I'm organizing an overnight trip cruising around Oregon this summer. The tentative plan is as follows:
Friday 8/14 late afternoon:
I'll fire up the grill at my place and provide some meat products to cook. Bring your own drinks and other favorite cookout items. If there is interest, I live close to Portland International Raceway so later in the evening there is always the option of Late Night Drags.
Saturday & Sunday 8/15-8/16:
We will be driving from Portland through the Coast Range to Astoria, then down 101 with some scenic detours, camping somewhere close to the beach. Sunday continuing South through Tillamook, taking a scenic detour through Pacific City, and the back east towards Salem and going home from there.
I will contact several campgrounds and post up reservation information once I pick one. Obviously you will have to make your own reservations but I'll share all the contact info, prices, etc.

What's your opinion on a route: Coast or Cascades?

Don't have an opinion yet, haven't had a chance to read your post or look into anything. I just saw a date had been decided and I'm IN! I'll eventually have some time to look into things. Right now, it's sleep, get the 760Ti registered, work on the car, sleep, driiiiiiiiiiiiiive.

I tried calling the 800 #, can't get a live body. If reservations get full we can cram extra tents into camp sites. I just reserved mine, but I snore loudly so be warned if you plan on sleeping near me.
$28 including a $6 online reservation fee.

Here's what I have in mind as far as a plan. Friday night BBQ @ my house. Saturday morning meet up in North Plains right off Highway 26 in the Chevron parking lot @ 9:00. By 9:30 we head west. I'll have to contact Michael about meeting up with him and having any shindig in Astoria. There are several stops along the way that we can make. Photo op @ Astoria Column perhaps? Hit the beach in the afternoon for kite flying and whatever else floats your boat. There is a Safeway in Astoria that we can stop at if we want to do dinner cooking @ the campground, probably cheaper than dining out. I'll probably borrow a campstove, if anybody else has one, bring it. Sunday morning head out pretty early down 101 south. The drive that I mapped out will take most of the day when you factor in stops along the way.

hmmm, 850?What she said.
I told Kyle i wanted a fwd or awd volvo on the side, and he said I'm ****ing retarded. :)I didn't say it in those words, but something along the same lines, yeah. If you can't afford to fix and modify your current car, an 850 is just going to be another level up of the same thing. Even more so though, your reasoning for wanting one is to go to the mountains as you think your car isn't capable... When yours is almost just as capable as an 850, but like one, it'll need better tires. Then regarding AWD, there isn't one out there that is cheap to maintain, especially with the miles you rack up. They're all pieces of crap until you get to the newer('03+) ones, and even then... Plus, they're not so easy to work on compared to your 1991.
My R is "Pull Me Over Red" as I like to say. But my 240 has R12 so it is a toss up...but damn those 850s are comfy. Still Are we allowed to come to the bbq if we cant make the trip or what?Of course! I don't know if I'll even make the BBQ, but I am going on the trip.
SPEAKING OF THE TRIP:

I am going to Cali this weekend... I am an idiot. Tom will have to represent me at the BBQ. Man if my plans weren't solid I would break them, but I already broke them once and the family will get too mad this time.
Can't you all change your BBQ plans for next weekend darn it. Maybe I should do a BBQ myself so I can feel included.

Can't commit to Friday on this one... we get out of work pretty late in Salem... can't even get home until around 6pm.

There may be a change in plans Saturday night. Due to the death of a friend our Saturday night host will not be in town. I have looked at other campgrounds including KOA but everything seems full Saturday night. I will post up with more details tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with Ft. Stevens State Park. Here's what they told me.
1. They are currently booked for Saturday night. If we show up around noon we can get any spots that might become available due to last minute cancellations.
2. If nothing is available they can assist us in finding camping at one of the 13 private campgrounds in the area.
3. Camping on the beach is technically illegal.
4. We can park our cars in the overflow parking lot and all camp in the one spot that I have reserved. There is at least a 40' paved area as well as grass. I don't think that turnout for the cruise will be too large to fit. They don't have a limit as to how many tents we can set up on the reserved site. If you have an air mattress, bring it.
I think that camping together is the best option. As long as we behave ourselves there shouldn't be any issues. I feel strange about crashing at Mike's place when he isn't there, especially considering the circumstances of his absence. Thoughts on the subject?

Bump before the fun starts. Remember kiddos, you're welcome to the BBQ even if you aren't going on the campout. I'll have dead animal products for your consumption, my wife has promised either the world's best chocolate chip cookies or a platter of brownies, so bring your favorite food/drink item to share and stop by! Sounds as though several people are going to the late night drags Friday evening, my house is about 3 miles from PIR.
