Oh man. I sure wish I could get a cheap rebuild kit containing every single feasible wear item shipped to me in a week, manufactured by the OEM supplier, for my 450ftlb rated 6 speed transmission.

Oh:

And I'll just chuck it together following the factory rebuild manual. How the hell does not everyone with a passing interest in cars with a domestic have a 900hp daily driver? This **** is so ridiculously simple. You just buy parts and put them together. Holy christ.

~$470 for all new wear items and Timken bearings

(if I was made of money I'd have bought new synchros [the selector, obviously I got new cones]. I'm kinda regretting not replacing the 3-4--its teeth are acceptable, but I guess just barely)

did you upgrade the shifter forks from the crap aluminum up to steel while you were at it?

They're not crap aluminum, just the normal kind. They're actually very beefy shift forks compared to other trans. I don't intend to powershift the everliving **** out of my Volvo station wagon!

they are beefy but they still bend easily for a hard 3-4 shift
this is the reason that there is a steel 3-4 shift fork available

edit:

the steel 3-4 fork is actually standard in the viper
"Replace your weak aluminum shift fork with a much stronger steel fork. This is the upgraded T56 3-4 steel shift fork used in the Vipers and will fit all T56 transmissions."

so just a drilled and shaped aluminum plate and have the input shaft tip shortened a bit?

are you going to do something fancy with an internal piston driven clutch or just use a m90 bell housing with a normal fork?

that's not an m90 bellhousing, it can't be because m90s are all one piece. 10 bucks says that is an aw30-43 bellhousing.

10 bucks says that is an aw30-43 bellhousing.

And it is! I'll be using the T56 hydraulic TO bearing thingy, with 850 clutchnet cluth and PP, albeit with new splines. Hopefully, I can set the input shaft depth to a good depth with an adapter plate, otherwise I'll have to space the flywheel out.

how would you space the starter into the bell housing to compensate so you still had good mesh for the starter gear?

aka fail on moving flywheel away from crank shaft...

I'm betting the nipple off the end of the input shaft past the splines is going to have to be trimmed back a little

total fail on my part...

you could get a ring machined to move the bell housing out and away from the block 5-10mm and space out the flywheel the same
but i still don't think its a good idea...

I love how tbricks can turn adapting a transmission into a process similarly complex to that of launching a space station.

Great work on the trans Chris. Does it look like the tunnel will need to be modified? I suppose the 960 has a fairly large tunnel vs. a 240... maybe you're good to go as-is..

I PMed Dug strickler a while back and he said he didn't have any trouble fitting it in. I think it should be fine, it's not much beefy around the top than the autobox, it's just big because of the countershaft wart that's underneath the trans, where it won't cause any issues. The annoying clearance is in the back--I have to fit the diff snout into the narrow cage provided in the IRS, the gas tank is snug all around it :run:

If it was my car, i would build and adapter and have the bell housing + clutch in the front and then the output from the clutch would connect directly to the driveshaft and run that back to the rear transaxle where i would make a C6 vette transaxle fit with the nice T56 and the **** would even STILL have the amazingly awesome fiberglass leaf spring:-D

easy to work on, far better weight distribution
and a lovely shifting system that would make the one in a VW combivan seam simple:lol:

but the poi would never do anything nearly that awesome:grrr:

Fit a 940 tank, the live axle tank lacks the bit which wraps round the propshaft, but otherwise fits in the same space. I've got both tanks out of a car if you want pics, but I'm in Spain at the moment so photography would have to wait a week or so.

THe MKIII alum unit should hold up as long as you don't decide to put slicks on it. Then there's the explosion problem.

I look forward to seeing the progress on this.

Camaro, 2000 I think, not sure. The c5 corvette ones are transaxles, but very similar nonetheless. I think they look prety similar when not bolted to a torque-tube or bellhousing
