I'm almost done restoring my 1800E. Want to get some new rims with my tax money.
Which should I pick.
1 Volans

2. Virgos
3. Satellites

None taken. If I had a few grand to spend I would get some Ferrari 288 GTO style rims. Compomotive makes some cool ones. I'm up for suggestions too. Trying to stay under a grand with tires and rims.

Its still possible, get adapters to run better/cheaper wheels.

I'm sure I could find adapters, but I'm trying to get away without them.

then try to find some msw or similar wheel. Newer wheels will look weird on an older car.

I think in order for a proper decision to be made one would have to know the finished ride height of the car.
How much wheelwell has to be filled, and how far off the ground will the rockers be?

Have you considered keeping the stock rims and modifying them? I have a '73 ES formerly owned by Ken Pruett (from IPD). He had the stock wheels widened.
Why not have the stockers widened, powder coated and polish the raised areas of each "spoke"?
Just a thought.

I feel like the stockers weigh a ton. It has crossed my mind though.

Non of those wheels suit the 1800, they are all too modern, go for something a little more suited to the age of car.

Just given the shape and trim of the car they should have some polished/chrome bits and not be too square. This eliminates most of the choices provided except those Eagles and I'm afraid they are too small.
Torque Thrusts like has been suggested are nice. My Dad had gold mesh Rikens with polished lips on his greenish-blue ES and that was pretty sweet.
Aren't the 1800s a Ford BP? If so, there are some awesome great wheels here:

I particularly like the Bullitt style (black or anthracite centers) and the FR500 in staggered arrangement if they'll fit.

exactly...will the car be lowered or sit at stock ride height?
If it's left stock, I would tend towards refinishing the wheels that are already on the car or go with Virgos.
I also like the Minilite/Panasport look as Stray suggested.

Isn't she cute! The dash was actually pretty easy to do. Its just a thin layer of wood glued over the original dash. Then was stained it and clear coated. I can't wait for it to be done either.
The red carpet is what came stock! It was a little dirty but cleaned up well. I love the red/black combo. I think Don T. at www.p1800.com can get all the carpet colors. Give him a call. Nice guy.

I wouldn't mind rolling arches as long as it doesn't mess up the paint. Took a picture with my iPhone of the front tire. Its flat but give you an idea of ride height.

I would choose the Virago, for two reasons:
1) It is distinctly a Volvo wheel.
2) The 1800 body is a chassic elegant shape. Wheels should highlight the car.not he car highlight the wheels.
If the wheels stand out to much, they diminishes the shape of the body.

#1
Because fwd OEM wheels bolt right up to 140's & 1800E's,and they are made in the same factory as BMW & Benz wheels.
#2
Most after market wheels are crap, and those that aren't are expensive.
#3
Volvo has some sweet wheel designs.

Well I went out and bought some Volans. Thanks for all the input, I don't think this is the last pair of rims I'll buy for the car. I decided on them because if I decide to try something different they will match up to my cross country pretty well.
It snowed a lot tonight, but I managed to get 2 of the rims on my car and take a photo. Light was bad but here it is. Only problem seems to be that the bearing grease caps interfere with the center caps. Looks like spacers might be next on the list.

Good call on the different center caps. I think I'll try to pull one out of the original rims and fit it up. I'll probably still need a bit of a spacer for it though.

Tape it up with duct tape so you don't scratch it.
Cut it 3/16"-1/4" behind the drainage hole with a 32tpi hacksaw blade.
Make a large dowell or carve a soft wood stick so it has a round end to set it with,so you don't dent the cap getting it past the wheel centric ring in the wheel.
Edit;
You can get dented caps on E-Bay pretty cheap to practice with.
