View Full Version : B230FT Into a 242

So I'm going to be pulling the B230FT out of my 740, rebuilding it, and installing it in the 242 (Pumpkin).

I know I need to go block mount dist since I will be using OEM Jetronic - what is the best way to achieve this? I'm guessing I need to get the accessory shaft out of a B230 from a 240 that includes the gear to drive the distributor? How does one remove the block off plate on the B230FT block? How do I mount the distributor in there?

Once that is taken care of, what do I do with the head? Can I just block off the backside where the dist was or will I need to get a different head?

Any other hurdles to overcome with this swap? I know I might need to elongate or shorten some parts of the wiring harness, but I am comfortable doing this.

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,
Phil

find dizzy from 240 running the same FI, simple, look in the on-line catalogs for what years

plate comes easy if you punch a hole in the middle and pry it out

dizzy just drops right in, you might have the accessory shaft already, some do, pull cap, look

consult manual for sure, but pretty sure, with motor at #1 tdc, install so that rotor is facing number 1 cylinder or there is a small notch on the rim of the dizzy. verify with a timing light once running

Once that is taken care of, what do I do with the head? Can I just block off the backside where the dist was or will I need to get a different head?

ipd for plug and plate, cheap

Thanks for the info! That is what I needed to know. I'm sure the block will have the accessory shaft, as it is used to run the oil pump as well, but I just can't remember if the 230FTs have a gear for the dist. If not, I presume a shaft out of a B230F would work fine with new seals.

Just use the intermediary shaft out of the motor that is in there now... that is what I did (exact same swap as what you are doing). They are all the same.

intermediary shaft

Thanks for the info - and I knew that I was using the wrong term but couldn't think of the correct one ;)

I'm doing this exact swap sometime in the next couple months. If you want to help out, it would make both our swaps easier! ;-)

Mine is going into a '75 245.

What year 242, and does it have a B21F/FT?

No worries, what year of 740 is the motor coming out of? In other words, what flavor of LH will you be using? My swap came from an '88 ( LH 2.2). Let me know if you want have any questions of how to lay stuff out. This is all fresh in my mind as I just got the motor buttoned up last night. Now I am just getting the interior all put back together.

1990, so 2.4, right?

Yes, I know 2.4 started in '89 for the 2's. I'm sure it was at least the same (if not earlier) for the 7's.

Will I need a dog dish flywheel or will the flat flywheel from the B230F/M46 donor do?

EDIT - it won't because the donor trans/flywheel is 2.2 and the B230FT is going to be 2.4.

I guess my question now would be whether or not to get a dogdish or flat flywheel for 2.4?

a few people here have modifed the flat flywheel to be used with the LH2.4

This is why I am glad I went with LH2.2.

I am definitely the first two :-D. I am not too worried about it, though. I just wanted to get it running... its just a used motor that I am probably going to wear out.

'89 for NA 740s, '90 for turbos.

Also, I don't recommend ditching a B21 for a pre-'93 B230. My vote is rebuild the B21. It's a much heavier-duty motor, and it won't get piston slap after 50,000 miles like 85-92 B230s will. Additionally, emissions-equipped B21Fs have factory 9:1 CR pistons, putting them right in the sweet spot for turbo applications.
