I just found this fourm... took me long enough!
I just bought meself a new car today for $100.00 This 1987 760 wagon burns more oil than it does gas. I'm hoping all it needs is piston rings and head gasket, but the real reason I got it was that I think the rear-facing kiddie seats are hoTT
So I'll be working on that this summer, hopefully gonna completely re-do it... inside and out, find a dohc head and get one of those 5spd's (forgot the number) off a friend.
More info (and pics) when I get it home and dismantled.

Meanwhile, my 87 740 Ti is goin on 300K... does anyone know where those cheesy little badges I see on some peoples grille's come from? I need 3 of 'em... or 5, now I have 2 volvos.

also... any other volvo fans in the mid-atlantic?

i had a similar problem. when i got my 87 760t it had BAD scoring on the #4 cylinder wall. i was losing 40# of compression in that cylinder, so i yanked the block and rebuilt it from the bottom up. at most you'll need to bore it and replace pistons & rings. at least it would be just rings. (the scoring on the #4 cyl was due to carbon deposits building up between the ring and the piston thus causing the edge [where the rings come together] to carve a nice groove in my cylinder wall)

needless to say i had great blowby and the oil went black in a week... but now its fresh!

oh yeah, check for up and down scoring on the pistons... this is a signature of engine overheating

thanks for the advice, I can't wait to get this beast apart. Hopefully it won't have too much scoring, but I suppose if it does it's not the end of the world. When I pulled out the dipstick at the gas station during test drive I couldn't tell what color the oil is, because it didn't register. So + 3 qts to limp home. I'm thinking about picking it up with the trailer.

eh i've driven 20 miles with no oil before..

instead of rebuilding, do what i and others have done and put a low miles non turbo engine in there with the stock T3 on it..
