View Full Version : Put my beater 940 on the dyno

02-13-2008, 02:15 PM
Had the morning off work today for some scrapyard shenanigans (which failed miserably - the only volvo I came across was a 740 diesel ) so instead I decided to take my ****box 940 to a dyno for a laugh.

Although the guys at the dyno assure me it's pretty damn accurate, I'm slightly skeptical on the numbers. But then again it does feel pretty damn quick, just as quick as my blue one was at a much higher boost level.

147.5KW or 197.8bhp at the wheels :omg:
173.5KW or 232.7bhp at the flywheel

The rather pathetic mod list is as follows...
1997 940SE Turbo / B230FT / M90
Stock 530 head rebuilt and skimmed ~1mm
CR is ~9:1 and the T cam is retarded ~1 degree
Hugely Ported 90+
Similarly Ported TD04HL-16T pushing ~16psi
Removed aircon for more intercooler flowz
Some of the exhaust missing :-P

Time to get to a dragtrip and see if I can back these numbers up!

Those are good numbers. Mabye the strip will back it up.

Nice!
Those numbers seem very plausible... my 88 745 put down 174HP @ 15PSI (12b turbo) thru the auto box. Stock downpipe, 3" cat-back, deleted cat.

Off the chart broseph!

I don't see why not with a 16t

02-13-2008, 02:34 PM
good numbers, not all that supprising. have fun at the track :)

02-13-2008, 02:38 PM
autocalibrating charts are for suckers.

02-13-2008, 02:40 PM
haha thats cool.

02-13-2008, 03:31 PM
Maybe if your T cam wasn't retarded you'd make more power.

02-13-2008, 03:44 PM
sounds about right.

I'm kinda struggling to believe that (or Ryan's car was a lot more broken than we thought)...but dynos do seem to vary quite wildly in this country. Did you get a torque figure? You'll have to get it to Power Engineering sometime ;-)

02-13-2008, 06:18 PM
Did you have my chips in there?

02-13-2008, 07:23 PM
That is impressive Steve.

Makes me wonder about my car now.

02-13-2008, 08:42 PM
I think he must have the chips fitted, to be able to run 16psi on a 16T.

To be fair Ryan, we know the top end of your power curve was being killed by the compression leak...it's where compression is most important...and of course high RPM is where you make your peak BHP figure. I think comparing peak torque figures would be more telling (when looking at a dead engine, anyway  ).

Still, great work Steve. I bet it makes for a very fun daily beater :)

Ryan's car

with his turbo the size of my head and ten million pounds of boost was exactly what I was thinking of when I first saw these numbers. Maybe his engine just really was that unwell?

Nope I wasn't running any chips, and I've no idea how it doesn't ping at these boost levels (Maybe tesco 99 octane is really damn good!). The only thing that comes to mind is that the new fuel return line I put in was a noticably smaller ID than the stock one, maybe it's ghettoed up the fuel pressure?

Well, time will tell as I'm about to start work on my car again, ready for the summer. I feel a dyno run coming up in the next couple of months.

02-14-2008, 08:12 AM
Worst dyno graph ever.

Not your numbers steve, but that graph is horrible to look at, did it not have any printouts for the torque or am i reading it wrong??

02-14-2008, 08:41 AM
id assume youll be on the limit of those injectors aswell .

std MAF ?

just shows what opening up the exhaust can do

Good numbers Steve, It'd be good to get another strip bashing session organised.
I felt lonely at the last one but it was nice having an entourage cheering me on lol...

Good turnout running strong numbers would be awesome!
Keep up the good work, as I said in Mikes update seems to be a lot going on in garages at the moment(including mine for a change).

Very nice!

Your dyno operator should be able to tell you the TQ. After all, the HP was just calculated from the TQ and he can extrapolate the numbers for you. ;)

I've run those Bosch dynos before.

02-17-2008, 03:59 PM
Not bad at all Steve!

If Volvo can get 190bhp from a 13C at 10psi (Turbo+), I don't see why 233bhp isn't possible on a larger 16T at 16psi with some supporting mods.

02-17-2008, 09:44 PM
Turbo+ appears to go beyond 10psi when it feels like it...more like 15psi.
