing them off is quick & easy when you're done. Then I come back and tape strips of newspaper to the tape I've put down. Since the tape stays stuck down on the tire, it can be possible to paint part of the inner edge of the wheel (depending on tire size/style). If you stick paper down next to the edge of the wheel, it probably won't stay out of the way. I only worry about covering the sidewall. Any overspray that might hit the tread will get worn off quickly.

Tardcore's in the lead!! :omg:
Tying the taillights in was part of the plan - hence the super bright red color. It does need a little something else, but I think just about any accent is just going to look tacky; Nothing looks as ricey as offcolor accents on a plain jane car. Maybe a red pinstripe, like that Sentra has in blue.
Thanks again for all the input, nice to hear similar sickminded opinions.

Blue, with a swedish flag on the roof........
I like 'em red though, it ties in with the taillights (esp Volvo Wagon taillights) really well and because the wheels aren't super big, it doesn't look too ricey. And, if it makes the Missus happy, by all means, do it.
I'm all for a set of Porsche GT3 RS wheels and matching trim, but with 855 T5 or something else model related, in the Porsche script, with the shadow effect. I'm SURE the wifey would love to have something that custom to call her own. :P

Reminds me ALOT of the way that Porsche painted all the Early 70's RS 911's- think color coded fuchs, and color coded "carerra" vynil (or paint, I forget which) along the lower door sills. Google Porsche 911 RS and you'll see what I mean.
Either way, mucho mucho sexy.

I used to be crazy about painting the wheels on my old Saab years ago. Yea, I got more than a few crazy looks, but I guess that's what I wanted back then. These days I drive a 99 Dodge Caravan and nobody sees me, which I like. This is my first time posting here and I'm having trouble attaching a few shots of the 76 99EMS from way back in 1983. I think you guys will get a good laugh out of these. Any ideas on how to post a picture or two? Thanks
