View Full Version : I can do wasted spark with a hall sensor, right?

Since I have found my 16v head for my motor buildup, its time for me to think about HOW I am going to complete it.
I don't want to do the VR sensor. Why? Because I already have a distributor with a hall sensor in it. I know it might be less accurate, but I think it is good enough for any application.
So If I sealed the distributor up, could I just run the hall sensor in the dizzy (no cap since it wont clear) that is sent to megasquirt, and add another vb 921 module to the MS board and have wasted spark that way?
I will be using MS2-e and a 3.0 board, and I think what I want to do is possible.
Edit: I would also buy another mallory ignition box, to have both having the best spark possible. In additiion, that would allow me to keep my tach since one box will be pulsing just as much as it used to, instead of 4 sparks every 720 degrees, it will be 8 sparks ever 720 degrees, then halved with two mallory boxes

Nope. You need a trigger wheel in there somewhere. Can't do wasted spark based off the volvo dizzy alone.

What about two volvo dizzies?

What about two volvo dizzies?
I wonder if I could gut out a head-mount and cut all but 1 of the teeth out of the thing, I wonder how clearance would be w/242...
Do do sequential, they use the hall sensor gutted, can i do the same thing? One functional hall sensor and one with just one tooth?

just get a wheel

stop over-engineering your ish MrBill, do it the 740ATL way with the sideways dizzy cap or buy a trigger wheel.

Nope, wasted spark needs a crank trigger, period.
The options here for the b230 engine are an LH2.4 flexplate/flywheel with the 60-2 pattern, or pick up one of Dale's wonderful B230 pulley's and fit a 36-1 ford trigger wheel to it (of course also making the VR sensor work with it as well).
There is a way you can get coil on plug (sequential, not wasted spark) with a lone block/head mount dizzy, but you need a trigger wheel with it with the right amount of teeth. According to the msns-e instructions, you need a trigger wheel with minimum one missing tooth. I think you need at least 8 teeth total to get it to work.

Its not over-engineering, its looking at my options
I dont want the mistu coilpacks.
I think I can find a coil pack out there that has individual power connections. Then I can have 2 vb921 modules firing 2 mallory boxes and have my tach still work.
Must have tach, and I have read the tach output options on ms2-e are flaky.

I haven't built or tested the tacho output on MS yet, but I cheated when I went to edis.
To get the tacho to work I hooked up the stock wiring loom for the dizzy and 139 module and I let the coil carry on firing sparks to a rotorless dizzy, lol. so despite running the car through EDIS coil packs I'm still running a stock dizzy setup at the same time so that I can get my tacho to work.
The easiest option would be to run either one of Dales pulley's upfront or get hold of a 60-2 flywheel,
I tried going to DSM coils and a VR circuit ala 740ATL but I had no joy, at first I think it was the VR circuit not working properley so needed modifying and then I think the ignition modules on the coils died on one pair of coils, despite several dwell settings this may be difference between euro and US spec DSM coils. I switched to EDIS and got the car working but had no tacho so resorted to solution above.
Ken (Qwkswede) was going to test a hall sensor instead of a VR sensor against his 36-1 trigger wheel to run his EDIS coils we both experienced similar rpm break up but it was unclear if it was with either the VR circuit in conjunction with the 2.2pcb, however Ken was driving his ford coils using a VB921 ignitor and I was relying on the DSM inbuilt ignition modules.
Sorry if that was a bit confusing but hopefully it give you some insight into your options.

60-2 wheel with the hyundai coil pack
if its good enough for a 12.0 in sams 240 then its good enough for you :-P

the entire time kenny and sam had his car on the dyno down in alabamma they were having issues with spark blow out and an overall week spark when trying to tune the dam thing
it may run nice, but it could run alot better...
(especialy if he put something other than a stockity stock stock head on it

see ken has had problems with intermittent blowout (perhaps fixed, but i remember he had problems)
I remember kenny complaining about some hiccups when he was testing the aw71 in the 740 a few weeks ago.

I'm just throwing this out:
Can you do some sort of Cam mounted sensor? You have two cams on that thing?
I swear I've seen a 740 dizzy that had been gutted and a tooth wheel installed with a VR sensor too?

Sure. DSM's have a dual-pattern cam wheel... 4 teeth, then 1 or 2 teeth... in concentric rings of a trigger wheel disc. That will work to run COP (not wasted spark).
Just need to up the fabrimacation skilz.

Just need to up the fabrimacation skilz.
This I lack
So it seems the cheapest/easiest method here is to get a 60-2 flywheel. How hard is it to tap that hole for the sensor on my b21?
I dont want to have a new motor start on settings I have never tested before, I have to get this setup running first on the b21:(
