View Full Version : Vector Volvos

I have worked a bit in Illustrator and I do some vector illustrations of Volvos. After making a lot of drawings, I have worked my skill up and I can now do some pretty decent drawings.

Yes, I CAN draw your Volvo for ya!

But PLEASE, read this first:

1. I don't work for free. Yes, I have done a few drawings for a few turbobrickers for free, but this was in the beginning when I didn't know how popular this drawings was going to be and when I was quite fresh at it. If I now are gonna have to spend time working on a drawing like this, between work, school and other daily chores, I'm gonna have to need something to work for.

2. Please, take a while to think about how much work this actually is. I spent 6 hours on jao's 242, perfectionating his drawing to the very last detail, and I got paid $59. That's less than $10 dollars an hour, would any of you work for this hourly wage?

3. It's not "just a drawing" it's a lot of work and effort put into an image that you can use for whatever you want; print t-shirts, posters or make your own signature right here on the forums. It's a PERSONAL picture for YOU to do WHATEVER you want with, and I fix you up with the files you need to do this.

4. If you like my work and want to help me out in my dream of becoming a multimedia artist; give creds for the picture and tell your friends that I made it.

5. Criterias for your image:
- It has to be high resolution, mobile photos are no no!
- Please, choose a good angle (the best angle) of your car.
- Good contrast to the background is preferred.
- Good lighting also goes a long way.

6. PRICES:
A drawing takes about 2-8 hours and I charge about $40 an hour.
Depends on how detailed you want your vector to be.
See pictures below for estimated time usage.

Good work! I find vector drawing very difficult. I wish I had the time to play with it more.

Here's one of the Alfa that turned out alright,

Mad AI skillz. I hate the Windows CS2 version because the points and handles are set to some microtiny size that'd look good on a 640x480 monitor and there's no way to scale 'em that I can find (apparently you can scale them on the mac version:grrr:).

Sucks because my lappie is a 15.4" 1920x1280 so they're about the size of f*cking sugar granule. Makes vector work squinty and tedious to say the least.

Cool stuff- respeck.

Cecilie240

or if the fullsize will make it easier, i have that too..

It's not that important in vector, when I've drawn it, it can be resized to any size without losing quality. As long as it's good contrast in the image and I can see all the lines, it should be ok. I'll finish my drawing atm and then I'll take a look at this..
It's my first drawings, so this car might be a bit hard, so don't be disappointed if it didn't turn out the way you thought.. But I'll try my best =)

Depends what kind of volume your talking about. If you go and order hundreds of shirts you can get them very cheap.

You can always use cafepress.com, but I'm going to try to do it by hand at home. Basically it'll be cheap, but labor intensive.

I made a shirt on cafepress once and it came out pretty nice. Image hasn't faded much since I had it ink'd rather than iron'd. Nice thing about vectors is you can change the colours without too much hastle. Even though I don't drive a 240 I'd still wear one.

You should put some interior detail, like front seats on it. Oh and a grill and my wheels:oogle: If you do I'll gladly make a tshirt and tell all the OVT guys where I got it. I bet they'd be knocking down your door to get their car made too. Who know you might be able to make a small business at this.

Yeah, poor student needs some money ;) But I have a lot of stuff going on at school as well, I have some big assignments to do as well... So I can only work on this when I have the time. Another reason why I can't do it for free. So if ppl want their cars made, just pm me and we can talk about it. I'll customize the image as you want, and I'll try and do my best. And since this is my career of choice, I really enjoy expanding my portfolio as well, as I'm becoming a multimedia designer. I also made a new friend on DA that draws Volvos as well, So maybe he'll teach me some tricks ;)

Now, I just wanna make a few things clear:

3. It's not "just a drawing" it's a lot of work and effort put into an image that you can use for whatever you want; print t-shirts, posters or make your own signature right here on the forums. It's a PERSONAL picture for YOU to do WHATEVER you want with, and I fix you up with the files you need to do this.

4. Yes, you get a picture without copyrights on it, but please, if you like my work and want to help me out in my dream of becoming a multimedia artist; give creds for the picture and tell your friends that I made it.

