Maybe early to think about the Euro meet summer of 2009, but it would be nice to plan a little during the winter, and also to get an idea of when to plan vacations and days off from work etc.
I guess we are doing Nürburg ring again in 2009. But what else are we doing?
Dates for the meet?
A poll is made so that we can see which weeks in the summer of 2009 that we can do this in. The range of dates for me is pretty flexible, but I would like to be able to keep it to the 2nd half of July and 1st part of August if possible, so that is what the poll contains.
The poll is of course multiple choice type so that you can select all the weeks that you might be available.
Date is set: July 26th (Sunday)
People going to the Nürburg ring, and the car they will bring:
Philip (Turbosteen): 760 16VT
Jan Willem (JW240): 240 +/-T?
Fredrik (Frpe82): V90 3.0 NA tuned to the maxxx
Ruben (Ruben): A bike or a 360 (same weight, same stability, same speed? )
Audun (Morley): Will try to come in unknown car
Joris (volvo78244): 960 16VT, or Donkervoort
Jan (Janspeed): 940 T
Boris (Mr.Borrie): White Rice (760T)
Leon (Leon_pp): 142R by Leon
Chesh (Chesh740R): The 750R , if not the 940 Sport will have to suffice
Jelmar (J2_): 740 8v or 16vT, If my JohnV goodies last haha
Chad Wilson (Chad242ti): N/A 245
Ben (Benzine): Volvo'd Indy
James (foggyjames): Mini-brick?
Vladislav (ipdown): 960 16vT
Sander: 480ES?
It will be really fun this season as well :-D

Maybe. It's all to soon to say that I'm coming, since I hate to pull out when I realize I can't make it.
But end of July, begin August is perfect for me. Just gotta shuffle the $$$ right.

I voted for the first 3 options because those will be my work holidays, almost the same every year. The Nurburgring is game for me, I'm open for other suggestions...
Is EU4.0 already? That would mean I missed two of them...
Talked to Jan and Philip today, they were looking also looking forward to this..

EU1.0: The UK BBQ international meet in 2006.
EU2.0: The Vallåkra international meet in 2007.
EU3.0: The Nürburg ring meet in 2008.

EU3.0: The Nürburg ring meet in 2008.
Ah ok, so I did miss those, I thought last year's meet was EU1.0 but it actually was EU3.0.
Already looking forward to EU4.0, we had our own little mini-meet today at VKB (Ruben, Philip, Jan, Jan-Willem, me), scored a few nice parts

Yeah. I had the names and numbering changed since we discussed it and found out that this was a more correct nomenclature.

But what else are we doing?
Another day tot the Nurbürgring:)
Or something like a bbq?
We could ''rent'' a dyno for the cars, and look at the performance of each car.
If you go with a few cars at the same time the price per car drops...
I would like to see the power output of my car:cool:

I believe the Uk crowd had a weekend at BBQ's with a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach followed by a weeks tour of Scotland planned.
This could always be expanded into Euro 4.0 if needs be.

My guess is that if I sum up enough money to go the ring etc., there's nothing left to come to GB. Oh and there are no ferries left between Norway and England. Closest is Denmark. (At one hell of a prize.)
Ryanair is always an option, but I'm not going to put myself in the passengerseat whilst any of you maniacs are driving....
I'll be more than happy to host a meet (maybe we can do our own version of SE?) that can take up a day or two or three, but of course I won't be able to cover the entire cost myself at that point.
If that suits more people (as many don't have 'ring worthy cars) then I'm good with that. I just need to know. It's possibly not the most ideal venue on the calendar, but we know how to party!

If anyone wants to fly to Dusseldorf airport I could pick you up on my way to the Ring, almost no detour for me.
I've been searching the website of the Ring for requirements for the car driving the Ring, does it need to be streetlegal and/or registrated for normal traffic? It could be possible that I have 2 'Ring worthy' cars by then, but just 1 will be registrated.

the car must be legal, I think, as the 'Ring is a public road.

10-07-2008, 03:47 PM
Well, according to the law it's a public (pay) road....
I can't imagine you can drive on it without MOT/TüV/APK whatever its called in each country..
How do you insure a non-registered car? Is that possible?
Ruben
10-07-2008, 04:01 PM
Over here in the Netherlands a car must be registered to insure.

Ive been doing a bit of research on flights and prices and it looks like its going to be around $1200 to fly to copenhagen round trip. Im beginning to have second thoughts on going this year but if I can get 10 people from the east coast to go we can get a group discount on SAS but I dont think thats going to happen with the econ in shambles and everyone hoarding their $$$ (can't really blame them though). If anybody from the states is interested in going for Vallakra, August 15-16 let me know so I can start generating names and get some #'s running.

Update: I talked with SAS Airlines on Friday and they gave me a quote on a group rate airfare of around 750 bucks. The only catch is that we would have to get at least a group of 10 to go. I think thats a bit of a stretch but if I could get the names of anyone who might think they could go, it would be helpful. BTW: we could always do some other siteseeing stuff for the non volvo people if they want to go.

