The inside liner on the 164 has been removed. It's in the trunk, but it's in pretty bad shape. Can I get away with making a fabric one or does it need to made from the same sort of vinyl that the original is made from? Any tricks that I ought to know in advance of replacing it such as gluing it in place, etc.?

Why not go the easy route? Grab a solid headliner from a 240, instead of that vinyl crap. I've got one in the 140 that fit almost perfect (minor glitch at the front but ya can't really tell).

Should be able to find a sunroof-model headliner easy enough...

BTW, if ya go that route, save yourself a LOT of hassle and just pull the back window. Trust me.

I don"t need to replace the entire headliner, just the bit that goes on the sunroof.

Gotcha.

Don't mind me then.... ;-)

The easiest thing to do is just take the old sunroof headliner to an upholstery shop and ask them to re-upholster it with a new skin on the same frame. It shouldn't cost too much, since it's just that one little square of fabric. The fabric needs to be something that will slide in the sunroof grooves without binding. If you're doing it yourself, you can probably find the fabric at an upholstery shop, and maybe get a few tips on how to re-attach it...
