I need help deciding what kind of tires to get for the GLE.
Stock 14's, 185/70/14
A. White letter tires?
B. Solid Whitewall tires?
C. Blackwall tires?
D. Another size 195/70/14?
And NO. Slapping on a set of Polaris rims and fresh Falken 225/45/zr17's isn't an option! :-P

185-70-14 is small
195-70-14 is the best all around size for the later cars with tall rear ends.
195-75-14 would be OK for freeway mileage

I think the 195/75 would be too tall looking...
So 195/70/14 probably plain blackwall would look best then?

And tall around town for the 195-75's
I had an 86 245 DL M 46 with 331's and the 195-70-14's
were just right,good freeway economy.
I could accelerate, and hold 4th & OD around town and on the boulevards.
Blackwalls look right on Euro cars, unless they are tweaked out.:wtf:

Any junkyards around there where you can get ANY other set of Volvo wheels? Almost any other style would be an upgrade ...
Anyways, my vote is for blackwalls.

I've had my eyes open for a cheap upgrade of steelie 15's with nice volvo hubcaps but nothings come up around here.

imo...just get normal blackwall tires. i'd go either 185/70 or 195/70. i have 185/70 on my 242, dad has 195/70 on the 245. both seem fine. dad did have 197/75 but did not like it at all...too tall and too much roll when turning

I was just about to ask, since i came over from VWs how would 195/60/14s work?

White wall is for older classic cars with smooth lines. Not 744s that were designed with a straight edge ruler. I only think white letters look good on Volvos if they have black wheels. Therefore I suggest black wall.

195/60/14 tire? Seems like an extremely rare size... that might be too wide... Might give it that "wandering" feel.

Those are actually cast aluminum wheels?? But not hub caps! Just the center cap that goes over the lugs.

just buy replacement tires the same size so your speedo isn't off... I swear, you won't notice much of a difference! Just make sure you get good tires...

Try this. This wouldn't cost a fortune and make a big statement.
Stocky bolt-ons and 4WD look gone...

+1. Look for some other Volvo rims....at LEAST 15". That would greatly improve the looks of the car. If thats really not in your budget though, I'd just stick with the stock tire size, but make sure you get good tires. Not some cheap bullshizzle.

195/60/14 tire? Seems like an extremely SMALL size... that might be too PUNY... Might give it that "GAS SUCKING" feel.

That is a wheel. I can get you a set for cheap if you want some. You could also go with something like

However they are from my 90 740T and they will be going back on it it the Spring. I don't have the extra money for another set of those. And I also have a 91 740 which is basicly a drivable parts car with 15 inch steelies with great tires but the 14's on my 88 will not clear the front brakes on the 91 so I cant swap them. :(

Thanks for all these suggestions guys.
Bottom line is I don't think I will buying another set of wheels for this car. I'll stick with the 14' wheels and just get a decent tire. I just dont have the funds to get another set of rims and especially to pay to get them shipped.
Ideally what I would like to do is swap the 15' steelies from my 91 but as I said I cant get the 14's to fit on the front. And I drive all 3 so I'm kinda stuck with what I got. Or is there anyway for me to make the 14's fit on the 91?

What year is you're GLE? I think it is from before ABS was standard, because then they went to 15's. I have an 89' GL so being the base model I have no ABS. So I can run Virgo's on my car. People have problem running Virgo's on 7xx with ABS, I'd say you're running into the same problem with you're 91'. I'm suspecting your GLE is an 85' or 86'

Well, do you know if you have ABS? If not an easy way to find out and annoy the neighbors is to accelerate and slam on the breaks really fast, if they lock, you have an answer!

Then that's your problem. The 14's won't clear the ABS on the 91'. So either new wheels, or new tires and wheels.
