View Full Version : should I get her... or not?

I've searched high&low for soooooo long now for an 940 sedan as a project car.
Is not an easy task to find one here in the midwest that's rust-free AND to be able to fit her into my budget of $1,000...:-P
Finally, I stumped over this:

The seller will throw in a hood, a door and a grill in good shape and which I'll have to replace myself.
This isn't such a big deal, since I always had a fetish for a black 940 anyway, meaning I'm going to paint her black (if bought!)
The real problem: the motor is junk, but the turbo was replaced about 1000miles (documented!) before the engine went bad (oil leak + the oil level never been checked)
However, I have access to a great running B230FT K with only 130K (I was thinking a Stage0 job before droping it into 940: rings, bearings, seals, etc. all-around), or even possible a motor build-up.
I'm still uncomfortable about the 1K price for a car with a non-running motor though :???:
The Interior is in great shape.
This is a longer-term project (1yr at least), so I'll take my time to do it right, got a relaible DD (knocking in the wood!)
Shall I bite this projectile?
And one last Q: is this a LPT car?? have no experience with cars newer than '91/940s.

What's going on with the front end,and the zip-tied grill?

If the interior is nice, I'd go for it. Plus it has them thar alloys not steelies (they look better without the centre caps I reckon too).

How is the interior? The rest of the panels besides the door and hood? Salvage Title? Miles?
What about the brakes/tires/transmission/electrical etc?
Offer him $700-800 for it if those are all good.
I have bought nicer running car for $1000, but it may just be my area. It is a dented up non running 940...not something a lot of people are going to run to the bank for...

Ahhh, zip ties.
P.S. If the engine ran out of oil, the turbo did too. Trash.

I wouldn't bother, it's too much for the condition it's in.

does it have the M90 gearbox? It's worth the extra cash, it's a really nice gearbox, lightyears ahead of the M47.
if there is a turbo present but there is no 'Turbo' inscription on the airbox >> LPT (B230FK)
If the airbox says 'Turbo' it's a HPT(B230FT or B200FT)
If it has no diagnose pinbox under the hood (near driverside strutttower) and an electric fan it's a late series 940. It will have the OBD connectorsocket inside the glovebox between the seats.

I'd say it's a bit much for a car that needs a motor and paint... and maybe a turbo.
I paid 300 for this:

500 for this:

Each of them was driven from the place I bought it (or could have been in the case of the silver 745 - if I'd just put 3 quarts of tranny fluid in it).

I WISH! This is an US model:-(

It's dirty, but the seats are in greta shape. Nothing a good,ol' fashioned deep cleaning job wouldn't solve!
IE; Was it crashed ?
No, just drunken frat IU boyz driving it:-P.
Believe it or not, all the dents on this car are the result of one single night of binge drinking.

160K, title clear. Oh yeah, and it needs a fender on the passenger's side too!
the car was moving and braking just fine before the motor went out

actually, I was thinking more like 500:)
yeah, this area doesn't have too many good looking 940s in great shape for $1K..
my guess bad teenage/college driverr?
that's correct! riddle: he went to #1 party school in the country!
I was actually guessing just somebody off of Turbobricks!!!
actually, never seen on Tb a car in such a bad shape! EVER!
P.S. If the engine ran out of oil, the turbo did too. Trash.
thanks, I'll check

The only thing that's p[ositive here is: I'll get space in teh seller's shop + all the tools I need to bring her back on the road and the advice of an experienced volvo tech behind this deal
Where midwest are you?
Indiana, W. Lafayette
The car originated in TN/Nashville, I know the original/only owner, good people, kept it maintained and without a scratch for years, until he gave it to his son to drive it for school. It was in IN for the last two years only, so no rust problems on this car.
Thanks everyone

Nice deals!
However, GA has more Volvos available for such great buys than IN.
As a matter of fact, I considered for a while buying one from around Atlanta from cl,, but then I figured with the transportation expenses, even if driven back to IN, would be another 500.

Most definitely great deals to be had here - but we have more fun (and create better memories) going to get them. The last 2 were from other states - Big Red came from Florida, the black 940 is from North Carolina.
I would think the lack-of-rust would make the trip worthwhile - or is rust not as bad in Indiana as it is in Ohio? :e-shrug:
Either way, you have a pretty nice ~500 dollar car there! Rebuilding it yourself is a process (I'm learning) that is gratifying in new and exciting ways for me.
I plan to start buying and lovingly restore Volvos to resell.

I have a b230ft from a 98 940 50-60k~ (japanese) that would drop right in place of the current engine... I would take 450 for it the long block.

Judging by the center-inlet intercooler and the newer style ABS system I'm guessing that car is about a 94?
Any reason you can't rebuild what's in it, or did it ventilate the block? It should be a squirter block - and if mine is any indication, they clean up quite nicely.

As crappy as that looks, everything is cleaning up like new after soaking in Simple Green and water. The oil pump is silver again! :omg:
New bearings/rings/gaskets/plus some extra stuff (hatch struts, wipers, etc.) set me back ~400 or so...

I really have no idea of the gravity of the damage to the block. I should've tried and see if it turns by hand, but I didn't think of it
As soon as the weather breaks, I'll take it apart and do some post-mortem analysis ....with pics!

Thanks for the offer, but I think the shipping from CA would for sure give me a stroke:)

this car "lived" most of her life in Nashville, TN, just for the last 2yrs was here in IN, and last winter the car wasn't even driven because the owner skipped the winter sem for an internship to Costa Rica,so all's good as far as the rust goes.
Well, the latests is: the seller lowered the price to 800, plus I'll get the space and tools to work on the car. So I"m game!

I would suggest to sell them north and heavily advertise the lack of rust on the body.

isn't a jy, this guy works for a private car colector, his boss buys the cars cars and dismantles them for parts scavenging
however, this 940 is his "on the side" deal

oh, ok, I'll keep you in mind, I'll have to see first what's inside that dead motor
