I recently totalled my '85 745ti, and now need a new smog exempt home for the engine, I was thinking maybe a P1800. Has anyone seen this kind of conversion? I have access to a ??year P1800e with no engine/no trans, and it looks awfully tempting. Any info would be appreciated.

I was following a guy that was doing it a few years back but I lost track of the webpage whem my hard drive went south...It is a TON of work, cutting, welding and reworking things...If it has been a major dream and you want to spend the time then go for it...But it is in no way a weekend project...From what I understand it is a year-long mod... :e-shrug: May not be what you're after, but just passing along what I've heard...

It's a lot of work & fabrication. You can get 250hp out of a b20 for a lot less trouble. I'd go for a 142 or maybe a 122. They have more a little more room I think.

I'm in the process of doing such a conversion, and its a ton of work. I've got lots of hours into the project, and I'm nowhere near finished.

At a minimum, you need to modify the cross-member, make motor and transmission mounts, fabricate an exhaust manifold, modify the inner fender, modify the radiator mount, install a remote oil filter and cooler, install an after-market engine-management system, build an exhaust system, etc. etc.

My goal is to end up with a stock-looking body, and I think it is possible, but far from simple.

If you are still interested, e-mail me and I will give you the benefit of the solutions I'm planning to use for the various problem areas. Even though there is far less room in the 1800 for the turbo, I think I've solved all the fitment issues. Unlike the conversion mentioned above, my version does not require modifications to the firewall.
