Anybody know where to get the orig Volvo redblock engine paint?
Which other paint is the closest match to the redblock paint?
I was looking at the POR-15 engine paint and they offer a few, like classic Ford, Chevy, etc. Any of these close?

Maybe RSI can set you up with a couple of cans?
They did my block and it's right on the money.

RAL 3001 (pictured above) or RAL 3002 looks to be just right. We have a nearly new volvo exchange engine here and checked the color with some examples from our paint supplier. I think 3002 would be the best.

I just used DupliColor ceramic brake paint on mine. Looks nice and should stand up to the heat.

I wanted to use the POR-15 product, because it's as bullitt-proof as the cast iron itself, but comes in pint cans only.
I like the idea of using OEM paint in spray cans. There's a Penta shop on Lake Texohma, Sherman TX and a West Marine there, too, will have to check.
Chris, where did you try West Marine? On-line or local?

I just called West Marine and Grandpapy Marina in Denison and they no longer carry the Volvo engine paint. The guy at Grandpappy said that NAPA carries a 'Tractor and Implement' paint that is very close, and that's what they use on Penta engines now.
I'll go after work and check it out.

Brookhouse volvo parts in the UK do an exact match paint in fairly small can (but it goes a long long way!). Its really good [aint and any brush marks dry out of it. If you wanted you could also load it into a spray gun and spray it on but personally I think it looks just as good brushed
Its about £10 GBP + post

The common mfgr of the Penta Red paint is Tempo, which is what West Marine carried, and they are out of business. I called every marine supply around and nobody has any. Lots of Penta green, gray, but not red.

Pete, I tried WM on Central in Dallas. Tempo is the paint that we used to carry at the prop shop, but even then, they didn't carry red. And then, as you found out, they are no more. Regency Marine in Rowlett works on alot of Volvos, but all of the newer Penta engines are black so I'll have to check if he has anything.
I am not opposed to using Ford red, but if you find something else, please post it.
edit\ Just called Regency, he has two shades of red in stock in rattlecan... It's a drive for either of us.... Do you know where it is?

I know some of the marinas on Ray Hubbard, but not in Rowlett. Haven't heard of Regency.
From here (work) it's not too far, 20 min straight shot out the Bush tollway to end, right on Firewheel, left on 66 into Rowlett.

I've found the dupli-color Ford red to have sort of an orangish hue.
Krylon red is a pretty dang close match.

Duplicolor Ford Red again. I was actually thinking it's a little more red than original. Then again, I've only seen 20+ year old, halfway worn off original paint...

I recently (yesterday) decided that I spent a LOT of time cleaning/prepping/painting that block considering that maybe 10% of it is visible once all the crap is installed. :-(
but damn, does it look good!

Someone mentioned the POR Ford red...here it is on my B20.

It is a brighter red than the original, but how close does the colour have to be anyway?

That looks like it's still wet! Nice though.
I do like the POR products, and if there's any paint out there that can hold up to heat, grime, rust, it's POR-15.
I'm still trying to find the Penta Red in spray cans. I think the Volvo red is unique, and when my engine was built 12 yrs ago, the machinist went to great lenghts to get it. It's much darker red, less orange. If you see them side by side there very different.
Not that I'm looking to have concourse condition restoration but want as close as I can get to orig redblock.
I went to Hirsch Auto.com and saw hundreds of different engine paints from Fords to Austin Healey. Each is unique, and factory match, except they don't have Volvo red.

Woo ho! I just picked up 2 cans of Volvo Penta spray Enamel, "DuraPlus", Red p/n 827501, Genuine Volvo part.
I found it at Regency Marine. Thanks Chris!
Just for clarification, the above red is for B18/20/B21 blocks. There is another Volvo Penta red for later engines that is a brighter red used on the AQ171 (B234F) and Ford V8's of the early '90's. The 827501 is very dark compared to it, and a lot darker yet than Ford red.
Spoke to Hirsch and they said the Volvo red is very close to Packard engine red, and can make up to the exact spec. If the Penta supply runs out, that's where I'll go. For now, I've got plenty.
