View Full Version : Has anyone installed the Bosch 040 fuel pump in their 240?

I am looking at installing the Bosch 040 (first in the link http://boschfuelpumps.com/ )and bypassing the main pump.
I have read many different flow rates and such, some in my favour and some which make me concerned about using this as the only pump in the system.
Here is some info gathered (I know limited research presented here but is representative of my research) :

Does anyone have experience with the installation, ie what modifications/fittings are needed, also how the pump has performed for your specific application. Really both would be preferable.
If this is in the wrong forum mods please move the thread to most appropriate one
Thanks

With the stock 240 tank and pickup, you will get best performance with a fairly gentle (low pressure high volume) lift pump and good quality main pump.
For that matter, I think high power in-tank pumps are silly. Why suffer and go to all that trouble to put something in the tank that you want to be able to wire/plumb up, listen to, (ideally bench) test and replace easily?

What about a high pressure inline pump and do away with the intank?

Thats what a 75-76 240 is. Different tank. Hard to find one of those in good enough shape to bother using, but that is what John Lane's rally car has more or less...dual k-jet benz high pressure pumps with early 240 tank.
Later tank needs a lift pump.

How long does it take you to get the sending unit out? Takes me about a minute or two...

I am likely giving J a hand with this- I am interested to see how it works out.
I don't trust my walbro, it makes wierd noise and gurgles and complains.
If htis pump means bosch quality/reliability and the simplicity of a single pump, then that's just all kinds of awesome, and they're pretty cheap.
I believe they are rated for 300lph, and they quote a working pressure of 94psi which is insane.
Walbros basically just make noise past 80psi.
I am stoked to see how it works out.

Not long. Just don't care to do it at all ever.

In reality though if something that works reliably can be found- with a new pump you should never have to go rooting around in the fuel tank anyways so it'sd kinda moot... No reason the bosch for example shouldn't live 100,000miles...

Whats the verdict on this?

then get a sumped tank and pull from the bottom you nancy boy :-P
Why have the risk of two fuel pumps when one will be more than enough? I haven't had to look at the fuel tank end of my 740 since 2004 when I replaced the original pump with a walbro.
Of course, one would also ask, why bother with the 040 when the 044 is mo bettah and barely mo moneh.

The 040 is an in-tank so you are just running a single pump. The 044 has been converted to in-tank use by some people, but it's physically larger- it'd be a really tight squeeze into the tank on a 240 at least. Otherwise with an 044 you still need an in-tank of some sort.
One thing to consider is 2 pumps is probably the way to go if you are doing the Bosch gen 4 injectors and high base pressure- Walbros on their own tend to not do much past 70-80psi.
I am thinking of feeding an 044 with a Walbro which is apparently the hot ticket for high base fuel pressure setups.
Regardless of all that though i am still thinking of sumping my tank personally, because under 1/2 tank of gas and I can't beat the car in 1st or 2nd without it cutting out - apparently it sloshes the fuel away from the pickup. Annoying.
Also, i think they sent Ermit the wrong pump, and it was damaged to boot so who knows what will happen now. Sucks.

well, I'll be taking my own advice, sort of, and putting a sumped tank in and a pair of 044's, no feeder (except gravity)

Probably makes the most sense in your case, and seems to be the most common setup with then hondabois. Arguably overkill for someone shooting for 300ish whp though. :)

no doubt, which is why I wasn't recommending that specific setup here ;-)
A single walbro in tank, done. Hell the oem turbo fuel system is fine for that.

I put the 240 turbo kjet pump on my originally LH based 240. Its the same dimensions and plumbing configuration as teh bosch 044

A quick question, maybe someone will know.
What kind of filter does the intank 040 pump use on the suction side? Something similar to standard tranfer pumps that are in-tank as stock?

Well as of now I have still not received the 040 pump, which is quite similar in size to the external pumps.
The 023 I received has a metal screen which is held in place by a a fold in the metal at the base of the housing. Unfortunately the screen in mine has been pressed in and torn from the edges.
So back the drawing board.
I was thinking of the 044 but am unsure if the pre-pump would be sufficient. Those more knowledgeable in the realm of fuel delivery have any thoughts?

uhm, my brother bought a 044 pump from boschfuelpumps.com and he didnt receive anything. bad communication too. just file a complaint, no matter what they say about delivery in xx weeks. no money back, no pump.
