special thanks to Vince for bringing out the F250 and trailer to haul the 242 back for a mangohick turbo swap session.

i had to cut a frame from the one video to show actually how much smoke there really was... after seeing that i am not surprised someone called in a fire.

Where the deuce is Mick and that one picture, it summarizes the entire experience. You can barely see my car through the smoke

i didn't get a chance to take a good picture, i actually just threw the camera down and forgot to turn it off when i saw all that smoke, we really did want to put a fire out if there was any.

"I'm just glad that it's my car that's not on fire."

haha

well, it was my car that caught fire last time soo it's all relative. this time i only hit my regularly scheduled m46 replacement. engine ran like a champ.

my old other rx7 smoked pretty bad too, and on the freeway, in traffic.. a chp motorcycle pulled next to me, yelling at me to get that thing off the road, and i told him the apex seals were bad, so he said whatever, just get it home safe.. hahahha

NO
Upon further inspection one of the snap rings that held the bearings in failed.

All I did is put my compressor on this, I touched nothing inside the turbo.

Mr. Bill wasn't running an air filter and the concensus was that his turbo ate a pebble.

I dunno man, when the band was playing doug and I looked at turbo and no snap ring.

Although the pebble theory holds ground also.

Either way, I'm a dumbass

a saab turbo I got for free.

But yes, I killed it.

BUT as I said I didn't take it apart, it was not a lolz mrbill cant put the turbo together properly.

I left with 0 shaft play and 0 smoke.

thelostartof

I have bolded your error.

No idea in condition of turbo, sitting in friends shop for X months and was given to him in trade for something else.

All I know, almost 0 shaft play when I got it, shaft play disappeared after starting the car and allowing the turbo to spin up.

once and nonce.

the compressor wheel was missing about 3-4mm in diameter after it was removed. foreign object damage. but the housing didn't appear to be damaged AT ALL.

I wonder if he can get a bulk discount on compressor nuts.....

hum
Its a stainless line (made by a real shop, not me) with about 400 miles on it, I checked it before the turbo went on. By checking, I mean I cranked the car without megasquirt hooked up and oil spewed all over the place.

The return line is a -12 barbed fitting to 3/4 inch hose to stock hose, theres nothing to clog, but its been replaced in the last 300 miles

So, its not the problem

yeah i didnt deny it. $40 later the car was driven home, so it made for:

A. Stressful 20 minutes
B. A really good time while the band was playing

meh, now I have a filter:lol:

500dollar744ti
02-18-2008, 09:23 PM
ok how about this theory, since you removed your timing belt guide plate the belt walked most of the way off the pulley, a chunk of it flew off and got sucked into your turbo, broke the shaft at the center and chewed up your compressor fan... haha that was just a joke.. you probably sucked in a pebble or something.

MrBill
02-18-2008, 09:25 PM
The belt has stayed in the SAME place the whole time. Its like a mm off the pulley Why does that irritate you so much? That and un-cut zip-ties drive you crazy...

After the cops made us move our cars (which wasn't a bad idea) I made sure someone had contacted Vince, then went back to tell the cops we didn't need a tow truck. I was PR dude for the day.

If it gets this bad, do something about it. I put a cover plate from a B21 on the cam gear...problem solved.

MrBill
02-19-2008, 12:46 PM
wow towery.
Thats probably 3x further out than mine.

I have the plate for the motor, it didnt (or doesnt) fit for some reason related to me having to modify the cam-pin when mine sheared. I think I fixed it but decided it was ugly and unnecessary

Was that progressive, like take a trip and find it another mm out? Or did you open the hood to that?

Paypal is fine, but just so you know I'm not making any money off you. But whenever my dads truck moves it's not exactly appreciating or fixing itself and he makes me very aware of that.. Not to mention the fact that I'm the one who does all the maintainence for free.

Hmm, would that be new tensioner time? I have a slightly similar issue, but just not that much overhang.
That is a new tensioner and new belt.

I have a 530 head on a b23 block. The valve cover on a b21/23 head has a semi-circle section that covers the back of the cam gear. The valve cover on a b230 (530/531) doesn't have that because those engines used a plastic backing plate as part of the timing belt cover...therefore I can see the cam gear, and I noticed the belt was walking off the gear. It would have hit the metal timing belt cover before coming off completely, I think. But it didn't rub on anything.
