View Full Version : Intake improvent idea (stock 16v)

So i whipped this splitter up a while ago. I installed it on the stock 16v intake mani and hooked it up to the shop vac (blowing side). With a lil adjusting of angles it equalizes (as far as my hand can tell) the 4 runners. What do you guys think? This is just a quick prototype. My only concern would be how it would behave under boost. or if on an N/A motor would it do more harm than good, being another obstacle the air has to move around? and now for the pics...

It kind of seems like it would do more harm than good. It would restrict the intake a lot and diminish all of the performance gains you would get from equalizing the airflow.

I fear that the welds would fall apart with the vibration.

did you try to add a vagina to your intake manifold?

HAHA...it does look like a vag doesnt it.

Instead of that welded mess, get rid of the huge plastic wedge on your throttle plate, thin the throttle shaft and cut back the screws. This is all basic well proven stuff. You don't need to reinvent the wheel.

Nice idea, not the solution. I think the restriction that it would cause would cost more HP than it would make. It might help even out the distribution but I don't think that would help much.
+1 to the VAG.
Wow.
I'd be afraid to let that thing in my garage. Looks like a fleshlight for the tin man.

thanks for the input. i'll scrap it and save up for a nice custom manifold down the road.
But for now...all hail the vag!!

For my friend Matt who just got ****ed over by his girlfriend I pose to you a question.
What's the useless flap of skin around the vagina called?

brutal, but i see your logic.
also, it really does look like you're trying to add some sort of strange labia looking thing to your intake. something tells me it will just screw airflow up.

I suppose you could try that, altho I would hazzard a prediction that its not cleanly enough executed to work really well (or, said another way, you've got a lot of finishing work ahead of yourself). If you've got dyno time coming, at least try it out and see what happens. Not sure I'd bother on the street but here's what you'd want to look for:
Do a pull, cut the car off, and pull the spark plugs out, take note of the color on the ceramic (oughta be a visible difference between 2&3 and 1&4). Repeat with diverter. It'd be better on a dyno because you can then gauge things and see if its causing a reduction in power, smoothing things out, etc.
There will be a 16v manifold for sale when I get done with everyone elses. It won't be cheap.

interesting way of joining two dissimilar metals.

That's what I thought at first, too, until I saw the pic of it out.

Interesting thought, but like the other Kenny says, I think it would need to be very aerodynamically correct to do what you intend it to do.

Kenny, Thanks for the vote of plausibility...however small it may be. If I ever get on a dyno i'll make a nicer one and see if it does anything. Gotta focus on the actually building the car for now...that reminds me i need to PM you about MSnS maps for the 16v.
Thanks for the input guys.

Clean it up, make the welds better, make it have as little surface drag as possible and you might just have a temporary fix to the flow imbalance.
There are better ways to go about fixing the imbalance, but this will work.
This thread shows why TB still has slow cars. Kenny can probably guess what I'm talking about.

Finish work would go a long ways here. But I like you're thinking.
Something else to keep in mind: DON'T KNIFE EDGE!!!! A foil (think cross section of many airplane wings) is a more aerodynamic shape.
Ultimately, I think there is more to be gained from doing this kind of thing internally when building the manifold.
Lastly, while it's a good exercise in thought, there are many very high power cars not paying any attention to this.

the problem with the 16V mani isn't uneven distrubution left to right of the throttle body. it's that the air tend to go right past the middle 2 runners heading for the outer 2
