nice, slick idea. you might get some jitter, but there isn't a compelling reason that it couldn't be done.

Go simple and put two "tags" on the crankwheel.

If this is a redblock, then i've seen it done on the aux shaft. It too rotates at 1/2 crank speed, so it will complete one round / one engine cycle.

I don't remeber why the aux. shaft was chosen instead of the cam in that case. Should work both ways though.
