I've come to a cross roads with the 940. It's done a lot of hard miles and its starting to show. It hit 200K miles the other day, and compared to a fresher example it feels like an old slipper. The engine has major bore wear and sounds like a bag of nails when it first starts. The gearbox has 500K miles on it, I don't like the new diesel clutch.

It needs paint as it has a dent in the RH rear wing from being hiot last year, both bumpers need re painting, the bonnet and front wings need painting as it got assaulted by a Golf. the Golf lost but i repaired it temporarily using scrapyard panels. Having said all that it is very well maintained, and I wouldn't hesitate to go on a 4000 mile trip in it confident in the knowledge that all it will need is a top up of oil.

I won't sell it, the parts are worth more than the car, so if I get something else it'll get scrapped.

I also have a 240, 1993 estate, essentially rust free, low miles. I could stuff a turbo engine and M90 into it. Beyond that i could graft a 164 front end onto it. don't even mention the words "flat hood". It isn't going to happen, I don't like the look. Reminds me of cloth interior B21A engined cars driven by 70 year old old geezers.

if you chose to kill the 940 please for the love of god save the headlights infact how much would you ask for a set of headlights and the eggcrate grill?

Why do you want them? You don't have a 940.

That said, seriously if you do scrap it then I would be most interested in the headlights and grille.

I don't have any grilles, but I have several sets of headlights. However they dip the wrong way for American traffic, the UK driving on the left.

Drive this as is and tinker with something else.

up to you. personally, i'd try to figure cost between b230ft+240 and 240/740/940+straight-six or five.

Anyone catch how he dissed the flathoods? Strange to me, I wonder if he thinks Rob Prince's car looks like a grandpa mobile.

a race-car is a race-car. volvo or not. the only difference is the fan-base.

how about a v90 or the like. They make very nice daily drives from all accounts.

I still have the V90, but the project is on hold at the moment. It needs too great an infusion of cash to get it to where I want it. Hence I'm messing with live axle cars at the moment. I may well make the V90 the V70R bumpers in the next couple of months and seam weld the engine bay.

I may well just fix the foibles on the 240 and send it looking for a new owner. Its a very nice car, probably too nice really to arbitrarily mess with.

For crying out loud build a b230ft 240, apparently its "not viable" in RHD due to the steering coulmn getting hot and the brakes getting hot.

Maybe another kicking around would be more convincing than just the one.

You are pretty tall. I'm 1.88m and driving a 240 isn't comfortable because of the space issues your legs will have at least I had a bit of a problem fitting in a 240.
Chairs are better in a 700/900, just as the sound insulation etc
These are problems which can be fixed but well, you'd have to fix them....

I know you drive a lot. imho a 700/900 is a better DD compared to a 240.
I'd buy something similar to what you have know as a DD.
So buy a fresher 940 or fix the current DD. I thought it looked rather nice!
Maybe a fresh engine and some maintenance will fix your problems.

The 940 is well maintained, nothing really wrong with it in terms of reliability. Everything works and it will do anything I ask of it. It's a very good car. The engine has bore wear, probably linked to 200K miles and running on gas. But it runs well enough.

Only trouble is the body is getting scruffy. It killed a VW Golf a few years back driven by an uninsured unlicenced driver and it had its rear wing hit last year on an icy road. The harsh reality is that if I sort the paintwork out properly I can buy a low mileage car for less money.

However the car has sequential gas injection, Alpine touch screen sat nav with CD autochanger, stainless steel exhaust, sports cat, bilsteins and a load of other goodies. If I get another car the only sensible option is to part it out. I can't replace the parts for anything approaching the current market value of the car.

I've decided to sort out the 240 well over the next few weeks and sell it as a standard perfect 240. It needs very little to make it just so. I'll run the 940 as I have muy hands full with other projects. Of course I may change my mind tomorrow:oops:

240 is nice imho, but for a long distance DD a late 940 would be better. Interior space and sound level especially, but also the suspension of the 940 seems to be more comfortable.

240+164 front end, nah, not my cup of tea, especialy on a late 240.

240+turbo+M90 etc would be nice yeah. one day i'll build it (planned to do the swap this summer).

Nah I went one better than you when I got bored of the 940 and wanted a bigger toy, 2.9 litres of turbocharged intercooled diesel, wrapped in a Mercedes Sprinter body.:oogle:

Or you could try to find a lower mile 940 4 door shell and respray it then use that,
Wait a minute I have one in Blue and it is even at your workshop just needs a turbo engine and a M90
Or put a newer back axle with new shocks and bushes in your 940.
