It's going to be real hard to replicate some of that weld in the coolant passage when it's done on a real head. Unless it's going to be 4 heads with some JB weld in between the pieces.

I like it, I just feel like talking ****.

how? there are so many areas that cant be welded now. why was it cut apart? welding this head back together is possibly the worst idea since its gona be under heat. welding creates heat affected zones and this could cause hot shortness.. ant there cast iron? good luck with that. i hate welding that. preheat will be your friend.

That's got to be the most expensive way to get 260 HP out of a B20. Heck slap a supercharger on a stock motor and get almost 200 hp. Don't get me wrong, anyone willing to take it on is cool in my books...not sensible, but cool.

gsellstr
02-13-2008, 11:14 AM
Are any of us really sensible? After all we ARE driving Volvos and trying to make them go fast. :-P

230HP NA from a B20 takes a bit more talent than the newer stuff. Nice work though!!

Also notice it's not the same head. The stuff done in the exhaust side is different between the two heads.

I don't believe the Lindqvist head was cut apart to do the port work.

Or do a two-piece CNC milled head?

if you can do all the cad/cam/r&d yourself it's really not that bad. i used to work at a prototyping shop, i saw that kind of shizz all the time :e-shrug: and the guy obviously knows what he wants in the end, so...

hudson

It's possible that it has to meet some racing regulation such as the head has to be a volvo casting..

You could always drill, tap and then plumb the coolant around to each section of the head.

Lining the sections up for the rockers is going to be interesting.. oiling them will even be more so. I wait to see how it turns out.

Roger: Thank you, thank you and again, thank you for keeping us all updated on your progress with these engines.

Much of the evidence I see of radical stuff done to B20s is the odd linked pic or video, so to see a well documented build including explanations and dialogue with you is a real privilege!

An inspiration to be sure.

Yes i think that to.. Its a 73 block.. 92.5 build for turbo with b21 first owersise et pistons.. (Turbo)
and B20B crank and "stake" 8 boult.. The rosspistons is 350 model special made for b20 by kg-trimning..
Made in us.. :)

The 89,86 bore block withe the ross piston may get this, Spm 2.5L billet crank.. 92.5mm..

Just a thought seeing that setup in place. If you were to move the alternator up to the left side of the block (where the AC compressor would mount), you could run the downpipe down and out a lot easier. I'm sure fabbing up a bracket to do so would be very simple as well.

I just want to have the alternator ther it is.. :)
But that was a god idé..
Ther is not a big problem with the Downpipe,
It will be a little tight but it will just run over

check my grill thread
let me know what you think
"smile for me daddy"

Yes, can i do that.. :)

Roger, I'd love to see pics of the intermediate steps of welding up the manifold. Do you plan to break each piece to weld individually, then weld everything together?

regards,

Mike

Yed, it wil be a little bit tricky...

2 and 3 may be welded togeter as one pice..

4 as one piece and 1 as 2 pieces..

The colektor wil be splited so i can weld 2 and 3 to it..

And the other colektor to 4 and 1, and at last put it together
and weld the splited part of 1.. Then the rest is simpel..

seriously.. you owe me money for all the underwear i've ruined pooping myself everytime you post new pictures.

That is nasty...

The kl wast is god.. But want it to flow the other way, bekaus of the heat from the turbo, some of the parts is from the kl wastegate. :) (may be the same as biltema).. That is a god one.. But it wil not work in the small space i got left under the turbo.. To close to the radiator....

B230 cylinders in a B20 block. Allows for 96mm or bigger bore over the B20's original max of 93mm or so. With a stroker crank this can equal a 2.7l+ B20

Thank you.. :) Tis was step 1.. Step 2 is under construktion..

Going to do this 1 more time with B230 et and a new better B20..
The first one was never atempt to run, only a test if is going to work..
And i think with rock-block fill in it it coud be bored 98.XX and be a 2.8L block..

Thats the plan now..

I think Biltema was out of inconel mandrel bends when he bought parts for the header. If the focus was overall weight savings then I don't think he would bother to use a motor with a cast iron block and a cast iron head.

The way he is building it, using the mill to cut the shapes, loans itself best to thickwall, mild steel.

Good luck machining 18ga inconel that way, or even 16 ga stainless for that matter.

I also get the sense he prefers to MIG weld.

A while ago on this thread i was asked to post a pic of my B20 turbo manifold...well heres a very bad pic of my manifold.
It has equal lenght runners and is made from stainless steel mandrel bends..TIG welded.
The flanges were water cut from 16mm stainless steel

It's the same head as the one I posted before but it's beginning to look more ready now. Self made crossflow head for B20. Nice.

Not split pulse. You paired it wrong.

Not split pulse. You paired it wrong.

are you sure?
I'm pretty confident the firing order is 1-3-4-2 so pairing 1&3 4&2 would be acceptable.

But with the difference in length probably will screw up my efforts anyway. If it's wrong I don't care too much it'll still go hard enough, or I can remake it.

I love the effort some of the guys go to with these engines, it makes great inspiration for those that don't work in engineering/auto and can only aspire to having fun and suprising a few modern cars on the street.

I'm an ass and have screwed it up. no, no I haven't I ummm calculated the time the gas would take to meet the turbo, at the primary RPM range and due to different runner lengths this design is perfect.:rofl:

Oh well I'll build another once the car is running and see how it goes.

RHD and power steer...that makes space harder than in my car.
But atleast your brake booster is the later type and is on the passenger side.
I took mine out and fitted a tilton pedal box.
I see a Aussie compliance plate....where in Aust are you?

Canberra, the powersteer and brakes are from a 164.

Not a hell of a lot of room, about 5mm to the PS pump and about 15 to the steering shaft.
Dump pipe will be tight too. I want to fit a 2.5" with a seperate 1.5"wastegate pipe that'll merge under the driver somewhere.

Still got to make an inlet manifold fit in there too, but there is actually heaps of room for that the design doesn't have to be compromised for space. Just using a single EF Falcon TB and a dirty big plenum.

This thread inspired me to get of my butt and I've pulled the old carby fuel system out, I'll use the line as a return.

What crank pulley have you fitted there?
I see a multi V groove belt setup

Custom, I had a machinist mate build it for me, the front vee was taken off the original and a new multirib made up to press into the front. It's also got 4 allen bolts holding it in there too. Was balance with the crank/flywheel and pressureplate.

The multirib allows for the little 80amp alternator and there is a toyota aircon unit that bolts to the plate under the alternator.

Ya sorry to point it out- just thought someone should. It will be interesting to note what the difference in turbo response end up like when you change it. Cheers.
