Picked her up last night. I think I will name her "Blackie", after the nickname I gave my dog. I got her b/c my GF really wanted one, and I'm going to surprise her for Valentines Day. Had major buyer's remorse, but after driving around town today, I must say the car is growing on me.

The good: IPD front sway bar, stainless steel braided front brake lines, Koni rear shocks, new tires, new brakes, new trunk/hood/door seals, low-mileage B20, M40, dual SU's, Optima red, tags good till May '09.

The bad: she has quite a few dings and dents, missing only one trim piece (under driver's side quarter window), a small bit of rust in the trunk, nose piece a bit dinged up, ugly tan front seats (rest of interior is red), speedo/odo don't work, needs passenger door hinges (sags real bad).

Dude, don't fix the dents--they give it character, the kind bondo can never provide. Now you just need an overdrive to have a real cruiser.

EDIT: looks like someone on ipd's classifieds (the 1800 parts section, I think) is selling an M41. You should pick that up!

Very nice. I <3 122's. My first real car (not counting the $150 '63 Beetle that preceded it) was a '63 122 sedan. I eventually swapped a lot of a junkyard 142E into it. Drivetrain (engine, M41, driveshaft, rear axle), rally dash, seats, gas tank, radiator.

Sweet. +1 on the overdrive. Just put the switch on the dash near the gear lever. I would make the interior match, fix the rust and the sagging door, reconnect the speedo, and call it good. Look for the trim piece from a car show vendor. You'll find it somewhere. Don't sweat the little dents.

I've always wanted to find myself an old-skool dolly and hammer set... the kind the older body men used to use back in the day. It comes with all these oddly shaped metal dollies, and a special hammer. I could use this to "practice" on the 122. There's no way I could make that driver's door any worse than it is now.

I like the suggestions Paul... that's probably what we'll aim for. Make this a nice, dependable driver, but preserve some of the "patina".

Nice Amazon, by the way. I miss mine.

You were undecided on what you were going to do with the red/clear/red tails on your 142. If you didn't want them I was going to let you sell them to me very cheaply.

Yo Nick, nice car man. I have a M41 if you need it. I bought it last year at the IPD garage sale for $250. It's yours for $250 man, I have put some new gaskets on it and cleaned it up. Let me know. Been trying to get rid of it for a while, but I'd rather it go to someone cool!

You were? I saw a Volvo and wondered if you were one of the "cult members". My brake lights were out at the time, but I fixed them since then.

Tomorrow's the big day... I hand over the keys to Dawn. Keep you all posted on the response.

You didn't keep us posted?! It's been over a day since you gave her the keys!

Nope... gave the keys to her this morning.

I told her I was going to give her my Valentine gift to her today instead of the 14th. She said something like, "Oh, is it being shipped in?" And I said, "Uh, something like that." And she never questioned it again.

So last night, I told her after we got home that I needed to run over to Aaron's house to pick up some Volvo parts to take with us to Seattle this weekend. She said okay, and went to take a shower. I get back home with the 122, park it in the driveway, and as I'm walking up to the house, I see her look out at me from the upstairs bathroom window... I'm thinking, oh crap... the gig is up. But evidently she didn't see the car... just me.

Then this morning, after I made breakfast, I put the ignition key in the Valentine's card, and hand it and a bag of Ghirdelli dark chocolate to her. She reads the card, which talks about "our first Valentines" together, and inside she reads what I wrote: "Welcome to the club". She looks at the key and goes, "What is this?" The key has a Volvo logo on it, and she re-reads the note I wrote in the card, and looks at me with this totally confused look on her face, and says, "What did you do?" I said maybe she should go look outside. So she runs to the front door, saying "What did you do?" the entire time. She flings open the door and goes out on the porch and just stands there looking at the car, saying, "Oh no you didn't... oh no you didn't..."

She starts crying and gives me a big hug. I told her that other guys give chocolates or roses or diamonds, but I give Volvos. You know what she says to me? "This is much better than a diamond."

I think this girl is a keeper...

LOL... I asked the same question... "you sure you want to wear light colored clothing to work on the car?" She said it was her "painting the house" sweat shirt.
