Crazychopstick
02-12-2008, 11:45 PM
Don't really see rain being a problem. Hole in hood will be boxed in. Exhaust systems get wet when it rains anyways. Entire system will be painted with Stove Bright satin black (only paint I have ever found that actually withstands turbo temps) to blend in? better.

I think the rain+exhaust soot makes black dots on the car. But since it's going to be flat black anyways...

needs a "DO NOT TOUCH" sign near, or painted on the pipes!
you could run the intake across the hood then up the other side of the windshield.... some one attach the pictures to the thread and i'll photochop it tomorrow...
you could use rubber seals so that the hood could open... and a flexiable hose at the cowlits hard to explain considering how many meds im on right now, but i can picture it perfectly in my mind... i will try to explain it better tomorrow....

Looks like a fun project Pat. Good to see you are still wrenching away building creative ideas others haven't done. I think a winch in the front grill guard would complete the 'rough 'n ready for anythang' look. I know it would probably cost as much as what you have in the car but damn it would look great and be functional.

Is there a flex section under the hood? Are you going to beef up the welded mounts any? I predict torn sheetmetal and/or an exhaust sliding off the roof of your car, possibly landing on someone else's car. Oh, and bleeding eardrums from the oilcan drumming when riding inside the running car.

Not trying to be a killjoy - I dig it. I would have mounted the exhaust to the roof rack, myself, assuming it'll have one.

I smogged it with the stock exhaust and will save it just in case Johnny Law doesn't like my roof mount. ;-)

I'm doing okay. Getting to spend lots of time with my kids. My oldest son (10 yrs old) is actually helping me work on this car and I'm teaching him all the basics. Paul (oneflat83) actually found the car, so a quick shout out to him for that. Timing belt was on wrong when I bought it, hence the cheap price (plus the dented quarter panel and rusted floor). So my son helped me put the timing belt on correctly and we spent an entire day going over what parts do what and how an engine basically works. Plus some performance basics like power vs weight, turbos/supercharges/nitrous, intercoolers and drivetrain loss (A/C and electric fan came up). He is like a sponge and soaks it all up, is able to process it and actually has the sense to apply the information. He's actually smarter than a lot of adults I have watched work on cars. I was kind of blown away he could actually apply it so quickly and I'm not just tooting my own sons horn. He's going to be automotively brilliant by the time he can drive! :omg:

Cool part is a friend of his mothers stopped by their house the next day and her car wouldn't re-start. He helped the husband diagnose the problem. Air, fuel and spark... he told the guy is what it needed to run. So they checked a few things and it turned out her fuel pump had given out right in their driveway. I was quite proud and he was all excited. :-D

How's the 242 treating you? I miss that car quite a bit.

Thats awesome! One day if I have kids, I hope that they will be into cars as well, but its not really something you can force on them. Smart kid, I bet the friends were very impressed! Kids got an early start and a very bright future it would seem.

The 242 is great, I am in the process of converting back to NA after a stint as a plus T car for autocrossing last year; it did very well and I was always ahead of the STi guys actually. Lots of fun! Sometimes they didn't appreciate me steering with the rear, but it seemed to work for me. This year or maybe next, I hope to race ITB-- I have another honda to drive around while I work on it. It's been a good time. I'm doing a lot more school now and more upper division harder stuff, so I have very little time, which unfortunatly means less time with the car, but it'll get there. I hope to have it caged and running by the IPD meet this year. Do you think you will make it up for that? I'd love to see mad max in person haha!

Really good to hear from you Pat! Keep in contact and let us Oregonians know when you come up next!

It would seem as thought solidly mounting it to the roof would not be the same as hanging it from flexible rubber bits under the car. You could certainly weld a little tower over the pipe and suspend it from above with rubber when it's on the roof.

Dude that's one badass ride... I always wanted to put a police issue brushguard on the front of my car but I'm glad I can vicariously live that dream through you.

I'm anticipating a Modesto meet in the near future.... you should bring mad max II!

Somebody already mentioned putting up red warning signs next to the exhaust. I think you should do it, not for actual safety, but for looks alone. I'm trying to remember all the "warning" signs that were painted on WWII fighters and modern jet fighters... like, "NO STEP". I can't find any good google images... grrr

Oh, I think it's great btw but I can't help but imagine how many problems you'll have with the exhaust burning through your paint/glass. Hopefully that won't be an issue?

Looks a little goofy as is, get the suspension and roof rack on their and it should look decent, it just seems out of place as is.

I agree the rack looks too tall, otherwise pretty awesome lol, id drive it!

Renny_D

Keep the front of the rack tall, add two 45 degree bends on the sides to drop the rest of the rack down to about half that height then fill that front space with off road lights. For more fun down the road I'd "clearance" the rear fender area and go with even bigger tires in the back ala baja bug - my old baja bug rocked 33 x 12s in the rear. Finding a 4.11/4.56 ring and pinion might be a bitch though.

Can't wait to see the rear wing on this thing...

looks pretty cool,

I'd say if the roof rack was chopped and lowered it'd look cleaner. Looks like a top hat.

winch?

big ass PA loudspeaker?

intake snorkel?

dead cat hanging from brushguard?

I agree with all these suggestions. Except the PA system. That's beacoup illegal in CA.
