View Full Version : B21F intake swap, and 90+ swap (horrible pics)

ok so a few of the issues we ran into while doing this swap on a b21ft.

One... had to grind a bit of the intake manifold down. why you might ask? that will be in the next picture

http://thelostartof.net/b21fm90ps_1182.JPG

this is why, the factory b21f throttle linkage does not work all that well w/ the factory b21ft throttle cable SO we had to adjust things, making it longer and changing the throw on the spool also made it hit the intake so that is why we had to remove a small corner.
http://thelostartof.net/b21fm90ps_1181.JPG

fix for those issues are getting the proper throttle cable and solving this ghettoness

Also I think using a b230 throttle body could also make things easier for the IAC and other parts but that is just me, I have not done this swap enough to know or care.

and the rest of the pics. we fab'd up some intake pipe from what fige had laying around w/ a few straight pieces of pipe and a few welds it all went together really easy like.

also did a 90+ swap so we needed to cut the oil feed and return lines so those would fit but otherwise all went well

so pics

new intercooler piping ... hm

we also installed a better shape turbo as the old one was smoking bad(and yes that is a .63 a/r housing)

holy crap that engine needs like three cans of degreaser lol good work mike!

degreaser is useless....

Haha, got that linkage is ghetto. lol

Thanks again Mike

got exhaust gaskets?

this was another reason for the manifold swap

lol, when i swapped out exhaust manifolds the answer was no. The PO had a firm belief that "black death/insta gasket" was superior to OEM gaskets...no wonder it leaked oil everywhere :-/

So, was it worth the trouble- is it faster, etc.?

more low end power, boost comes early. seems to me that the car sounds different too... maybe Im just crazy

BUt the system is not at its peak performance yet. Gotta tweak some stuff on the intake manifold.

Very nice!

Was there any bending required for the fuel lines to the cold start injector?

Please rub some grease on your intake, it's hurting my eyes. And is that a blue distributor cap?!

fige

yeah had to bend the fuel line a little...

...also cleaned my engine bay, it looks a lot cleaner now.

Why the ghetto cold side pipe? When I did mine, the stock intercooled pipe and TB elbow fit fine. What'd you do for the IAC?

Fyi this happened to me a couple of times, on the same cylinder. Somebody used ****ty gaskets before I owned the car and the little barbs that hold the gasket paper to the metal eventually groove little nicks in the soft aluminum head. I ended up having to pull the head and get it resurfaced on three sides.

Non Volvo gaskets FTL....

Yep.

has anyone made a fuel rail and gone EFI on this type of manifold?

I'm in the process of doing that now. I'll post pics when I get it done.

Glad to hear you like the performance improvement. I'm hoping its worth the time I'm spending making this thing work.

its a translucent blue empi cap.

Isnt that the cap that shocked the bejessus outta you that one night? :run:

Very nice intake mani...usualy tends to be the cleanest part in the bay.

Somebody should do a step-by-step with pictures on this swap.
Oh, and more details on the blue distributor cap and the downpipe to turbo studs and nuts please.

I have a question on the 90+ swap, what exactly did it involve? did it change the location of the turbo any? (do I need to make adjustments to the exhaust?) anything else that changed? thanks for any answers

looks like good times, nice job mike and fige.

the studs and nuts are mine that i get and sell from my supplier

and what kind of pics and steps? we can prob break it down to steps if you wanted it

oh one more thing, the new intake doesn't have the support bracket(long rod attached to the bottom end), I took that off, forgot why.

I'm now in the process of cleaning and polishing the engine bay. (i'm trying to convince frank on swapping the T for the vx15 cam).
Mike you think it's possible to get the exhaust to be closer to the underbody... the speedbumps are a killer.

and in all seriousness, I have a different exhaust note now, especially when shifting at high revs.

If you have the throttle linkage and cable, it should be a straight up swap, except of the hosing from intercooler to intake of course. (make sure to get some vacuum lines, perfect opportunity to get those replaced).

For the 90+ manifold, I recommend upgrading to braided lines, the stock metal lines won't fit.

405 head so used the kjet holes and matt dupuis modified a stock fuel rail to fit.

That's almost a reason all in itself to buy one of your downpipes:-D

I think you should post a basic list of what you need, and how to fit stuff and modify the stuff that doesn't fit, like (obviously) the throttle cable, etc.

yea next time you are over we can just build the exhaust from square zero again if we have a full day or just that to work on, we can add the cat and move the resonator back
