You need to look harder on Crutchfield ... I just found something which I'm pretty sure is what you need in terms of mounting.

For wiring, you'd use the Crutchfield adapter & splice in the wires from the back of the head unit. The head unit will have come with a wiring diagram, as will the adapter.

I recently mounted a kenwood reciever in my '82 242 in the lower position. Do you have the plastick "pocket" that factory radios fit in? I think it is the same width as the DIN style recievers. You'll need to make a bracket out of flat metal the shape of that plastic tray. Use the receiver's "cage" as a template and cut out a rectangle to fit the "cage" (bracket). The final product should look like a trapezoid with one hole in each corner (to mount with using sheet metal screws). I'd show you mine, but I don't have a digital camera. Very simple to make. The wiring wasn't that much harder either, just had to bypass the factory amp. If this helps and you need more info, let me know.

As far as I kow, the only kit crutchfield sells is for the upper position in later cars (where the gauges are in turbos).

No pocket, just a hole with wires dangling about.

Isn't this it?

When I selected "vehicle specific mounting kits", it asked whether I wanted something for the upper-dash mounting position or the lower-console mounting position; so it looks like it's the right thing?

Crutchfield rocks! That's exactly what mine looked like when I finished, but mine was probably not as good. Oh well, I didn't look hard enough, but I would have paid $15 for it.