Keep me updated, I'll try and make some effort to come to this. I want to see Fred wobble round the ring in his V90 with a labrador in the back whilst smoking his pipe and wearing his comfy slippers. Gout is a terrible affliction for a man of his advancing years.:-P

For all the guys who are interested in going from the USA:
Send me a PM so i can start getting names down for a group rate on airfare.
Note: I am NOT planning on going to Nurmburg Ring! The distances are not resonable for a 10-12 day overseas trip. My trip will include Vallakra, Gothenburg and Köping. In between will most likely be a stop at Sten, Sellholm and possibly a couple others.

edit:
and that's not true at all:
The minimum age for Hertz rentals in Sweden is 25 years of age for all vehicle groups.
It is however possible to rent vehicles from 19 years of age on payment of a young driver surcharge in the amount of SEK 80.00 per day (excluding tax) with a maximum charge of SEK 800.00 (excluding tax) per rental.
*** Effective 01 January 2009:
The young driver surcharge will be charged in the amount of SEK 80.00(10 mufuggin dollars aint ****) (excl. tax) per day with a maximum charge of SEK 1,200.00 (excl. tax) per rental. ***
The young driver' surcharge is not available when renting a Hertz Prestige Collection vehicle.
Requirements for corporate account customers may vary. Please contact the appropriate department.
Maybe I can rent a car through my work's travel agency :ninja:
edit2:
and in germany (where it really matters)
Mini, Economy, Compact and Midsize
Minimum age is 23 years old with a supplementary charge of EUR 19.63 (that's a bit more but it's okay) (including tax) per day with a maximum charge of EUR 196.35 (including tax) per rental.
I'll be 23 before this shiz happens. It's going down.

:::Stuff about car rental:::
I didn't realize there was a surcharge for a younger driver. I though it was cut and dry "no". Anyways, as I said, i dont think we're going to germany so if your willing to fork over the extra bucks just to drive (which there will be 9 other people to split with anyways) then go right ahead. I've done my fair share of driving in Sweden and am absolutly willing to be driving around and sleep. :)
-Greg
Also: Do you work for a travel agancy or some travel booking company? Maybe you can do some of my legwork.

No i work for a government contractor that uses some American Express travel utility. I'll be emailing the HR dept. Monday to see if we're allowed to use the service for non-work travels. I figure if they already pay for it, why the hell not. Although something tells me I'm not going to be allowed to use it (maybe they pay per-booking?).
And I understand not wanting to go to the newburgerking, but it may be a two-day detour for me and maybe a few others with dreams of a few laps. Maybe it won't happen, but in my eyes, I cannot go to any part of Europe without doing the biggest thing that would draw me there.

I'd rather come to Nurburgring. Please, add me to the list:
Vladislav (ipdown): 960 16vT
I hope 500-600 euros for the fuel will be enough for the trip from Bulgaria to Germany
(~2500 km one way), and then back.
But how much money should I prepare for the event time in Germany?
I hope an 1K euro budget will be enough for the whole thingy?
How many days is the meet? Hotels nearby? Any sugestions?
Oh. Are there any pics or videos from previous meetings? It would be nice to see if any.
I am planning to come with a friend of mine. I will come with my 960 16vT of course.
On its own.

Check those links for pics of last year. Last year I bought a 4-lap ticket together with Fred for 70€, some food and drinks. So nothing to expensive, the trip over there was the most expensive. The dutch crew and myself got together the day before the trip and then the day itself.

Nice nice. It would be really great to meet so many volvo nuts in there.
Anyway, I am coming for sure if the progressive financial crisis don't mess up
the things really seriously.

When will the date be decided upon?
I checked through Via Michelin, and it seems it's a hair under 1500 km from Stockholm to Nurburg.
I'd also like to hear of the Swedes who did this run last year, what route did you guys go through? Via michelin suggest to drive from Stockholm to Jonköping and from there Malmö, continue over to Denmark and then a boat link from Denmark to Germany.
Another option for me might be a direct boat link from Helsinki to Germany, but that would be both slow and i'm pretty sure quite expensive.
What did everyone do/use for accommodation last year?
Any other tips or things about this trip are very welcome.
And also, when will the date be decided?

This spring I suppose. We already have an idea about which weeks are suitable now I guess. That makes it easier to plan the vacations.

I was the only Swede there.
I did not drive directly to Nürburg. I drove to JW240's place in Holland. Then we drove there later on.
And the route to take is through Denmark (over all three bridges), then the shortest route via the Autobahn. That is the route I have taken both times I went to Holland.
What did everyone do/use for accommodation last year?
See response above.
I really don't know where to stay around there either.

