So as most of you know, I was having some problems with my 195 940t. I thought I fubared a valve, due to the crazy pre-detonation, but a compression test changed all.

results were 140, 140, 79, 80.

Back two were super low. We knew instantly that I had a blown HG

So Spencer (spe1983) started pulling the head at about 8 pm. I just now parked the car in the garage after a successful test drive about 10 minutes ago. Its now 2:10 am. Not bad eh? haha. She runs awesome! Was too afraid to push much boost, and I will continue to be for a few days. Figure I'll let everything settle.:)

Anyway, here is some pics

The head was made in 1987! Looks like Volvo re-did the head for the previous owner. This car was a one owner, and I bought it with exactly 100k. Wonder how the previous owners managed to blow a head in 100k?

meh we hit everything up with a smooth sanding stone. Nice and smooth on both block and head. It was already super clean when we took it off too. Should be good

That was the copper spray we sprayed on. Helps the HG stick better. Good stuff

Yeah I hope so too. I just smoothed out both faces after scraping off all the old gasket material. Just like we do here in our pump shop. Seemed to bring both faces very smooth to each other. A straight edge verified flatness, it felt nice. The copper spray should help keep everything together. Still cant believe we got most of that done in about 4 hours, not bad at all.

You repaired a head gasket? Man, that's some heavy skills right there...

I would've just used a new one.:-P

That copper spray is some nasty/tacky ****. I usually spray the gasket with a couple coats and leave the surfaces alone that way I don't get metallic laden adhesives in the combustion chambers or on the cylinder walls.

Been there done that....last motor I got from Mike had 150k original gasket...i blew a heater hose, bearly got the guage over halfway, fixed the hose and it was cool...2 weeks later left me stranded 5 miles from home, pulled the head to find blown between cyl 1 and 2, compression test sounded weird as you could hear compression blow from cyl 2 when you checked 1 and vice versa....after the gasket replacement, the car never ran better!

Yeah i was trying to prevent that crap from getting on the cylinder walls and in the head(notice the cardboard). But it was really windy last night and it didn't quite work out as well as it did when I did it inside w/ no wind. Im hoping that the gap between 3 and 4 doesn't cause the gasket to pop again. Seemed to have worn some since you had to get it back home. Time will tell on that one.

did you figure out why you were detonating?

87' head ... sucks that means that head was replaced once already, might want to check the date code on the block also

did you figure out why you were detonating?

Because the cylinders where basically sharing compression.... aka - Leaking into each other

Date code on the block checked out, thanks to your parts hook up a while back I had a spare set handy, Thanks again.

did you figure out why you were detonating?

Prolly cause he beats it like it owes him money... I didnt think the noise it was making was detonation, i think he had some wierd compression leak from 3-4 during 3's compression stage going back to the intake. It sounded nothing like the detonation i was able to get messing around with MS on my 240. It was very mechanical, and steady in its pace. Plus the time when he had it at WOT and he was bouncing between 10"-15" of vacuum, stumped me. Also it might have been off a tooth at the cam but i doubt it.

Hey i received compensation this time, which I can no use to repair the brake failures I've had in the past 5 days on my 142 and 245.
