Just loaded White-Rice up for the trip to J2 tomorrow, where we will build the M90 on the B230ET.
Got all the goodies and some more stuff in there in case we finish early and get bored..
I'll try and get some pics of the build, I just hope I’ll make it there with the broken M46 wish me luck!

Good luck ouwe. Don't think you are going to have some spare time for the other stuff. But hey, you are optimistic, and that's... good.
oooh, i get it, you want to have WR finished before the Elandrun.

Just remember there is a master spline on that propshaft when you fit it onto your rear half. It goes in so far and then locks if you get it wrong. Don't force it!

on our 760 we had a drive axle that didn't want to work in any direction. very strange. we discovered some wide/flat spots and removed them, and it finally worked (assembled in original marked position). sometimes they just don't want to cooperate.

It is supposed to be easy as pie..
Haven't done it myself but together with J2 you'll manage.
Good luck getting there :)
woeiiiiiii
I think we will get it done, there's two other M90 cars (one of them is my M90 equipped '85 740) in my shop atm so we can always take a peak :)
Thanks for the tip fivehundred, I always got complete driveshafts, so we will take a look at it.
Anyone in the netherlands that is bored tomorrow is welcome :) shop is in Woudenberg near amersfoort.

There are too different partnr's for M90 oil
So there you have it we put swapped the M90 in the car within a day at ease .. the ride is SOOOOO much better now!
Sure the M46 was broken but still the difference is so noticeable and a real 5th gear is also very nice.
Mind you that the move to the 5th gear and also the 3th gear are different so take it easy when you just did the swap .. for the first time in my life i even was careful!

Woeh!!:)
We had some fun, and got it done :ninja: that rimes :-P
too all the bencracers out there, if Mr. Borrie and I can do it, it's sure as hell not that hard :rofl:
//Mythbustermode
You can use the M46 hydraulics WITHOUT problems
You can't re-use the m46 crossmember in any sort of way
There are different partnumbers, for different years of m90-oil
There is only one way 2 pieces of driveshaft will fit together, we tested EVERY other option.

There you have it. Maybe the early 700's have the mount WhiteRice has, but my 740 has the same one as a M90 car!

(yeh i know it's about the m90. but don't have a thing to say about that)
BUT I SAY PICS OR BAN
@Turbosteen;
What I'm trying to say; If you do a +M90 swap GET THE CROSSMEMBER WITH it.
Theoretically (hope I spelled that right) you are right.

I know, It's very important to have it, otherwise you'll never get it done..
But maybe it's strange that I have the right one allready?

that's quite an improvement! :-P You got a promotion?
I had my M46 and M90 crossmember side by side when I did the swap on my 945 (1993) and they were identical. As were the clutch arms.

No they got fed up with me :lol:, and the other place opened up so.. 1+1
@BB-Q; This thread is about a swap in a 700 series, although they share alot of things not everything so it seems. :)

left is M46, right is M90. i think earlier cars (till maybe '88/89'/90'?, depending on engine) had the old style x-member. later volvo changed to the newer style mount (the one on the right).
Why did they change? the old style engine mounts were all puck-shaped and angled towards each other, so all sideways (cornering) and longitudinal (braking/accelerating) were taken care of without extreme shear in the mounts. Later they changed to the hydraulic cushion engine mounts (we are talking grandpa series here), and those can't cope that well with the shear force, they were placed horizontal as well, not angled. transmission mount had to take care of more of the forces in sideways (cornering) and longitudinal (braking/accelerating) direction.
The bracket on the right was used on autotragics too. The rubber support is actually a early 760 prv engine mount.

Just to add that the ZF equipped 940 have the same rubber mount and crossmember as the M90.
You need the casting that goes from the mount to the gearbox as well though.
