View Full Version : Whiteblock flywheel questions

What cars with which engines had "solid" flywheels, and which sizes are they?
I could get 228mm solid flywheels for whiteblocks easy and cheap, but a performance clutch for that flywheel will be a little bit hard to push for daily use.
The 240mm or bigger flywheels will be better in that aspect, with an easier clutch to push.
Or should I go with 228mm flywheel instead? Which flywheel is the best for performance? (talking weight, rotating mass and where the mass is located)

I wasn't aware of any different sized whiteblock flywheels (in terms of diameter). I thought itwas only single mass or dual mass.
In any case, a single mass flywheel is going to be better for performance, not only because it's lighter, but because you don't get that nasty driveline shudder at higher power levels like you do with a dual mass version. Fwiw, some people weld the two sections together to counteract that shudder: http://forum.savarturbo.se/viewtopic.php?t=21686&start=0
I remember weighing my single mass wheel and I think it came in around 25-30lbs. Couldn't tell you what a dual mass one weighs though.
If you run a hydraulic clutch then the clamping pressure might be less of an issue.

Yeah, I sure have experimented a lot with flywheels and clutches on the redblocks. But on the whiteblocks it is like starting over from scratch again.
I will never ever use a dual mass flywheel though. I have one on my car now, but OTOH it is not much over 300NM of torque so the shudder stays away at the moment.
The lightened flywheel sure made a difference on my redblock, and I never had to think twice about the shifts. The engine was always at the rpm I wanted it to be.
With the whiteblock (being relatively rev-happy and all), the dual mass flywheel is no good combo. I have to wait during shifts for the rpm's to drop before I let the clutch out.
So I am looking for a single mass flywheel to get my desired driveability back.
They do come in different sizes, but I have no idea in which cars they came. That is my question here.

I've been checking into this lately as well, since Gwen's WILL get a single-mass. I haven't found clutch size specs yet, but the single-mass was used up to mid-year (chassis 499xx and earlier I believe) 98, at least on the S70T5's (which should be the larger clutch, though I dunno if we got different clutch sizes here in the states or not). Supposedly the single-mass flywheel from those models will support the R clutch as well.
I just checked this one and it's the 228mm setup as well. Perhaps that's all we got in the states?

According to what I've heard, this is how it breaks down (at least for Europe):
Anything post MY2000 is dual mass. Prior to that T5's, R's, and T5R's all had 240mm pressure plates on single mass flywheels, anything else got 228mm pressure plates with an indeterminate flywheel.
If there is such a thing as a 228mm pressure plate for a single mass flywheel, it's probably physically the same flywheel as the 240mm one, just with a different set of dowels/holes. Then again, the bolt pattern of the two sizes might be identical. I never measured the plate in my car, but here's what it looks like:

The whiteblock flywheel? It's 20.0lbs.

IIRC mine was like 22-23lbs and change or something like that, knocked it down to 18lbs.
I just ran a T5 clutch in my 850 (~$150 cheaper than an R clutch), bolted right up to the NA flywheel since it was standard diameter.

ive seen a solid flywheel on the t5 engine, was for a 240 mm clutch iirc, looked less heavy as the dog-dish of the redblocks :-P

Happen to remember if the disc was a 228 or 240? I've still gotta source a flywheel, and I just wanna make sure the clutch and flywheel will mate. VolvoSaab I'm sure has flywheels, I've got a deal on a T5 clutch.

I can tell you what sizes the flywheels are, but not wether or not they are dual or single mass... That's the problem.
This is just the 850's. The P1 S/V/C70's have a much longer list.
850 S, SE, 2.0, 10v, 95-97: 228mm
850 turbo, 2.0, 20v, 95-97: 240mm
850 turbo, 2.3, 20v, 95-97: 240mm
850 T5-R, 2.3, 20v, 95-97: 240mm
850 R, 2.3, 20v, 96-97: 240mm
850 turbo, 2.4, 20v, 96-97: 240mm
850 GLE, S, SE, 2.5, 10v, 93-97: 228mm
850 GLE, S, SE, 2.5, 20v, 92-97: 228mm
850 TDi, 2.5, 96-97: 228mm
