Couldn't find info on the forum about it. Neat idea, but hideous none the less.

He told me I was free to take some pictures, and told me about the history of it... He built it himself back in 1974 from various Volvo's... There is a strong resemblance to the Volvo 262C coupe of 1978 to 1980, but the shop owner built this one four years before that...

that would be a 162 bertone, i've seen some 164 front end swaps on to 14x cars but actually that right there is far less hideous than it's factory produced counterpart, it might even be, dare i say, attractive.

the vinyl ones get like that, it cracks and water gets in + cheap steel bertone used = crunchy crunchy.

I believe there is one at the Volvo museum in Sweden. At least I've seen some photos of one they made back in the '70's.

that should be the icon of Volvo class and elgance next to the p1800, 780, and s90 executive. given a carbon fiber roof, of course.

i actually like that. it just needs better wheels. and i've always hated those tails but whatever.

No way that was built in '74, not to the way it looks now at least. Those tail lights were first used on the '75 164E's.

I reckon it's based on a '74 or '75 164, with a pre '73 164 grille and bumpers, and some 142 bits in there. The roof definitely looks custom, not a regular 262 roofline or quarter windows. Interior pics would be interesting to see.

Pimpin' outta your Vovo ain't easy. Needs Superfly headlamps, otherwise I like it.

Lose the vinyl and a bit of the chrome, and drop it an inch or two and that 162 would look really good.

I thought they started in '73 on both 140/164?

Edit: Nevermind, i guess the 73 140 tails were smaller

To me it looks like he started with a 262C body from 1978-79 (they had those tail lights in that year) then swapped on a 164 front end from maybe more than one 164 car, and then put the 164 bumper on the back.

Why go to all the trouble to cut & build a custom roof when you can bolt on a 164 front end to a 262C chassis with a (relatively) minimal amount of hassle?

That was a long time ago, I say the shop owner's memory is a little fried. Can you remember exactly what years you owned a particular car thirty years ago?

Although, the roofline IS a little weird.

the roof is definitely not a stock 262c roof. Same goes for the 1/4 panel glass. That is also higher than a stock 262c.

FWIW, when volvo was creating the 262c, they first started off with it with 160 front end. When it went into production the 2-- series was out so it had the 260 front end instead. Basically the prototype of the 262 was based on the 160 series. Look at the top right photo in this book....(Bjorn Eric Lindh "The cars from the 20s to the 80s")

i thought they started those lights on the 164 in '74. :e-shrug:

'74 164's still had the smaller four panel lights, the same as the '73-'74 140's, and the '75-'78 240's, the six panel lights with the chrome housings and the chrome strip were on the '75 164's, and the '75-'78 264's and 262's.

That car is in Calgary at a shop called Mr Volvo. I don't think it's for sale. It's been sitting in that spot for years. The owner of the shop is an absolute jackass so don't bother even trying to call him...
