'86 240 strut replacement

I'm trying to replace the front right strut, but I don't know how to remove the old one from the bumpstop/spring holder/top thing that the top of the strut is attached to. any help?

edit: i should have been more precise, I'm trying to remove the shock, and the strut assbembly is already out.

My book says something about volvo part 5173... I dont have that. Maybe it is irrelevant.

you need a spring compressor and you need to compress the spring and remove the upper strut nut that connects the strut to the strut mount.

Then you should be able to access the gland nut that holds the strut insert in the strut housing.

rinse and repeat

yeah, the whole thing is out, and the previous shock took a huge dump and exploded everywhere, so thats all loose. i have the top half of the old shock which is stuck to: the bump stop, the plate the spring contacts, and the other metal thing that bolts to the top of the wheel well. if i can find a camera ill post a pic.

So, what, just wail on it? I'm always so hesitant to because I usually resort to that two steps too soon and ruin things.

The nut is gone, there is nothing holding the strut insert to the strut mount, except rust and corrosion.

On the other hand, you can always buy a pair of strut mounts...

I'll throw a guess out and say whatever made the old shock explode also rammed it into there. BFH was the answer, thanks a lot guys.
