I hate "making a thread" but my t5 swap is coming up very quickly and I'd really like to retain my speedometer and odometer capabilities.
Also, do all T5 transmissions have the same trans output? I can't find my damn JTR swap manual, but it had the part number listed, but it was for GM swaps, not ford.
Please help mrbill:nod:

Pretty sure you've gotta take the cable to a shop to have it retrofitted with the T5 gear on the end.

there IS a napa P/N
It is referenced in Doug's swap guide AND in my JTR swap manual, which is missing:oops:
There is a couple other odds and ends to track down. One is the speedometer. If your using a 240 with a mechanical speedometer then you’ll have to get Napa speedo cable (though the part number escapes me), but it will mate up. Anything that has an electronic speedo need not apply.

premature bump as this is "time sensitive"

Electronic speedo FTW.
I bought a $15 Steeda plug, probably could have done somethign cheaper that that was easy and purty.

I don't think it's a certain cable. I think you need to get a Mustang cable with the right gear on the end and then get an adapter for the other end so it fits the Volvo speedo.

Napa #48403
Should plug right into the T5 tranny. Also, I think the gear is not part of the cable, the gear stays in the tranny.
You take the Volvo cable, take off the bits on the speedo end, and put them onto the Napa cable. You may have to cut the spring down.
I haven't actually done this, because I ended up putting this stuff into a 90.

Okay so this speedo cable, I searched google just a moment ago and came up with:
Also, the NAPA speedo cable listed in this article, part number 48403, does not correspond to any speedo cable NAPA offers.

I'll call tomorrow and find out for myself
But is the gear I need inside the t5? Before the hole was being plugged, I noted a yellow gear that would spin the speedo cable. I assume that is the speedo drive, and I still need the gear for the proper ratio? And then the above part number (where ever I may find it) would attach to that gear and also seal the hole/attach to the speedo cable
Edit: through more research I have found my yellow gear to be the "drive gear"
Here's a chart for ya to look at, it's for T5's, both NWC and WC's
Speedo Gear Chart
5 Speed | 1983-89 | 1990-93 | 1994-98
Ratio/Tran. gear
2.73/ **** 16t **|** 19t **|** 21t
3.27/ **** 19t **|** 21t **|** 21t
3.55/ **** 20t **|** 23t **|** 23t
3.73/ **** 21t **|** 23t **|** 23t
4.10/ **** 23t **|** 23t **|** 23t
Drive gears come is 3 tooth sizes:
6 (black), 7 (yellow) and 8 (green).
Edit2: no, I am a tard.
I dont understand i guess. What I saw was I guess a plastic gear attached to the final drive or something of the trans.
I actually need some yellow gear and a 21 tooth gear to drive the speedo cable

do a search for "hollywood speedometer cable" They made mine. was about 50 bucks. I went with the "red" gear, 24teeth. the speedo reads a tad fast but I have a 3.91 rear end. Should be perfect with your 3.73.

Yeesh, I don't know about the gear. Like I said, I ended up not using the cable at all. I do know that on 7/28/2000 when I was preparing to do the swap, I went into Napa, and I bought cable #48403 for $22.23.
On my T5, the Ford VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is plugged into that hole, and it sends a signal to the ECU. If I were to pull that VSS, I don't know if the driven gear would come with it.

Just made that purchase.
Now I need to go to the junkyard and find myself an end to a speedo cable (maybe AOD will work) and the unit itself that blocks fluid and attaches to the speedo gear

I simply cut 1 Volvo outer cable approx 6-8in from tranny end,and cut a similar amount off the end of a Ford outer cable, mated them together(with some suitable diameter rubber hose and 2 clamps) and slid one of those generic Napa replacement cables down the inside :) Laugh if you want..........but it has worked for about 20,000km now............can you say Cheapskate?

the trans I had actually had nothing (no plug or anything). So now I have to go find the rest of the stuff, being the plug thing that the gear goes through and at least the end of the speedo cable
im almost there!
