View Full Version : Bagged PV544

Here's a few winter pictures from Finland, from JP Styling garage. The new project is a bagged PV544. Modifications include Slam Specialities airbags with 1/2" valves and dual compressors, 140 front suspension, 1031 rear axle, 4x disc brakes, 240 brake servo and pedal rack, mildly tuned b20, RH ZW1 2-piece wheels etc.

Clearance from front crossmember to ground is little over 1" :-), we have tweaked the suspension a bit more after taking the pics, so it goes even lower now.

I also have a black Amazon with 190hp B20 N/A, 19" BBS wheels, lowered about 5 inches :). Pics of that later on...

crazy nice, so what kind of horse power will a mildly tuned B20 lay down?

::edit:: does it have the 1031 axle in it already?

from the looks of it... it's running the same wheels front and rear... both should have a 5x108 bolt patern.. so it should have a 1031... likely from a 240...

last year I was working towards putting the front suspension from a 140 under an amazon, with a 240 rear suspension... seems to be a winning combination in sweden as well.

I've got about 175 HP in my PV. Not sure if that counts as mildly tuned or not.

With a V-Performance supercharger and a built motor, you can get 250 - 300 hp.

That is really nice! Love the RH wheels too... Do yours have adapters to the 5x112 bolt pattern too?

JuhaP
01-22-2008, 03:15 PM
As Chris_R noted, RH wheels use adapters, so you can choose the bolt pattern and offset. Adapters are 20mm front and 40mm back. The rear wheels are now 8,5" wide, but they might get a wider outer lip -> 9,5" or even 10".

And yes, 1031 rear axle is installed. We used stock PV lower suspension arms and 240 upper suspension arms. Prop shaft tunnel also needed to be modified (it now sits about 2" higher back).

About the engine, I wouldn't call a 175hp B20 mildly modified... We're only looking for 120-130 streetable horses.

Is this THE Juha!? Awesome to see you, looks like you've been busy. I'm sure you sold your 740 a long time ago. I used to frequent your tractor pulling center site all the time!

Not critisizing at all, but why swap the front suspension? I sort of like the mostly metal bushing PV front end. No rubber bushings to mush around, nice precise adjustments for caster/camber with the threaded bushings.

I guess spring (weird diameter) and shocks (weird stroke length vie their odd ratio between upper and lower arm) limits replacements. OK, never mind, I probably answered my own question.

So did you run the 240 torque arms straight forward to the subframing? Not off the top of the differential to the rear of the trans tunnel like the PV?

I always wondered what un- corroded 140 arms looked like!

Looking like a very interesting project.

I have to wait until I'm home to see the pics. Sounds sweet...

I'd like to see it have the front end extended two feet, no body pannels up front, exposed motor, badass.

What, PV's? They aren't as common as 240's by any stretch of the imagination. But they aren't that hard to find.

What is harder to find here:
1) PV444's - 69.4% cooler than the 544 because they have flat split windshields and more special looking all metal dashes.
2) Duetts (PV wagons), especially the 445 versions.
3) 544's that are not rust buckets

Here's a couple pics of the Amazon, it's dirty as hell and the engine compartment is still unfinished... but better than nothing, I guess. I just finished installing rack & pinion steering instead of the crappy original steering box. What an improvement! Wheels are 8x19" BBS CK "brilliant anthracite".

Well, here's one picture from last summer. I also had 7,5x18" wheels on it (Boss XTR). It has quite a lot of modifications, including 4x disc brakes (cooled in front), m46 transmission, 1031 rear axle with diff, Bilstein shocks, fuel cell and battery in trunk etc.

Nice! I'd really like to know more about the rack and pinion conversion. What rack did you use? What mods to make it fit?

It's from 360 Volvo with power steering. Only 2,8 turns (full lock to full lock), so it's pretty "racy". Light yet responsive, very good upgrade. It was a lot of work to make it fit properly and keep the correct Ackerman angles etc. I modified the tie rods so I could use Amazon's rod ends. Steering column is also custom made from 360 and 240 parts.

Thats great - plenty of 360s here for parts! Is 2.8 standard or were there different power racks fitted? I'm really keen to look into this further.

Sorry for the threadjack!

It´s slowly getting there. Quite a lot of sheetmetal work done & a lot more to do. Had to widen the front fenders 1.5" to fit the front wheels even though I´m running the thinnest possible adapter.. The 140 series front suspension is that much wider. Engine and tranny are also in with new motor mounts, air suspension hooked up (no compressors yet), next up we´ll start fitting the hood & doors, they´ve all been cleaned to bare metal already. Then it´s bondo time!! :D

You´ll have to ask Juha about the steering rack details, but installing the rack is pretty simple; weld some mounts to the front crossmember, then recut the threads to accept amazon tie rod ends. Width is pretty much dead on. Getting the rack as close to the crossmember as possible is the hard part, to get the proper ackerman angles, etc.. Here´s a couple update pics on the build, I have rebuilt the doors and widened one of the rear fenders. We ended up putting 10x17" wheels on the back and they are a tight fit! I hate the boxy look of wide aftermarket glassfiber rear fenders. I decided to chop up the original steel ones, so I could get a nice round shape to them. A LOT more welding still to be done... :(

Not much to "update". Sheet metal work is 95% done, brakelines are almost finished. Brake servo + pedal rack from 240 mounted. Seats from Amazon installed. I've finished re-building the B20B motor. We got a couple new projects going on, Triumph T100R Daytona and HD XLCH Ironhead, both will be build to hardtail bobbers. Yeah, they are "motorsickles", unless you didn't get that allready :-).
