View Full Version : So You Think You've Got Dish?
Well how about this then? One of my new wheels arrived today, for the back of the 142. I've included my mobile phone in there for scale:

And here's a picture of an original 165x15 tyre next to a 295/50x15 (what the 142 will be wearing):

The wheels came from Blitz Racing in Ohio- an ARE dealer with awesome prices and also a Ford Capri specialist if you or anyone you know needs parts. Thanks to Norm, the owner, for all his help and I can highly recommend him to anyone who needs ARE stuff- especially those of us on this side of the pond.

Sorry- I forgot to mention it.
They're 10x15", 3 3/4" backspace, 5x4.5" PCD (going on an 8.8) Blitz Racing has also supplied me with 20x ARP 3" long, 1/2"x20tpi wheel lugs and some open ended lug nuts. I'm going to get the machine shop to redrill the front hubs to match.
Oh, and the thread on how to get those to fit under stock arches on a 142 is hopefully coming soon. ;-)

It's not going to be much worth looking at for a while yet. I needed the wheels so I could determine how wide to build the chassis rails. The car is still very much in the construction phase.

6" front wheels at least. 205/50 on 15x7 would put the nose down quite a bit and give pretty good steering response if you ever do have to turn the wheel.

well, it look kinda battered by the time it got here, and the four link brackets were doing their best to attempt freedom. Think they may have needed another few mail depots before the damage got that bad though.
There's an 8.8 4.10:1 ring and pinion coming across in another one!
We were just joking the other day about putting Torq Thrusts on a Volvo. I'll need to see pictures of them on the car.

No problem, but I've just got the small matter of building the back half chassis and narrowing the axle first. I should have it rolling by July if all goes to plan.
Lots of the coolest Amazons over here wear 17" TTII's. Really suits them, IMHO.

that's gonna be awesome. with 3.5" backspacing thta is like, ET-31 or something crazy. 50mm less than stock.
Going to be cool to see you back-half the car and make a tubular subframe for it.

No, it's all in my head. Think Chassisworks pro street conversion with four bar and added rear wishbone for alignment and you're about there, though.

Cool- I'm mostly interested in seeing how the rear "frame rails" will be treated- basically the boxed in rails in the unibody that the rear shocks bolt to.
As I'm sure you know, that metal is going to have to be completely removed in order to fit the wheels in.
In other words most of the material where the shock bolts up here:

Awsome, Mark... will fit right in with the style I reckon! You still keeping the car body colour red?
The colour will be colour matched to the red engine enamel I've got for the block- hey presto, instant colour coded engine!:-D

I'm currently in the process of removing everything from the B posts back. Floor, chassis rails, inner wings- everything. I'm doing it pro street style. It's quite daunting doing it, but easier in the long run as the rear end is not a compromise, but built for the purpose.
Got hold of some old tyres (pure luck in that size over here) and fitted them today on my way into town. I thought the rims looked good before, but I'm really pleased with them now.

Looking good Mr Bandit!
I'll dig out my pics of the Escort's rear end tonight, as your essentially doing the same sort or thing, 4 link into the remains of a stock floor pan. Whether you do it the same way or not sometime's its nice to have a comparison, certainly get the creative juices flowing.
Classic ford are doing a Mk2 Cortina with TT2's, and thats a similar shape to the 142 and they look awesome on the car. I would be inclined to go with some reasonable rubber upfront, personally I'm not a big fan of skinny's on the front, get some 6/7/8" wide front's because the difference in rolling resistance is negligable.
Keep up the good work, Speak soon

Yeah, I think my mind's made up on 6's for the front with 195/60x15's.

All the tin work is steel except the access panel for the four link which is Ally and attached with Dzus fasteners.
There are 2 lengths of box section that run forward of the crossmember welded between the floor pan and the lower half of the 4 link brackets, they're designed to spread the load placed on that part of the car.
If you have any questions, just drop me a line or give me a bell.

Very nice work, Nick. Mine, unfortunately, will be 3x2 except for the roll cage. None of that fancy tubular stuff. Your four link's very low, isn't it? What's the reason behind that? Or is it just the angle the pics were taken from? What are you using for sideways location? I'm building a wishbone for mine.
Those pics remind me too- I must make a bead roller. The one I made for intercooler pipes won't be man enough to do steel.

Tube is pretty, cause there are no main rails to speak of it looks nicer in tube, not that you can see any of it now it's been skinned.
Your right the 4 Link is a bit low but thats because the wheels are only 24" in diameter, Ideally I need to lop off a couple of the lower holes and redrill some new ones higher up to suit a lower ride height. Don't really want to do that until the car is somewhere near complete as then I can do the maths on weight transfer and balance so that I know where the neutral line is for setting the 4 link.
If I ever run big wheels I'll need to stretch the arches but I don't think I want to go that route (well not at the moment, lol)
Cappy, thanks for the complements but no project thread at the mo. I just haven't had time but at some point I will get round to it and I'll also make one for the 242.
I'll drop in a couple of teasers every now and then. Women troubles have kept me out the garage for the last couple of months but I'm about to start attacking again very soon, lol.