Thanks for the info Fred.
I guess it's going to be hotel then, it seems that the very city of Nürbug has many to choose from, and if that fails Bonn is only 70km from Nürburg, Köln not much further up. Those should be cities big enough to have hotel rooms available.
And i'm sure that the smaller cities near Nürburg have hotels as well. Too bad that Ich sprechen nicht deutch.
I really hope i can arrange it so that i could do this this year, sounds like a lot of fun, the nordschleife does.
But the sooner the date is set, the easier it will be to find a free room for reasonable amount of money.
Fred, did you drive to Holland in one day? How long did it take you?
I'm already planning on what would be the best way to drive there (germany), and i have no idea if i can even participate yet. :-D

I have visited JW240 several times. He is a good friend of mine.
It takes 14 hours to drive the 1300-ish kilometers to JW's place (including stops to eat and fill up with fuel etc.). It usually takes less time to get home (12 hours or so because the roads in Denmark and Sweden are pretty free at night).

When I drive down from Gothenburg I tend to take the Malmo to Copenhagen bridge and then drop straight down and take the Rodby to Puttgarden ferry. It's about 150km shorter than taking the bridge route. The ferry was only 20 Euros when I took it last time.

No, but it is frequent, I've never waited for more than about 15 minutes just turning up. It's a pretty short crossing, just enough time for a bite to eat and you're across. It's not a bad route as it also means you shirt the worst of the huge traffic jam that is Hamburg.
Actually 40 odd crossings a day, it takes 45 minutes.

Someone have date of the vrom this year?
Not yet I think.
I searched the official site for some dates (just examples, but I did look @ days with opening hours from 08:00 to 19:30)
- Sunday 19 july
- Saturday 25 july
- Sunday 26 july
- Saturday 15 august
there are a lot more ''touristenfahrten'', but from 11:00, or 14:30 to 19:30
Dunno what everybody wants, weekend or not.

well, i haven't heard any complaints about the date, so it could be fixed to that date.
We decided for a weekend because the track opens really early in the weekends (opposed to weekdays), so we can have a non-crowded track if we are early enough.
The plan?
A day before the ring, a dinner/bbq/hanging around, wrenching.
Nurburgring the next day.
Next days undecided... last year we did soms more wrenching and visited local sightseeing stuff etc.
I heard idea's of visiting a track in the Netherlands too (Zandvoort), Boris mentioned that.
open to suggestions!

drivetrain: too much too list, essentially finish +T and some left over stage 0 stuff, make downpipe, modify intercooler, install apc, install squirters, replace waterpump, replace exhaust studs, finish porting 90+, weld cracked 90+, make new IC piping, finish JAW, install M90, replace driveshaft center bearing. and more.. 95% of the parts are waiting patiently.

As I already told JW, this is what will happen for me:
I work until Friday afternoon (24th).
I will drive down to you guys on the morning of the 25th.
I will arrive around 20.00-21.00 at night. Maybe earlier if I can get to bed early on Friday.

Rob Prince (volvorules): Whatever rental he can get
Michael Towery (towerymt): Whatever rental Rob can get
Ian Bill (mrbill): Whatever rob's trunk is like
Jacob (Homer): JW's 240, cause well, it won't roll over like the 760
Greg Dolgner (liquidvice): Rental that I'll be in with Rob, Mike and others.......
None of those listed will be there. I don't think Homer is going to Europe and I know Ian flaked out with the lack of nurburgring in the plan for the rest of us from the states. Rob, Greg, and I are headed to Sweden/Denmark instead of Deutschland.

Thought about doing a real long day to be there for this, but to be honest the thought of driving the 940 round the track doesnt appeal enough for me to do the 1000mile round trip.

I guess day planning will be about the same as last year, meet up at the ring at about 10 in the morning, say hello to everyone and check out their rides, take the first set of laps, get something to eat, watch other rides (quite something to see, lets hope no-one gets allergic to GT3's ), get another sets of laps, talk about how we got around and by then the day will be almost over.
My 242 is almost ready, shocks will be in tomorrow, reassemble and take it for a spin, which will be the first decent one in almost 6 months.

most disturbing about the ring is lack of 3rd party cover , EU law makes the insurance company pay out , but if in the terms and conditions theres some exclusions the insurance company can come directly for you .
so if you just happen to collect a GT3 , put him in the armco , and in hospital , and its your fault , thats a 100k your probably looking at !!
Leon_pp
07-23-2009, 11:29 AM
Think that nordscheife is not a track, is a paying highway.
So your are on a road. There are 2 section where the speed is limited, and where the police love to put a radar.
You can NOT use slick tires because there are not street legal.

0600am is a bit early, it's only 2.5hr driving from JW's place and that's driving normal speeds. No need to get there 0800am when the track opens at 1000am
btw they introduced a new ticket system, it's based on a chipcard you can reuse/reload. It must also be used in the restaurant if you want to buy a drink. cash is no longer used. if you are not planning on revisiting the ring in the ame year, use all value on the card cause it is not tranferable to next year.
