View Full Version : Is this the place for a sound system question?

Hey all,

So, if this isn't the place, let me know and I'll repost.

Have any 940/960 owners put speakers on the rear deck? I was thinking of putting a pair of 6x9s back there to give myself some low end, and better seperation, but am unsure on how to position them. I'm thinking of either putting them in boxes, or setting them(nicely) into the deck, so they point upwards.

Any opinions?

Oh, and this is in a '92 940T. It's got the stock 6 speaker system, cassette deck & cd changer in the trunk.

If there's room to put the 6x9's IN the rear deck, do that. It's really MICKEY MOUSE seeing two BOXES sitting on top of the rear shelf. Being recessed in the rear deck, the highs and mids reflect off the back window. Stereo separation is NOT what one wants for good sound. What you want is sound that sounds like it's coming from the WHOLE back window. Unfortunately, the better more expensive decks have good circuitry to do so..If budget allows, go with a good sub and enclosure in the trunk...
Good Luck,
Ron

The 940 / 960 sedans are already designed for fitting speakers on the rear deck, and even has appropriate mounting holes pre-drilled as well as templates marked on the back of the rear deck board showing you where to cut. My '90 740 did and fitting rear deck speakers was a breeze. Here is the Volvo genuine rear deck speaker for your car, you can consider it for a more genuine setup, or at least hide your speakers under a genuine Volvo speaker grille.

Two245Turbos: Yeah, I know. I had it like that in my 760, and wasn't that fond of it. The main thing I was wondering was if the sound would in fact reflect, so thanks for answering that.

V-Jet: Wow, thanks! I see they're calling it a 5x9, so I'm assuming a 6x9 will go. Now just to find those grills...

8 ohm impedance on those "5x9"'s????? Why so high? I thought the standard for automotive drivers was 4 ohms. Unless Volvo is using some kind of high quality MOSFET system that puts a nice low THD at higher impedances?
