View Full Version : d16 not flashing when used as spark output
hello all, i am trying to get my car up and running with my setup. here is the particulars:
v3.0 board
MSI
currently 029v firmware, but tried 029y4
60-2 wheel with VR sensor [wired correctly]
i followed the instructions on the extra site for wasted spark with D14 and D16 used as spark outputs for the vb921s [two of them]. and am using the 'wasted spark for your brick' by 740atl as my setttings.
D14 flashes correctly, and i get spark on that side of my EDIS coil.
D16 does NOT flash, but i have seen it lit up acouple of times so i know it works. i also checked to make sure that the three LED circuits are the same, and they are.
could it be my VR sensor / wheel decoding settings are not correct? or ??? i've tried both the current version, and the 029v with the same results.
help!

both wired up the same way? what mannor of wiring did you employ?
i followed the instructions on the extra site for the driver wiring...
top of R27 >> 330ohm resistor >> board
top of R29 >> 330ohm resistor >> additional vb921 pin 1
i dont think it is the wiring to the drivers, even with the wiring disconnected to the drivers only D14 lights up when i crank the engine over.
can someone email me a working MSQ? please, with sugar? my email is jaodesign at yahoo

oh the msq. Make sure you have defined a spark output B and that its set to that LED. This will be under general code options.
yep spark output B is set in the codebase and output options screen.
if i set the spark to inverted, both the lights are lit up constant until i crank over the engine. while i am cranking, D14 blinks while D16 doesn't blink at all.
i've tried a bunch of different configurations, i started with the settings and sets on the wasted spark thread multiple times with 2 different processors, and 029y4 and 029v firmwares...

cold solder joint maybe? did you define two seperate spark events?

reheated all points on the board, everything looks ok.
where do you define two seperate spark events?

same place you set up your trigger wheel. You have trigger position A, trigger return A, then trigger position B and trigger return B. For wasted spark you don't need anything else.

yep, the trigger return B settings that 740atl used in the wasted spark writeup. maybe i am just no seeing the pulse... or its not turning fast enough to do the second one...
i installed a MS-II processor and setup it up. it has a test mode for coils and injectors. by using the test mode, all three LEDs light up and pulse with the test mode. but i cannot see D14 flashing when i crank it over.

mm mine i can usually only see at night anyway. do you get spark from that set of coils whilst cranking?
thanks for the replies kenny
i used a timing light with the trigger tapped down... i dont see any flashes on it, but i do for the other side [D14].
so to recap:
D14 flashes & verified output with timing light[damn good spark BTW]
D16 does not flash when cranking, LED works when tested, no spark.
JFSAGiggles i am going to swap to triggers so i can see if the other side of the coil works also.

jew got mail.
got the msq and switched over to HRes, doesn't seem to flash the problem LED, but the other one seems to alittle more stable.
since i been messing with this crap i was thinkin' ... why can't they swap the 10turn R52 & R56 for a digital pots? maybe not enough precision? then it could be adjusted via software...
BTW cranking RPMs are somewhere like 260-290.
ohhhhh ****
gotta little sputter of life out of it just now
3 weeks straight working on it, sun up to way after sun down, and this is the first time in a week or so that that i felt like i am getting somewhere. both coils are firing now, either something in your MSQ fixed it, or i just couldn't see it before.
it wants to start, but popped a couple of times out the hole in the intake for the idle motor. no i haven't plugged it yet. i've got other crap to take care of... like getting an alternator somewhere in there
kenny i noticed that your crank settings are alittle different then 740atls...
i set my flywheel up like he says in the write up, should i be useing his settings instead?
on a uhoh note... its turning over faster now... and i have my fingers crossed that one of the times i was turning it over the valves didnt hit

my settings work, his settings work, its all relative. since you're defining the 'window' size for the trigger event (trigger position and trigger return) you can pretty much set things up however you want.
did you load the correct version of firmware on the controller before loading my map? you'll need to have approx 550cc injectors @ 3bar to stand a chance of it running. smaller injectors, up the req fuel.

hah wait'll you pump the lifters up and they hold the valves open a tick. Its about the worst feeling in the world having the car crank up on one cylinder (cept that it then usually settles down and runs on all 4 almost immediately, but you get that "oh ****" feeling for a second)
