It looks like the centerline to centerline distance from the inlet to outlet is about 14.5"
The reason I'm looking at it is I'm trying to figure out how to fit a metal core cat in there.

why?

just install it under the car after the downpipe in the empty space after the first crossmember ... plenty of room

when i get home today I will measure it for you if you want

for a better idea .. that flex is about 6" end to end (4" worth of flex pipe in the middle) .. I would have to remeasure tonight

by the way late model 240s with M47s, have tons! of room for a 3" system with a cat, muffler, because the trans x-member has a larger cutout to put the exhaust in. Unless you have an early model.. Still lots of room for the cat under the car though, so no need for it to be like the stock 240 downpipe....

Why?
so it heats up faster...
and that's where the Denver emissions monkeys expect

Just heat wrap the DP up to the cat?

Mine is under the car with a 240 turbo and it works fine and gets hot enough. I've passed emissions 3 times with it. I had to make a new downpipe for the Cossie turbo housing so on that one I heat wrapped the horizontal lower section to help it out. That kept a little bit of heat out of the car as well. It's 3".

plus...
think how cool a polished stainless setup would look in there
before the thermotec covered it up
