View Full Version : 3" stainless downpipe For 850

Just the couple of pics that were taken of the downpipe I biult for Phil's T5-R
It is a 3" downpipe, and I built a neato reducer that necks it down to 2.5" under the car (the EST catback it attaches to is 2.5".
Turned out ok I think- oh, maybe 800-900% better than the retarded stock POS.:-D:-P
Why the heck do they need that crazy bend right after the turbo? Geez. Anyways someone at volvo was smokin' the good stuff when they designed the original setup.
New setup as built how anyone with an IQ greater than 8 would have designed it:

front section (you can kind see the reducer before it hits the cat:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll214/WatsonFab/misc%20exhaust/DSC01205.jpg
back section, nothing special:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll214/WatsonFab/misc%20exhaust/DSC01206.jpg
Annnnndd... as a special bonus, an EXTRA DISTURBING picture of me riding it like a horse/holding it like a huge cawk trying to make a porno face:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll214/WatsonFab/misc%20exhaust/DSC01203.jpg
Actually, maybe it is my arrogant asshole benchracer face. Because I just talk theory and don't ever build anything that "works". :-P Ya. That's it.
Wish I had taken some pics of it installe,d but it was late and I was tired by the time I got it all in.
Maybe Phill will be able to snap some pics under the car if he happens to haver it jacked up at some point....
Anyways this was a straightforward thing to build overall and I imagine the gains to be even better than those seen on a 740/940 that already has a decent downpipe in comparison to the stock 850 turd pipe.

It's hot. So is that red 744 behind you, hmm.. :) Phil's car sounds awesome and pulls awesome after that downpipe, quite a change from the stocker u-bend!

nice, this is exactly what i have in mind to build for our 850 T5. It is already fast enough but with high speed cruising (ask Homer, when we tried to catch his train this morning haha) the engine could benefit quite a lot from the better flow.

This going to be a semi-production piece?
I mean... ****. Pay more credit card debt down, Eric, don't buy shiny things... Even if they're really shiny and really freakin awesome!

Looks really good! After all this effort I'm thinking that your user name should be changed to Colonel Stainless or General 409 or something.

Ha thanks guys.
Unfortunately it won't be a semi-production piece, I didn't make a jig or anything so I have no real way to copy it.
What I can say though is that after seeing Phil's car my wife wants to sell her Scion xB and buy a V70r. :omg: Like I am gonna argue with that! We actually went and looked at a'98 saffron V70r yesterday.
Sooo... if that happens that means I'll have my own wwd/awd test mule, which means all sorts of goodies will start appearing for those cars.:cool:
When we get one that'll be the first thing I do- full 3" stainless, the factory exhaust on these cars is terrible. If it is one of the models that got the cheesy "dual exhaust", it will get canned. 1 turbo= 1 exhaust tip, kthxbai.
Hopefully we can find a 5-speed....:-D

They dont exist in the US (R 5-speed). There are a few V70 T-5M's. Ask me how I know.;)

Thanks- I live in Canada though and while they aren't super common here (like probably only 10% manual), they are definitely around. ;-)

Niiice. I am glad that the pipes you guys used werent ruined after all of us kicked them around all afternoon.
I hope we can do that again. I want to drive up after my engine is done and give Phil (and others) another ride... this time with out blown tranny/engine mounts.

Guys it really doesn't matter because I don't live in the US and we did get them here. :-P
I might not be able to coherce my wif einto a manual anyways, in which case I'll have to wait until she upgrades and I can turn it into a project.

Nice pics Kenny, that Porno face is fantastic...
The pipe so far is great...wonderful sounds as well, not droning at all as I was afraid with the wagon, that's what I would end up with. HUGE difference over stock, the butt dyno is agreeing with as well...way better response, and way better top end...(oh and the new turbo helps as well). I think we may have to make a few pipe alignment tweeks in the rear like you talked about with the EST portion, I've got a bit of a knock...
Although, I'm not convinced the turbo is in that great a shape.... :-( I'm pretty sure I'm puking oil...haven't had a full chance to look into it yet...might just be one of the fittings, but it might also be the turbo itself...I'll be checking into it more later.
I'll also take a bunch of pics next weekend...
Great stuff bud, as always, your work is brilliant...to bad you never actually do anything though...

Took a while, but I did have it slightly "jacked" up last night and this morning...
These were the best shots I could get:

Thought all the V70R's were AWD?
Or am I getting them mixed up? Was it 98' when they switched to S70/V70 models, or were they still technically all 850's back then?

Its not technically an 850... it IS an 850...:wtf:

Yes...it's a wonderful camera. If you click on them, you can go to my flickr page for full res sizes...mucho bigger...Your work deserves to be displayed!
And I am SOOO getting you to build me the pipping for the RIP kit. Now that I have the EST one installed, we could mock one up super fast, and then I could sell this one...I'd take a hit, but I'd be worth it for the look of the work you do...
We'll figure it out for the fall or something.
Make me one?...I would be more than willing to pay down some of your debt for a job like that...
I need a DP but haven't even thought about making one for my 15g when I have a perfectly new 16t sitting right next to me...Flat>conical...

Maybe Kenny and I can make a jig for the rip kit...hmmm...smelling money...
Captain Bondo
08-13-2008, 02:40 PM
Sounds good Phil- the other consideration is if you still decide you want to do a header at some point (although I know that may be further than you want to go with this car) it would make sense to do that at the same time since the turbo will most likely end up slightly relocated- svaes building the pipe and then modding it later.
BP3,
I kinda just whipped it up on a saturday while intermittently helping with the turbo swap, I didn't make a jig or anything, so I have no real way to make a copy.
I honestly didn't really consider making them to sell because I think a guy on volvospeed already makes them, and also the OBX exhaust is crazy cheap apparently, so I don't know if there is a real market
edit: I do think I could make and sell a nicer RIP kit though

Ya...I dunno about the header...that's going to be a few years away at least I think.
I'm just loving the car as it is at the moment, it's so smooth, and with the new power it's great. Although, after reading a bunch about the rip kits effects etc...I'm thinking I may take Lucky up on one of his ECU "tunes/upgrades" to make sure I'm not running lean etc...and getting the most out of the engine from an efficiency stand point.

I did read that but figured I could coax you into it with flattery...;-)...Looks nice for something you "just tossed together"...I'll check out the others you mentioned...
I would however be interested in a RIP kit!...