5. Also, I have a job on the side, but it only covers my basic needs. I usually save money from this kind of jobs for other fun stuff or car parts. Please, support me :)

Now guys, I want you all to think about this, and after you read it and still want a drawing, please PM me with a high resolution picture of your car, some info on what you want done with it/how much work you want me to put into it and an offer of payment.

Thanks for taking your time to read this, I can't give you the impression that I will do this for free anymore.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, dear Mr. Borrie and 240T man; I promised you both drawings, and I haven't done anything yet. I have given my priority to jobs that pays, like a few web jobs I am currently working on. I don't have the time to sit for hours with this now, I am really sorry. If you are willing to give me some money for the trouble, I would be glad if you still want them done :)
And Mr. Borrie; You should definetely get a new and better pic of your car first :P

I hope everyone understands and won't be mad at me for making this decition, but I think you all would have done the same!
Also; designers are GREATLY underestimated and underpaid, juct check with professional firms how much they charge for this kind of art.

Thank you all for reading this.

Cecille, those images are outstanding!

Don't take any crap from people who are too cheap to buy. Also, don't give away the mass marketing rights for nothing. Someone could easily use one of your images to make a pile of money, so you need to get your cut too.

I recently retired from thirty years in the advertising and graphics business, so I know what I'm talking about. If I had provided free work to everyone who asked, I would have never made a nickel!

Good luck with your work. You are a very talented illustrator.

Jesus, you stuff puts mine to shame. Especially in that a) you do it the proper way and b) you spend a lot less time doing it. I agree about not giving away a full license to do whatever with your art. Creative Commons has pre-made licenses you can use that give you a lot of flexibility and let the people who buy your work print them on shirts, posters, whatever, but can't re-sell it or use it for commercial profit. Just an idea. Hate to see someone with so much talent get hosed.

Wow, thanks a lot! :D That really means a lot to me, coming from a former designer :D

Now, I just wanna make a few things clear:

Hi Cecile, love what you have done here so far and yes, this forum really takes talent for granted :D

I'm also a graphics designer, and very fluent with Illustrator. I can help you out with some of those requests there.

LOL, ok, well just to prove my worth, I think some of you have seen my work on this forum..

Of course this isn't vector art, but I think this would be a fun exercise. Infact, i'm really tempted to do a vector version of an 744SE. :D

EDIT: Didn't know you were going to charge people now, so nevermind. Infact, I won't bud into your business...

Haha, seriously. I get burned out drawing my own car, nevermind other people's cars.

I forgot to mention it earlier, but I'm wicked impressed with the quality of the wheels in that last drawing. I absolutely hate drawing tires and wheels. Drawing the Coronas on my 740 took me about 5 hours worth of work, nevermind the 2 weeks I put it off because I didn't want to do it.

This is not vector.
When you draw in vector, you can think of it almost like a digital map.

Or I guess you have seen in some professional PDF files, you can zoom as much as you want on the font.

This is because it is not stored as an image.
eg. you can export the vector to a jpg file, but as it is made - in vector, you can make it virtually as large as you wish.

If you make a car in vector, you can print it on lets say 200" large poster or even more, if you wish, without distortion at all! eg. unlimited zoom without distortion.

You can also in vector later edit your design, eg. add points, move lines, etc.

Vectors are saved in .ai format or .eps. I use Illustrator to do this.

Umm yeah, i prefer 3d modeling cars myself, and Yno20b's work is really quick and nasty but still has some effect, no-where near as good as yours Cecille's of course due to the time he invested in it. I spent months of nights 3d modeling cars with no reward, ah well.

this is kinda fun

The "vector" stuff I do is in Photoshop. I never learned to use Illustrator properly so the quality of work goes way down. I create gigantic files to compensate, but still no match for a true vector. I really need to dig through my Illustrator book (if I still have it) and play catch-up. Anyone who says they make true vector drawings in Photoshop is either a fool or doing it WAY too hard.

Cecilie, I actually think the quality of the wheels outshines the rest of the car. It's probably just me, though, but the wheels look 200% better than the car itself (which does look good as well).

how can you have vector and "true" vector, exporting paths in photoshop creates a vector file, same output as what illustrator does :wtf:
